I watched this video 5 weeks before I took the CAE and it completely stressed me out. I read some comments where people said that it wasn’t possible to pass the exam with less than one month of preparation if it was your first Cambridge exam. After reading those comments I was devastated and felt like I would not pass the exam. Over the course of the next few weeks, I didn’t really do a lot of preparation. I watched some videos on KZbin and completed some practice tests online, but I didn’t buy any study materials. I achieved a score of 203 and some friends of mine who started preparing the day before the exam also passed the exam with grade B (190-199). A lot of students at my school took the test but unfortunately I only know the score of 7 people. 2 (including myself) passed with grade A, 4 passed with grade B or C and only one did not achieve C1 (she had a score of 179 so it was pretty close, note that she didn't prepare for the exam at all). For reference: We are in year 11 in a German public school. Don’t let other people discourage you. It is possible to pass the exam with only a few days of preparation if you speak English at a C1 level. My recommendations: - Google “CAE Use of English practice tests” and use the website “engexam.info” to practice reading and Use of English - Watch the videos of teacher phill about the writing part - Watch the video “CAE - Writing an Essay (I write a C1 Advanced Essay!)” by CAEexamtips - Watch some videos on how to succeed in the speaking part (e.g. by Oxford Online English) - On the Camebridge website there is a sample test that you can download. The different parts of the exam are always the same so take good look at them - Try to get a good night's sleep the day before the exam and relax! I hope that this helps and good luck to anyone who is taking the test.

Hey, just wanted to pop on and let you know, I had the exact same experience. This video freaked me out a bit (but in general, your videos are great, Ben, thanks so much for all the effort you put in these, they really helped me!), and in the end I got 203 points as well. I prepared for the exam for roughly four weeks, but there were multiple days in a row, during which I just couldn't find the motivation or time. And if I did something, it was only for 2-3 hours a day. If you already have a good level of English, you will have no problems. Just get familiar with the exam questions. I only did sample tests beforehand, I didn't learn grammar or vocabulary. For the sample tests I mainly used the book "Advanced Trainer" and the book "Grammar & Vocabulary". Also, the tip from Ben doing Parts 5, 6, 7, 8, 4 first in the Reading and Use of English part was amazing! That way you don't have to rush while reading the texts. Good luck with the exam!

Okay to everyone totally freaking out me and my friend spent about three days preparing for this test and we both passed. She got 203 and i got 196 points. Yesterday I recieved my results from my Cambridge Advanced examination for which I spent an overall 4 hours of preparation throughout 2-3 days. All I prepared for was the exam structure and the writing part. (Just fyi I have been enganged with english basicly since I started preschool and I was sure my skill at the language was at around B2-C1). My overall score was 206/210 and my weakest part was the Writing, so my advice would be to absolutely focus on that. The Reading and Use of English parts are easy enough, Speaking fine if you keep your head cool. The Listening part is where you need a real strategy becuase the time is very very tight (I barely made it with a couple seconds remaining). But still I went hoping to verify my expected skill at English and ended up getting quite a good score and a certificate acknowledging I am at a C2 level.

What I can truly recommend while preparing for the CAE listening exam is listening to the British radio. Personally I use radiogarden, where you can search for the radio in any country you're interested in. It definitely improved my listening skills, since radio speakers speak quite fast. A few other things that might help is talking to yourself in English whenever you can, this way the speaking part won't be so intimidating. Writing a diary or essays on topics that you're interested in is also a pleasant form of practise. Whenever I want to check my essays I either use grammaly (usually for spelling and simple grammar mistakes) or chat gpt and ask what could have been written better. Hope it helps

I'd have loved to maybe have a notice with time in advance but our faculty staff sent the mails about a week ago and said "hey, you have to take the exam at the end of November and beginning of December or the next semester!!" I think I can make it but I'm still nervous because I graduate next semester and if I don't get a C1 level I have to retake it and cover all the expenses on my own (about 200 dollars). Hope I can make it!

Thank you! Your videos ramp up my motivation for studying. I really enjoy the challenge the exam provides. In practical terms, however, it's difficulty is questionable. Many scholarships, universities and job positions require a C1 certificate. But I'm not sure if an average candidate uses all these fancy idioms, collocations and phrasal verbs in day-to-day communication. Moreover, every field has it's fixed terms. And once you memorize them, you can freely interact with coworkers/fellow students. From what I see, the exam is more for passionate language learners than for practical purposes. Nevertheless, it's 2 times cheaper than IELTS... And the cost is comparable to an average salary in my country. So my choice was obvious) Now I'm not sure I'll pass, but I also don't have 6 months since first scholarship deadlines are in November. I decided to at least take joy in the process.

Absolutely true, even a very accomplished learner will need to study and practise exam technique, let alone fine tune their grammar and improve their range of vocabulary. I've managed to help students to pass in 3 months, but they were good students to start with. Why do people leave it so late to get help? Maybe an intensive course could help, but that depends on their starting point of course. Your tips, as always, are on point. I can't think of anything else to add, except on the day before the exam I usually advise the following: 1. Relax and just listen or read English for enjoyment- no note taking! 2. On the day of the speaking exam, don't speak your native language at all - unless you must talk to a bus driver or taxi driver for example. Avoid talking to other candidates in your native language - get into the groove right from the start of exam day. No native language TV, music or radio - only English!

Does the test measure your real English? I mean, if you have to learn an strategy to pass the test, that would be your English in real life? I took the IELTS and got 7.5, so I thought that's great! I'm fluent. However when I had to interact with native English speakers was quite tough to me.
@tothepointenglishwithben.3 жыл бұрын
Well, strategy has a lot to do with it and it's possible to pass the C1 Advanced with a strong upper intermediate level if you know the format very well and have prepared months in advance. Remember, the speaking paper is just one part of a big exam so spoken fluency is not everything.

Okay, so I watched this video when I started practicing and I'm writing this comment for I think it would be helpful to others :) First, thank you for so many vids, I'm sure they help out a massive amount of students ! I did watch a few of them and they were definitely helpful, however, I only began practicing for this exam ~one week before it (honestly it was only a few days lmao), but I've been studying English at school for 8 years, so since third grade (currently in 11th) and have always been an A-student. Therefore, I pretty much knew everything important already. So, I started practicing a few days before the exam with the typical structures of it, so I'd know what would be coming. I was super excited but also nervous on the day, but the exam itself really was super easy! I THOUGHT I had struggles with the listening - turns out I scored incredible 210 points🎉! Overall, I passed with C2 level and guys, trust me when I say: If you're good at what you do, don't be nervous. Few days of prep were more than enough for me, so for some of you it'll be the same

Thanks for sharing your experience and congratulations! Great score! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 However, in my experience, you are the exception. The vast majority of candidates taking the Cambridge English exams don't prepare enough and end up regretting it. That's not to say there aren't more students like you out there who don't need more than a few days but, in general, that's not sufficient.

Hahahah great video. I'd like to take the CAE exam in the end of this year but I don't know if I will pass it...This exam is hard even for native omg... why did they create such a hard exam? Couldn't it be a little less complicated?
@tothepointenglishwithben.3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think it is unnecessarily complicated in some aspects. But, as I said in the video, the Cambridge exams are the most prestigious for a reason.

Hi teacher I am still studying for the exam, and I have 3,5 months left. But I think I forgot to mention sth. at my previous comments : I am studying at english preparation class. What I mean by that is I have been learning english for 6 months continuously. When I started,I didn't know anything, maybe 500 words and some grammar. But now, I know almost all the grammar,a lot of vocab, and everything is so fresh in my mind. And I would like to ask you sth. about this : I think I am good enough at Listening and Speaking sections, but I am not good enough at reading and writing sections. When ıt comes to grammar,I am good at ıt but exam format is just a bit different from normal, so I just have to get used to USE OF English section. My question is this : How should I spend my time to be better at the sections that I lack , and how can I guarantee the best score(210) at the parts which I already feel I am good enough. Thanks a lot for videos and answering

Do as many sample papers as possible. You need to be very familiar with all of the parts of the exam.

Hey Ben! I have just received my grade. I got 201 points! C2 level! I can't believe it! (only 1 extra point hehe). Thank you so much for your videos! Your content has been really helpful! For anyone here who may be wondering if it possible to prepare the Advanced exams in one month or less, it definitely is. However, I would say that this only applies to people with already a very good level or those lacking maybe in only on part of the exam. Besides, you should be practicing A LOT. I was in quarantine (My sister had covid), so I spent the whole day practicing use of English (I downloaded an app for that) or listening to podcasts and other media. Good luck guys! And thank you Ben again! I will for sure recommend your channel to my friends!
