Awesome videos. I saw on one of your vids where you was on the toilet yelling at the phone "Shut up and weld something!" Right then I knew this guy understood his audience. You talk just enough to break up the monotony and explain complicated things in a straight forward and easy to understand manner. Those 2 things alone are extremely rare on KZbin. Keep it up. You got a new subscriber today.

Funny how the 20 miles feels like a lot to get to the other side of town, but some of the people watching this probably live on properties that have a 20 mile long driveway :) Great to see this redesign happen in a way that requires you to just have faith in your measurements without the luxury of multiple trial-fits. I'm looking forward to it all coming together in the next episode. Thanks for releasing interesting and positive videos to the world. I don't know if you kick holes in the walls off-camera if things go wrong during your builds, but the on-screen vibe is that you're cool as a cucumber and completely unphased about the work ahead. Very cool.

Hahaha! I’m not much of a wall kicker, Craig. I’m more of a crier. I once spent several weeks working on a custom suicide door hinge for a Lexus, only to find that the door only opened 45° before hitting the body. There were certainly tears. I think I can count on one finger the amount of times I’ve thrown a wrench. Probably because I’m struggling with something, and then hitting my head on something. A good nog bonk is an instant anger trigger for me. Thank you Craig!!

Great stuff Dr. ManKandy! I love the attention to the details, which is what really makes it so great. The fabrication and the production are both so top notch. For example that 3:00 music background at the end and speeding the footage to match the beats with the hole drilling, but what was even better was the hammer taps before that. Tell me that we are striving for going above and beyond, but we are also going to have fun as we go without overtly telling me. Well maybe the hammer taps are a little overt, haha.

Oh!! You mean the little 2 inch square pieces that I welded to the front link bar tabs… It makes sense now. It could go all the way across, but I’d have to put a crazy tall hump in the middle to clear the driveshaft. So instead the square tubing you’re talking about will just rest on top of the frame with some beefy gussets on the sides.

Man you make this a lot easier to understand by far..I'm having some trouble trying to figure if 24 inch bars would work on a Chevy 1500 2wd and what thickness the bars should be..thanks and keep up the great work 🤘🤘
@GarageFab
@GarageFab Жыл бұрын
Hey Danial! 24 inches seems pretty short to me for rear links, but it really all depends on what your plans are for the truck. Will you have adjustable height suspension like air springs or hydraulics? Or static height like coil overs? Normally I would recommend making the link bars as similar in length to the drive shaft as possible. Especially on adjustable height vehicles. If your bars are too short, you risk having the driveshaft slip-yoke pull out of the transmission as the suspension cycles. If you are using a static height suspension, this is much less likely and 24 inch bars might be just fine. How did you decide on 24 inch link bars? As far as wall thickness, I can only tell you what I use. I am not an engineer so unfortunately I can’t tell you what you SHOULD use. On loadbearing link bars, (link bars that have a coil over or an air spring on them, that supports the weight of the truck) I consistently use 2 inch mild steel square tubing with quarter inch walls. And on my loadbearing linkbars, I use 1.5 inch mild steel round tubing with 1/8 inch walls. Thank you, my man!
@danialrousseau4346
@danialrousseau4346 Жыл бұрын
@@GarageFab Thanks for the response it makes sense to go with longer bars for sure I was on a website not sure which one it was and they had 24 inch bars on there. The truck will have hydraulics on it with either 6 or 8 inch cylinders, I was planning on using the 1/4 inch walled tubing but wanted a second opinion you've been a great help thanks buddy

I would enjoy hearing your science on shock location on this truck. Where in relation to the frame/3rd member/axle ends is best?
@GarageFab
@GarageFab Жыл бұрын
Hey Bryan. I dropped the ball on this one. There are more C10 suspension episodes to come, but the truck is actually already done. I was too busy to film when I installed the shocks so unfortunately no one will get to see the process on this truck specifically. 😬 I will be going over sizing and installing shocks on the Mighty Max though. It’s the same process regardless of the vehicle. I can tell you now, shocks should be mounted as close to the wheels as possible for two reasons; Shocks become less effective as they get closer to the differential, and they would also put excess stress on the axle tube over sharp bumps if they’re mounted too far in. I’ll be working on the shock video soon so hopefully I can answer all your questions there. Cheers!

Hey there, I deleted my previous comment because I re-read it and I sounded like I knew it all, and that I do not. I do know that vehicles that have a non parallel 4 link with a panhard bar like a Toyota 4runner if you were to use rod ends on all pivot points the suspension would be frozen in place, after thinking about it might not be the case with a parallel 4 link, I would have to model it. I like the idea of rod ends everywhere because they move things exactly where they are put, rod ends make movement completely predictable and make bind easier to spot. My dislike for bushings is that the same deflection in bushings that allows articulation in a parallel 4 link is the same deflection that changes pinion angle under acceleration and braking, even if so slightly. there is an un-predictability to the amount of movement you get out of bushings. Since you're quite good at teaching theory I really hope you make a video about live axle suspension articulation where I am sure I will learn things. Whether you're, trying to hit 3 wheel motion, flexing on the rocks or trying to limit body roll, how design articulation into suspension can drastically affect your desired performance. Glad to see someone else super interested in suspension, Keep up the great content!

Thank you, Kelly! If I’ve got one gift I’m extra proud of, it’s not being easily offended or assuming the worst in people’s writing. I too do NOT know it all. In fact, some of the terminology you’ve used went way over my head. This is the main reason I’m making videos on suspension basics… and I may not go much farther than that. I’ve got a lot more to learn before I can comfortably teach. I’ll be looking into some of your points. You got my brain juices flowing.

Any advice on cutting a perfect 2" half circle on the end of a piece of 2.5" square tube?

Have you got any hole cutters? I just recently released a video on cutting holes without a pilot bit, which included holes on the edge of a piece of material. If you haven’t already, check it out. The answer you’re searching for might be there. kzbin.info/www/bejne/raKUZ2ytf8hob9U You could also sculpt it with a flap disc, but the perfection just won’t be there.

Unfortunately, Refugio, I don’t! I’ve got experience with multiple brands and they all seem to suck. And they suck even worse if you live in a humid climate. The valves often leak, (both up and down) and they need to be rebuilt often. I have not yet tried the Slam Specialties unit. That’s not a recommendation… I don’t know anything about it! The only air system I’ve ever had that was flawless was separate valves from Blitzluft or Parker, but then you don’t have the cool automatic features. 🤷‍♂️

Love the content! Really appreciate all the extra details and mockups for explaining concepts. How precisely aligned do your 4 link brackets need to be? So if the front bracket measures 4 inches in from the frame rail, ideally the rear bracket on the axle would also be 4 inches in from the frame however what tolerances (i.e. 1/16, 3/16, etc) could it be off and still function appropriately?
@GarageFab
@GarageFab Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I appreciate you back. Think of it this way, Chase; The triangulated four link has parallel bars on the bottom, but the top bars form a triangle. This means that the bushings for the top bars are mounted towards the center of the vehicle on one end, while the other ends are mounted near the frame rails. This is several inches (if not feet) of a difference between the front and the rear bushings. This system still works just fine. That was a long winded way of saying small measurements won’t affect much. This is NOT saying you shouldn’t take pride in your work. Get things as close as you possibly can, just don’t stress about it! What project are you working on, and what are the plans for it?

@@GarageFab good deal. I have definitely been stressing about getting things perfect and given this is my first build it's been quite the learning curve. I'm working on an 86 Toyota mini truck. 4 link, bags, supra motor....

Love your videos . I've learned a lot from your channel . How are the RotaCut Hole Cutters holding up ?
@GarageFab
@GarageFab Жыл бұрын
Thank you, Billy! They are quite incredible! I image they probably dull eventually but they haven’t yet and it’s been years. If I have one gripe, it’s that they’re brittle. I’ve broken two cutters (1/4 and 3/4 inch) by using them in a hand drill and tweaking them wrong. They bind and shatter. I’ve never broken one in the drill press. 🤷‍♂️

this is a cool video. I don’t think its long distance though haha. Come to Massatwoshit and design a air ride for the Hardbody haha.. I checked the link for the plasma cutter you have and its not available any more on amazon. I am looking at 2 from tractor supply a Forney 40 P and a Hobart 27i which would you recommend? Happy New Year Brother!

Haha! No thank you, Dina! 😂 I can tell you I would certainly be a lot more careful about my measurements and planning if I was working on some thing that far away. I honestly don’t know anything about either of those plasma cutters. I have had Hobart welders and I know it’s a good brand. I think I would just base my decision on what reviews I read.

what size and where do you get your bushings from?
@GarageFab
@GarageFab Жыл бұрын
I get all my stuff from Thorbros.com at the moment. The sizes change depending on what I’m making. For link bars they’re generally 2 inch bushings varying from 2.5 to 4 inches wide. The bushings in this video so far are not even bushings at all. They’re made from aluminum and are used to build the suspension and then they’re replaced with real bushings. I get those from Thorbros also!
