Makes me think of Donald Trump. If you watch some of the videos from the 2011 dinner, he gets ripped to shreds by the President and Seth Meyers. You can't see his face too clearly, but what you can see suggests that he is pissed. Which makes it that much funnier. :D

I think a lot of commenters are really underestimating the level of seemingly life and death political tension and general uncertainty post 9/11. As a liberal you could ostracize yourself by not being openly patriotic. The word "patriot" was used more than "snowflake" is now. Even MSNBC fired 3 different hosts because they didn't support the Iraq war. In context and in content, Colbert exceeded edginess. It wasn't a clever roast like this, or like Gervais at the Emmys (who I love), it was shocking, true satire, and people still ask him about it on a regular basis. With Obama, it was totally different political climate, and thank god for that. If Trump would actually show up to one there might be another shot at being truly subversive.

@@newwavenancy America in the post-9/11 cultural dark ages was a definite "You had to be there" time in history to understand. It's like the 90s were an extended period of collective joy-teals and magentas and Michael Jordan-and everything just went wrong somehow. Nobody smiled. Nobody laughed. The most sadistic piece of torture porn ever committed to network television was the number 1 show on television and Kiefer Sutherland was a secular Jesus among Republicans for playing Jack Bauer. If people think America's moving toward authoritarianism _now_, if they think "cancel culture" is out of control...it's got nothing on a time when performative patriotism was demanded lest one be branded an outright terrorist. For Colbert to shatter that entire cultural illusion in one brilliant display of subversion and speaking truth to power...I don't frankly know how he was able to walk off the stage with such enormous brass balls.

I thought he did a wonderful job, and to me his timing was spot on. It was a little fast, but I guess I just relate to people who speak that way. The first few jokes had me in stitches. Great job either way though.

brilliant. has he ever done standup? I know he's MC'd roasts and done some bits here or there, but Jimmy really is a naturally funny guy, he doesn't even have to try. Mad props for him on this, this was tough but fair, you know he wanted to go rated R but settled for PG-13. YOU DA MAN JIMMY!

There was a lot of truth in this speech. He should have gotten more laughs but it hit too close to home. Thanks Jimmy, for saying what a lot of us were thinking.
