Yep it's wonderful way to explain where he'd got the idea from, sure you could have just assumed he had a book about creatures and chose to best one's for the job, but with this tie to his childhood it fits really well with him having frumpkin around. Those not only being reminders of a better past but also motivation to finish his mission and be able to return to a similar state again.

On the one hand, this is absolutely hilarious.
