It's not about being 'better than a native speaker', that's not a good comparison to make. It's about demonstrating knowledge of language that native speakers won't necessarily use, on a daily basis. Realistically, a native speaker simply has better discourse ability, semantics, pragmatics etc., whereas a non native speaker will often have better lexis. And lexis is only one aspect of language. So, no, a C2 user is in no way 'better than a native speaker' because you're comparing something as simple as 5, 6, 7 years of classroom language study to 20, 30, 60, 80 years of language experience in context: school, clubs, work, social life on a daily basis. Neither is 'better', they are simply different.

Perhaps you're right. I was just trying to emphasise that, for the exam, the candidates need to use grammatical structures and vocabulary that native English speakers don't tend to use. Maybe 'better' wasn't the word to use.
@danielnarcisozuglianello8281

Every measure is bound to a metric. That the required level is 'better than native' is to be interpreted exclusively within the context of academic and literary language use. Were we to refrain from such crude contexts, we would invariably enter the realm of sociolinguistics, wherein no dialect deserves to be claimed 'THE standard'.

On CPE/C2 informal, gentry, and middle-class vernacular use of english will certainlly not be tolerated and deflates scores to CEFR C1 level. Political correctness and general textual/thematic politeness is also imposed/expected with similar effects. On CPE/C2 you are expected to write and speak almost flawlessly in General to Advanced Received Pronunciation/Grammar/Style, following the "New Oxford Style Manual" (post 2010), Fowler's "Modern English Usage, Revised Edition" (post 1997 - Burchfield and Fowler), and Gower (2014) "The Complete Plain Words", and most 1950 to 1970 grammar guides. Post 80's Grammar manuals are adulterated by leftie (cultural studies) scholars and their teleology. In resume at C2 level you need to demonstrate you are able to write and speak like Royalty, Nobility, Clergy, Government Ministers, Doctoral Professors, Embassators and Foreign Representatives, High Hierarchy/Prestige Office Elected Officials, and notable writters from The Times, Oxford University Press and Cambridge University Press, as well as proofreaders and copy-writers in ultra high-stakes bussiness. Anyway you must not use technical jargon or words in obsolescence unless it is expressly adequate to the theme, and situational context proposed on each test section. Soft to Middle strenght Indian and commonwealth accents (non-UK) are tolerated but will get you a lower to middle A score tops. On CAE high-middle class American and International English will get you CEFR C1's C to B Scores, and Multicultural London English will get you a CEFR B2 score tops if you have luck and they realize your first language or your family's first language isn't english. General Received English Pronunciation/Style and Grammar is still ideal if you are aiming at a C2 or a High B C1 Grade through CAE. Which certification will be apropriate to you will depend on how much time you intend investing. A fine way of studying for C2 is getting your Cambridge Delta. I would recomend you study for CAE and CPE concomitantly, sit a CAE test first and then go for a Delta Degree if you score middle to top C1, or even enroll an English Literature Degree. Only after a C2 will be relevant unless you work in million-dollar stakes bussiness. C1 Bussiness will get you past most Bussiness Carrers and Undergraduate University Courses up to an MBA. CAE is the ideal for other areas of inquiry. FCE is the test if you don't want be an academic. With an B at CAE/C1 ou are able to work as text translator or interpreter on most Academic and Low Stakes settings as long as you have equivalent C2 skill at your own mother language (which most people also doesn't possess) and understand the Status Quaestionis of the intended discussed topics. MOST NATIVE SPEAKERS WILL NEVER EVER OPERATE IN A GENERAL/CONSERVATIVE RECEIVED ENGLISH LEVEL LET ALONE PASS A C2 EXAMINATION OR EVEN GET A C1 HIGH B SCORE on CAE. It's not even a matter of how much or long you study or practice english, but a matter of general and verbal fluid intelligence. You get a B at CAE as a native you are a language geek and you are on the top 20% general and verbal intelligence population stratum.

I really wish I had found this video sooner. I took the CAE exam because I'm considering studying english, my teacher advised me to go with this particular exam. I was a bit overconfident and didn't prepare much, basically just got familiar with writing forms and took some tests few days before the assesment date. I think that watching this video would've given me a motivation to actually study for it, I would've avoided so much stress. In the end I managed to pass with grade A, but that was the the trickiest english test I have ever taken and I greatly underestimeted it. Amazing video, very informative!

I am glad I came across your channel. I was wondering if you could explain how (if applicable) the BCCI IPEC C1 Excellence level is different from the C1 or C2 Cambridge level. I took and passed (85/100 points) this exam in 2001 when I was an Erasmus exchange student in Italy and I have never wondered until recently what the difference between them actually is (if any). As a matter of fact, I still haven't seen any exam worse than that one (when the Italian students complained about the 'Listening' being far too difficult), considering that ESP had to be used (economics to be more precise). The exam structure was similar to the CPE but there was another test specially designed for us: we had 5 minutes to deliver a presentation relating to an imaginary company and product(s) using specialised terminology and an additional translation test from Italian to English (which we didn't have to take since we were not Italian native speakers). All in all, the exam started at 9.00 a.m and ended around 5 p.m.

There are great differences between the two exams. GRE is generally used for postgraduate entrance exam level (master, phd,...) so it focuses on verbal and math competencies. For the verbal per se, it focuses on logic, critical thinking, verbal reasoning, a good range of vocabulary (which is more or less academic relevant). Even in the writing part, the "verbal reasoning" essence and academic vocabulary/style should be salient in your writing. Plainly, you write in a way that a formal newspaper, a piece of academic journal, any formal form of communication medium writes, with logic and reasoning. Now, C2 is a completely different style. First, C2 does not have math evaluation. Second, C2 judges 4 skills (when GRE is only for 2 as explained above. To be fair, writing is a third component of a GRE test). Writing in C2 will encompass sentence transformation (which requires mastering idioms, phrasal verbs, colloquial phrases,...), vocabulary (well, from A1 to C2 of all things), and use of English (you need to master both detonations - dictionary meaning, and connotations - emotional meaning, of words). As the highest form of an English test, C2 outclasses any other exam because it is about everything that may or might appear in English language (at least in written form). To this extent, GRE measures something else and C2 is another thing (but much bigger). Let's take this as a decisive conclusion: validity of TOEFL/IELTS is 2 years; that of GMAT/GRE is 5 years, but that of C2 is permanent (life time). This alone is enough to say what C2 means. When you apply for postgraduate programs, no school will ask you a C2 but simply GMAT/GRE, not because they don't like C2 but because GMAT/GRE evaluates the things they need to see (math + verbal reasoning + writing in an academic way). However, if the program asks for TOEFL/IELTS and you don't have it but you have C2, I am 100% sure they will accept your C2 and have no complaint. In fact, they will love you more because even the native English speakers may not have C2 because C2 is e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g about English.

At C2 you have knowledge and skill equivalent or necessary to hold a Bachelor's Degree in English Language or Linguistics. Only 2 to 9 percent of native speakers reach this level of proficiency, which could be called "Mastery". At C1 you have knowledge and skill equivalent or necessary to hold up to a Doctoral Degree in any field OTHER THAN English Language or Linguistics. Only 8 to 25 percent of native speakers reach this level of proficiency. At B2 you have knowledge and skill equivalent to 45 to 75 percent of native speakers. This is the level actually required to hold jobs in administration, technical/vocational courses or to enroll at most universities on exact sciences, natural sciences or IT related courses. Exam requirements are always higher than actual societal demands. Scoring High B's on FCE actually means you are proficient in practice, even if a C on CAE formally recognizes Operative Proficiency. @@hasrihashim9136 It's not my opinion. This kind of thing is discussed outside of UK in courses to become an examinator (not invigilator) after you reached C1 level and is aiming at certifying C2. In many cases after the test (CAE, CPE and IELTS Academic) The British Council representing Cambridge Assessment personally calls you to congratulate you, they even tell you their executives need to do and pass these tests and the almost totality of successful ones score B2 Overall, which is the required score to be invigilator also. Most natives will have very high scores in listening and speaking, scores above C2, but scores on writing and text comprehension will fluctuate in between B1 and B2. These scores tend to be higher in natives right after they leave high school but plumet after college. Foreigners at level B2 tend to demonstrate higher formal/normative knowledge than natives age 30 to 40. Also, general inteligence strongly influences natives results, and the score distribution reflects this.

You will only be required a C2 score if you plan to do a Master's or Doctoral study on English Language or Literature. Otherwise a C2 is Useless. Most native speakers will never achieve a C2 score even with preparation.

Yes, you can say you have a C2 level but you won't have a C2 certificate. It depends on the employer/university etc as to whether they are of equal value. Some specifically ask for the certificate.

I haven’t studied at all for this exam and didn’t even sleep five hours… Now I want to take the c1 advanced exam and thought about taking a bigger step and try the c2 right away (with studying obviously). What are your thoughts about my idea? Do you think I could pass?

Hi Jonas. You could possibly take the C1 in a year or so (with a lot of studying) but it's a huge jump from B2 First to C2 Proficiency. You would need to dedicate all your time to English and even then it would take at least a couple of years.

Hi Ben, I've passed the First Certificate in May 2017 with Grade A (182 pt.). Now I have half a year to prepare for either the CAE or CPE. Which one do you recommend me to study for? At first, I thought I'm going to try the CPE as I already accomplished a Level C1 certificate, but now I'm unsure whether the gap from FCE Grade A to CPE is too big, and I would need more time to prepare for it. For your info, I've tried the Sample CPE Online Test and scored about 80% in the Listening paper, and 70% in the Reading and Use of English paper but see my weakness mostly in complex vocabulary. Thanks in advance for your help!
@tothepointenglishwithben.

Judging by your scores in the sample paper and the fact that you have a year and a half to prepare, you should go for the C2 proficiency. You have plenty of time to expand you vocabulary... I'd recommend you read a lot in English - many different types of text. Also, keep a "personal dictionary" of words, phrasal verbs and expressions.

These exams test you on skills that have little to nothing to do with your language skills. Just like in the English exams in Germany. It's upsetting, because you get a mediocre grade in the subject of English engraved in your report for life if you're not that good at these specific additional non-language skills but virtually on the level of a native speaker.
