C. Thi Nguyen - Echo Chambers and Epistemic Bubbles

In this 2020 paper from the journal Episteme, Thi Nguyen makes a useful distinction between epistemic bubbles (in which certain kinds of information are inaccessible through omission) and echo chambers (in which certain kinds of information are actively excluded through undermining trust of the outside world). Thi Nguyen goes on to argue that echo chambers can help us understand post-truth phenomena, and tells us that escaping echo chambers begins through the building of trust.

In argentina we use the expresion "cabeza de termo" wich could be translated to thermo bottle head, to refer to those who opinions are clearly locked in what I believe are the definition of echo chambers.

In so far as this is a social issue , why are we not looking for a social solution? To me the real meat of the topic seems to be not about how we get individuals out of their echo chamber but in adressing the social basis which gives rise to the prevalence of echo chambers in the first place.

because, one may assume, the oligarchs want it that way ... also that tech defines us and evolves faster than we possibly know what to do with it ... and every time we reach to regulate it morphs anyways, not to mention we have no international agreement/solidarity, etc etc

@@clumsydad7158 i think roughly Greco argues for a trustworthy epistemic group that preseves and transmit knowledge. (this is from the social turn in epistemology). Which will probably see the principle of not trusting outside the group as a good thing. Nguyen points out that, thats how a echo chamber can forms and that's bad. Hence the conflict.

@@ZishanWazedBegg yes, i see ... it ultimately comes down to some sort of faith despite plurality, a recognition between cultures if you will, an ecosystem of humanity. however, humans often don't appear constructed to facilitate that, as we compete and lack trust, etc. at least that's my, i suppose, naive view on it. ty

​@@clumsydad7158 I'm sympathetic to what you are saying. We are prone to Dogma in the name of trusting the peers. And it will often appear as justified to have that kind of "faith". That's why the "trust first" principle perhaps works better rather than "peer first" (If I may call it) if one wants to avoid dogma

It's a good book! In fact, I especially like the lectures on history at the back of this edition, in which Collingwood sets out his radical presentist metaphysics.

Is there anyone out of the echo chamber? This reminds me of what every adolescent boy or girl writes in their scrapbook, something along the lines of "I hate hypocrites''. But if everyone hates hypocrites, then no one is a hypocrite? Or everyone is. Or only the one who says "I am a hypocrite" is not. And we're talking here about small-scale misunderstanding of our own capacity and behavior. Reality is not what it seems.
