Very impressive ! The Genesis sound chips were better than people realize.

It's a common knowledge, that Genesis Yamaha YM2612 is an excellent sound chip for its time. But a good software to work with was almost nonexistent at that time and everyone had to learn how use it from the ground up or use GEMS software to help composers, which wasn't good enough by any means. Japanese developers had their own software and usually did excellent job making YM2612 music.

@@dm1i it seems Yuzo wrote his own driver for this chip back then.
@azazelleblack2 жыл бұрын
Most of the best composers did-Jesper Kyd famously wrote a "tracker" for the chip, while Chris Huelsbeck wrote the whole sound driver backend for Mega Turrican IIRC. Others I don't know about but which had unique sounds (and thus probably did) include Motoi Sakuraba, Matt Furniss, Kazuo Hanzawa, Toshiharu Yamanishi, Hitoshi Sakamoto... probably others I've forgotten. The list of MD/Genesis titles that had amazing music is probably shorter than the list of MD/Gen titles that had terrible music, but it's a longer list than people realize for sure.

Also worth mentioning that Howard Drossin used GEMS and produced some pretty great results for Sonic Spinball, Comix Zone, and The Ooze. GEMS certainly wasn't ideal, but like any tool, you could make it work.

@@azazelleblack Yeah, in an industry without standards, it's expected, still amazing, though. Apart of that, this guy can make this Yamaha chip sound like CD quality, I believe some channels would take the cut in actual games with sfx, but still.

Everyone amazed at the superb synth work on this track, but nobody's mentioning how PSG 1 and 2 are carrying the entire song though.

Savaged Regime is one of the few modern composers I've seen make *exceptional* use of the PSG to bolster the channel count in a way that sounds natural.

If only there were other people that good as Savage Regime back in the 90s then the Genesis would have dominated the SNES nobody would enter the hype train regarding that SNES Soundchip.
@jacklawsen63902 жыл бұрын
That's not really how it works, though. People have figured out how to use the SNES sound chip better over time too. Besides, why does one old game system need to "dominate" another, why not just appreciate both?
@Mails0132 жыл бұрын
@@jacklawsen6390 I appreciate both. I am saying that only a few knew how to use the Genesis Soundchip at it's best.
@jacklawsen63902 жыл бұрын
@@Mails013 I can definitely agree with that. From what I've heard, making it sound its best is fairly complex, whereas the SNES chip seems like it was easier to use, and therefore devs could make a decent-sounding game with less effort.
@azazelleblack2 жыл бұрын
Definitely depends on your definition of "decent-sounding," though. I don't really like anything on the SNES. It's MIDI, through and through, and the SNES just didn't have the sample bank to produce good-sounding music. Even the songs people hold up as exemplars for the platform just sound tinny and warbly to me. Some later composers have done good things with the hardware in a vacuum, but I've never heard an SNES game with music that made me think "yes, this sounds good."
@jacklawsen63902 жыл бұрын
@@azazelleblack Well, SNES music did tend to sound fairly soft, but a lot of soundtracks for it are widely liked. I understand not caring for the sound of a given system, though. A lot of people love C64 music, but despite appreciating its complexity, I find most of it harsh, grungy, and unpleasant.

Yup. The youtube video is a /little/ higher quality than how it would actually sound on a genesis, but if you sub to SR's patreon for $1 you can download the .vgm files for each of his songs and play it through something like rymcast.
