C-Dory 25' Supercruiser Sea Trials with Autopilot...

Taking out Ocean Avenue, a 25' - 2005 C-Dory SuperCruiser for some autopilot/sportpilot sea trials on video the summer of '14 out of John's Pass, Madeira Beach, Fl in the Gulf of Mexico. Most of the trials were in the 12/15 kph range with calm seas. Via KZbin Capture

Due to its flat bottom in the rear half of the hull, it's a little tough in a tight chop as it does pound. A deep vee will cut through the waves like a knife, the flat hull will slap the water. The trade off is fuel efficiency as flatter = more efficient , deeper vee needs more power to plane.

Reminds me of my old Arima, same sort of trade-offs; of the years I had her, the ONLY time I saw the downside was in very tough winds, the Pilot House literally was stopping me from gaining ANY forward movement. But when I spun her around, 180 degrees, that same Pilot House filled with air and blew me back to harbor in some kind of record time. But here is here is what was important, even in that condition and large waves, we were never threatened, safe, warm, dry--going nowhere, sure, but in those extreme conditions, that really wasn't very important to us, or to anyone with a brain.

With that Honda 150 what was your best cruise speed and also top speed please? Nice setup! Thanks for sharing.

Top speed was about 32 Mph, low speed cruise was about 6 mph and on plane about 12/15 mph.

what autopilot did you use?

It was a Raymarine “SportPilot” where the motor drive system is installed on the steering pump input shaft behing the steering wheel. It was a pretty effective system and easy to use/set.

A Raymarine “SportPilot+” mounted on the steering pump input shaft after removing the wheel and then reinstall wheel to the autopilot motor.
