C-Fly Obtain F803 Brushless FPV Folding 1080p FHD Camera Drone Flight Test Review

This folding GPS quadcopter is reminiscent of the Mavic Pro with folding brushless motors and 3 axis stabilized gimbal and camera. Find it here goo.gl/STbR85
Pros
- Folding design brushless motor quadcopter, very reminiscent of Mavic Pro.
- Controller includes a built-in 5.8Ghz WiFi repeater amplifier. This frequency will not create interference with the 2.4Ghz controller. Also the WiFi repeater/amplifier enables distant digital data FPV reception on your 5.8Ghz capable phone or tablet.
- Flight modes of altitude hold, GPS position hold, GPS circle position, selfie mode (back is front and front is back), and return to home. Follow me and waypoint modes are also available via its app only.
- Return to home and landing on manual selection, and automatic return and landing on loss of signal and low voltage.
- Fast flier.
- 1080p HD camera with 2K digital still capability.
- Smart DVR. Knows to stop recording and finalize the video file if you accidentally turn off the quadcopter without first stopping the video recording. Wish every camera quadcopter had that feature.
- 3 axis brushless stabilized gimbal with remote up/down tilt capability.
- 3S 3800mah battery produces flight time of up to 20 minutes (I flew over 15 minutes and still had 20 percent remaining battery power).
Cons: Keep in mind that this is the original release. As such, there are some bugs to be ironed out.
- Requires 5.8Ghz WiFi (802.11 ac) capable smartphone or tablet. Phones/tablets with older 2.4Ghz WiFi will not work with this drone.
- Instruction manual very small and incomplete. I actually had to use a magnifying glass to read. Operation of the quadcopter not fully discussed (example, connection procdures of phone to controller).
- Seems to use GPS only (no GLONASS).
- Did an automatic return to home at about 200 meters distance.
- On/Off power button sticks.
- Gimbal shudders in turns creating shaky video. Gimbal up/down control is also too sensitive. It's easy to overshoot up or down.
- Date/time stamp on video. No instruction on how to turn it off.
- Pins of microSD card reader do not make proper contact with card due to current design. Requires adding a cushion material above the card to push the card down into the reader pins.
- I had difficulty in calibrating the compass. It required many repeated tries until I had a successful calibration.
- On screen telemetry information of range, height, and distance is very difficult to see with current tiny font of app.
- App is buggy. Crashed on me several times. Google Maps feature also is not implemented yet (I could not get it to work).
- Automatic takeoff button on controller would not work.
- Original list price was somewhat high for its current performance and features (was originally posted at $499. Price has since been reduced. Maybe once most of the above cons are corrected, then its original price would be justified.

They’re getting as close as they can to the Mavic look, it’ll be interesting to see if they do updates on it regularly. Can you do a follow up review after a few up dates? The gimbal set up, it looks as if they are intending it to be generic to fit more than one kind of drone so it’ll be interesting to keep an eye on CFly.

at about half the price of the DJI Mavic I don't see why people are complaining, looks like a great drone.... just ordered a 8807 as my first drone and as a person who just really wants to take aerial video/pictures favoring portability my upgrade path would be between this and diy; unless I win the lottery or similar, maybe I'd just get a heli:P

Great, great, great review. I really have learned something here, since you're right about the tiny manual ;) Thanks for the link to the tutorial video by C-Fly showing "hidden" features of the transmitter not mentionend in any manual so far. One thing about the microSD card slot: Take a closer look at the metal lid that seems to close onto the card. I figured that out myself after I was mad at the stupid slot: You need to put the metal lid down and move it towards the outside edge of the gimbal to actually fix it. That way the card has a proper connection :)

Unfortunately my metal lid fell off when I tried that. I now just insert a small piece of foam under the lid to hold the card in place.

When this was posted, the price point was higher for it and the Mavic Pro, now the Price on this toy grade quad is lower, but with the release of the Mavic Pro 2 you can get a Manufacturer Referb Mavic Pro for about $500 ( watching one now with 2 batteries for $525!). Still feeling much love for my Open Solo with the Solex app ( does everything but wash your car lol). Great flight test review though! Thank you for that!. as for this C-Fly Obtain.. I think I'll take a big pass. :)

Obtain 803. Hello: I have two phones with dual band wifi (5ghz). In the two phones it appears in the wifi list: Drone; Control and Settings. I can fly the drone only with the phone for follow-my or track function and everything goes perfectly. But, only with the initial configuration of the phone. As soon as I insert a phone provider SIM, Dron, Control or Settings do not appear in the Wi-Fi list and it is already impossible to pair or contact the phone with the drone or with the controller. This happens to me in both phones and with different sims, so it would seem that it is a fairly common failure. PLEASE, what can I do to solve the problem? Thank you.

Nice review! The C-Fly looks a bit flaky to me. The LHS prop is often in shot and there seems to be a lot of jello too. The quality of the 1080p footage is not as detailed as I would have expected either. Hopefully, they will be using this as a development model because it's close but no cigar. I can't see this version selling for much over $150 as it is.

This drone could of been so much better if they had just made the build quality a little better, sorting out the camera movements, better sim tray, better controller build. if your going to spend around 400 for this might as well save the extra 200 or so and get a Spark. nice review tho best I've seen of this drone.

It's a lot easier to calibrate when you just turn your whole body I learned that the hard way when my drones weren't calibrating right standing still turning it in my hand. And this drone would dominate with that 3 axis gimble if it was around the price of 150, 189, 199. But it's 2019 and this thing on Amazon and ebay is 405usd and I seen a lot of other listings at 600 and 699. That's absolutely ridiculous. You could get the Anafi 500-700, or bebop 2 power 450-500 or the spark 350-489, or the Mavic air that's what's 800? This thing is in the wrong price point. If it was 189 I think it would dominate the cheaper market and what it's actually worth.

This quadcopter looks good considering the price. I really don't understand why Obtain has cloned the Mavic, instead of creating its own one. I really don't know if "carbon-copying" another successful drone is a good marketing strategy. The Mavic (for sure) is a better product, in terms of quality, it also has better performances (as far as I know) and probably a better customer service... that's why it costs 3 times more. P.S. After this free ad for the Mavic, I would appreciate if DJI send me a spare one :-)

I don't think it was the firmware. It's likely the lighting that Andy was filming under. It was a dark overcast (and rainy) day for Andy's flight.

Quadcopter 101 video quality was better than AndyRC's or Soul Force Quad's. His frame rate was much better than theirs. But I think both of them made the mistake that Quadcopter 101 pointed out, they bound their phones to the quad and not the TX. AndyRC discovered and fixed it at the end. But the video both of them posted may of been what was recored to the phone and not what was recorded to the memory card.

nope i connected to the controller and when u do that on the iphone the telem doesnt work thats not what i discovered at the end....i discovered the only way to get telem working was to connect to the copter. my professional opinion is avoid this until they atleast fix the video

Have you tried inserting the sd card into the metal holder, pushing it down and sliding the metal part inwards / outwards? Looks exactly like the sd / sim card holders I have in my phone and they only lock in when you slide them back.

My friend has a Spark. It is pretty awesome, though I kinda wish the controller had an embedded LCD for the FPV camera like the Hubsan H501S and Yuneec Q500. The only things to keep in mind with the Spark are that the battery firmware will need to be updated before you can fly (seriously) and it does not have any sensors/obstacle avoidance to prevent it from flying straight up into a tree in RTH mode.

On the end of the video after you have inserted the sd card and you close that door you have to push that little door forward. so it will lock the sd card into place, a have the same in my cell phone, 1. Inserd the sd card. 2. close that door downwards. 3. clic the sd card holder (little door) forward.

Boy they sure are trying to Duplicate a Mavic. Save your money folks for the real deal. Also, app controller junk. You are going to have to purchase the C-Fly with the controller which now puts you at $459.. If you are on a budget, just purchase a Hubsan H501S and learn to fly first..

Almost same price point that Spark. But really bad/useless video quality, really bad/useles gimbal stabilization, bad stability overal, big props and props shadow problems, bad build quality, no features that Sparks has, no any censors, much bigger and bulkier than Spark etc. etc. I don't see the reason why somebody will choose this over Spark. Overprized! I will buy this for fun FPV use if it costs about $100-200.

Jussi Valter not the same price....the spark is basically a selfie drone without the $100 remote. If you want just the drone and remote it's $500 and if you want the fly more bundle it's about $600
