Bust out the card stock again! It's time to make some air bag mounts for the rear suspension on Keith's '71 C10. Don't have a C10? No sweat. The process is the same on any vehicle; Set the suspension to the fully lowered height, and start trimming cardboard to fit the frame.

Great video, as always. I always like it when content creators show their mistakes. It shows everyone that no one is infallible and to be more understanding when we do things wrong the first time. It's all a part of the process. Thanks for sharing that even though it would have been easy to omitt it. Looking forward to seeing your next video and how those bag mounts fit. Now I'm going to watch this one again.

Mistakes?! What mistakes? I don’t make mistakes. I am indeed infallible. That part where I screwed stuff up and had to start over… All part of the plan my man. Sometimes the only way to do things right is to do them several times. 🙌

@Garage Fab 100% correct mindset. It can be frustrating, especially when you think you have thought of everything. That is something my dad has taught me. Think from the other end of a project and try to think of what can go wrong, not right. If you can think of what might go wrong, getting it right won't be as hard.

@GarageFab
@GarageFab Жыл бұрын
Hey Christian! How are things? On this particular one, no. I wouldn’t have had to remove and reinstall the rear link bar tabs obviously, but I would have had to modify the notch in a crossmember and also would’ve had to make the driveshaft tunnel in the cab taller. So in the end, though two single U joints would’ve been the correct choice, we decided to save him some money since we knew this truck didn’t have any strange vibrations before I started working on it. And it’s paid off. It’s vibration free at the moment.

Nice!!! So Is the Double Cardan joint at the transmission? If so, have you seen one that will work with a M5Od-r2 (89 ish F-150 manual). I'm running truck arms on the 50 (Yeah, I know it is a bad idea) it would be awesome if I could set it up with a Double Cardan. Oh, I need to go back and watch the pinion angle video, haven't seen it yet. And re watch the Watts link video. Thank you for all of the great content!!!
@GarageFab
@GarageFab Жыл бұрын
Yes it is! I’m not familiar with your transmission, but a double cardan is a double cardan. It all depends on the suspension design and the set up. Your truck arm is the ideal system for the double cardan. On yours, the double joint will indeed be in the front, nearest the transmission, and the rear single joint will be nearly straight (1 to 2° bend) meaning the pinion is pointed at the back of the transmission. Definitely check out the driveshaft video. I think it’ll benefit you a lot .

@@GarageFab Yes sir going to do some more looking. M5OD-r2 is the Mazda 5 speed in the full size, the ranger had the M5OD. Should use the same yolk as an AOD? Maybe? I'm familiar with DC at the transfer case for the front drive shaft. Also the ones on the early 70s ish Impala/ caprice that were at the pinion. Just hadn't generated much with a search result for a DC joint at the trans.

Good on you for taking the risk! When you can create MIG welds that look as good as TIG - even welding vertically - it's a risk worth taking. Bummer about having to redo the 4 link brackets on the housing end. Especially in that kind of weather. That's rubbing salt into the wound. I hope your friend appreciates the effort that's going into this work.

Your mentioned welding mental dilemma is my months long struggle now.... I've come to a point where I just think I have to blame my machine ( Lincoln Pro-Mig 175 - the box store special from 15 years ago, still runs on 220v....but extremely limited on "dialing it in" capabilities)..even tho I don't at all want to blame the machine at all, I just don't know what else I can do. I have spent hours and hours trying to get some great looking weld aesthetics... and I just can't, I get "good", but I want better. They're good welds, but I just can't get the perfectly formed round stack, I get more of the forward V, and it really looks like it's because my puddle is too fluid and doesn't cool fast enough (even with increased travel speed), or I get more blended round stacks without the great definition like you get with that ESAB. I told ya all that to ask ya this, because I can tell you have experience to give an honest opinion..... do you think it's the welding machine that allows that last little jump to "great" aesthetics? (actual weld quality aside, just talking aesthetics here), if so, do you know (or have an opinion on) what about allows the jump? Inductance adjustment is what I've been leaning on as of late, but I don't have the adjustment to mess with on the ol' base model...so I can't be sure, and the commitment to a better machine isn't justifiable to me, unless I'm confident that will at least help.
@GarageFab
@GarageFab Жыл бұрын
This may or may not surprise you, but I know very little about welding. I’m fully self taught, (aside from the help of book and article authors) and I’m not certified. It gets better! I don’t know what inductance is! I know my Esab has adjustable inductance and I’ve played with it in an attempt to learn, but I didn’t see much of a change at either end of the spectrum. I will try and read up on it over the next few days for both your sake and for mine. Here’s my opinion. Settings are the most important (Wire speed and voltage anyway) and technique comes in a close second. You can have crap looking welds with perfect settings if you don’t have good technique. And you can have crappy looking welds with perfect technique and bad settings. I also believe that the specific welder has a LOT to do with it, even though I can’t finger on why. The welder I mentioned in the video at Keith’s house was a nightmare. No matter what I did, I made novice looking welds. I occasionally get to use a Miller 212, and my welds like a CNC machine! No joke, far better than any weld I’ve filmed. Why? I DON’T KNOW!! People have been asking me to make a welding video for quite some time. I’ve been refusing because I am not certified, but lately I’ve been considering it. It would be presented as strictly a techniques video, but I’m still planning on a huge amount of backlash. It should be fun! That might be the next video if I don’t get the bushings I ordered in time for my two-week video release date. Can you get your hands on another welder? Just to try out and see how things look?

Great job Aaron Bugger about the first set of axel tabs but hay it's only steel and you still had your templates. so what 20 - 40 Mins lost removing the old and making and setting the new. Reinforces the Tack first and final weld only once happy. Also what prevents you taking your welder tot he the Keith's.

Very true, Michael. Remaking the tabs with the templates I already had literally only took 10 minutes. Removing the tabs on the other hand was a nightmare. im looking to build an air ride system for a truck, the airmax d26000 bags have a usable stroke of 9.3 ish inches, does that mean i can run the truck at fully extended, or should i keep ride height an inch or 2 below that. i will be towing with the truck, and i am not sure if i will be able to get the hight i want running the bag on the axle.
@GarageFab
@GarageFab Жыл бұрын
You can run a bag fully inflated, Adam, but you certainly won’t want to. A bag at max height is a stiff one, and a stiff bag mounted to the axle will be very unpleasant. The comfort zone for a bag on the axle is somewhere near half inflated. What are you towing? The extra weight will certainly soften the ride a bit, but it’s unknown how much. Will this truck frame lay on the ground?

I'm gonna have to start hitting pause every time I take a drink while watching your videos from now on - lol. Quick question though - was replacing the u-joints even an option?
@GarageFab
@GarageFab Жыл бұрын
That shouldn’t be allowed. Watching my video at 4 am is almost like I’m up at 4 am… that’s not ok. Swapping to single joints was certainly an option. It was just a very unappealing option. The current drive shaft is already a custom shaft. (The decision to install the double cardan on a vehicle with a parallel 4 link confuses me) So changing the joints would mean another custom shaft. Also, because the drive shaft was hitting the crossmember, (and then the shaft tunnel in the cab) body and frame modifications would’ve also been needed. The truck is painted already, so that was ugly. Keith assured me that he had no vibration issues before I started hacking his truck up, so I essentially just put it back the way I found it. Good to see you again, Tee Jay!

Well hopefully this one doesn’t bite me in the arse, but there shouldn’t be any need for change and so no use for adjustments. The pinion angle won’t need to be adjusted and extensive and very accurate measurements were taken to ensure the thrust angle was straight. Again, if he gets an alignment in the future and adjustments are needed aside from bushing replacements, I’ll be hating life.

Hey! I’m in Vegas. First I must mention that I no longer take on commissioned work. I no longer have the time or the room unfortunately. If you’re just shopping around for prices, it can vary greatly depending on the design, products used, and of course who does the work. I can imagine a range from $8500 with cheap equipment to $15,000+ for high quality name brand components built by well known fabricators. For what it’s worth, I’d be somewhere in the middle 10k-13k depending on the setup, and I’d push for quality components.

I can give you a rough idea, but again without working on it physically, the specific parts you’ll need will vary. 4 air springs and bag brackets for your truck, compressor(s), air tank(s), drop spindles up front, (probably). Frame notches and bridge, 4 or 5 link bar kit, (Bars, ends, bushings, bar mounting tabs) 4 shocks, air management system (valves or valve manifold), LOTS of fittings, DOT airline, (hardline is an option but much more expensive, braided brake lines that can handle the additional travel, Fuel cell (preferably) and the lines and other components needed to make it work. I’m sure I’m missing something but that’s a good start.

I was thinking if you positioned the airbag over the welded bend such that the airbag was vertical, you could make a plate for the airbag welded across the bend to give it triangular support, and then also slap a gusset on each side of the square tube up to under the same airbag plate to make it super strong. I think it also would have moved the airbag more inline with the chassis rail you needed to weld to for the top airbag plate and given yourself shorter cantilever and more weldable contact area to it.

You really should've welded a gusset/knee over the welded bend on your upper bar. As you said, the truck is heavy, so supporting it from behind the weld while the rest of the bar is bent, is just asking for trouble. It only needs to hit one pothole to collapse the whole rear axle support. Also that extra gurdle is necessary. If you could've extended that thin support gusset over the corner on the mount, it wouldn't be as necessary. The knee could act as a mounting plate for the air bag, bringing the bag more vertical (longer bag life) and dissipating the load on wider area over the upper bar. (longer suspension life)
@chrisw9451
@chrisw9451 Жыл бұрын
I'm right there with you on this one. The bags are made to do that kind of twist as they inflate, but it might just be my OCD kicking in that has to level out that mount over the elbow. Totally beautiful work, and so entertaining. 👏 Keep the videos coming.
@oikkuoek
@oikkuoek Жыл бұрын
@@chrisw9451 On a light vehicle, the bag can be mounted on an angle, or the travel can follow a curve, up to a point. Even then the lifespan of the setup is always shorter than on a straight and vertical. On heavier vehicles, trucks and busses, the bag has to be straight and vertical, otherwise they are constantly broken due to uneven load on the bag. But in this case, the bag itself is only part of thte problem. Bigger problem is the welded upper bar with no support, and just adding stuff on the sides is not good enough.

No faith!? I suppose that’s fair. Garage Fab is likely too new to have built any trust. I agree with everything you’ve said. All I can say is that there’s more episodes to come. You’re looking at the test fit of an unfinished bar. If you’re still not happy with the way the link bars turned out, only then will we be in disagreeance. (Is that a word?) Spoiler alert; this project is done and the truck has been on the road for months. (hence the 110° temperatures in the winter.🤔) I have no concerns about this system cracking or breaking.
@oikkuoek

@@GarageFab No faith. Only physics and scientific method. Yeah, it's an old reel, these usually are nowadays, the good old "Shoot, edit, upload" is sadly kinda rare. And from my personal experience with rat rods and choppers, months on the road does not make the design/vehicle any less of a death trap. One of the bike frames was literally held together with an artist paint brush. No joke. There used to be a bolt, but it probably got lost in the re-build process, and that brush was within reach. A bit spungy on turns, but years and miles on the road. Was it safe? No. Did it break? No. Should one push the envelope on customer builds? Also no. We'll see how this turns out, and I will give my honest, professional opinion on each step on the process.

On adjustable suspension, I think that’s a really good idea. That will keep your pinion angle constant and prevent driveline vibrations. On static suspension i.e. metal springs or coil overs, you probably don’t need to worry about that. In fact the shorter bars in addition to angling them towards each other on the front of the bars will it increase your traction a little bit off the line. I recommend doing a little reading on instant center to understand that better. Hope that made sense. This type of stuff is hard to explain without pictures.
