Thank you, Anna! It wasn't that hard like I thought originally. Just a usual speech like on the TED talk, for example. Many questions don't have the exact answer, so you can express your own opinion. I think I'm done well with that one. In my opinion, the real challenge will begin when you'll discuss some specific narrow topics like medical, technical, electrical and so on. I've been learning English for 3 and a half years, however, I sometimes have a hard time understanding some documentaries.

Agreed. The speech chosen is around average in complexity of language. For a C2 level, there are a hundred times harder and more appropriate texts that do fit the level more.

Well it’s very reasonable for you not being able to understand all the jargon. The ability to interpret jargon depends on your field of study. Don’t expect an IT guy to be able to understand what medical jargon means and vice versa. You can of course train yourself to understand these words by exposing yourself to a wide variety of topics for example by watching/reading a lot on specific/desired subjects. If you’re very proficient in the language, you can still somewhat interpret words correctly and can associate them with certain words in your vocab, so that will somewhat help you in the right direction.

I love Anna's videos. I developed the six tests. They are not memory tests and the are not English level tests neither. I got a perfect score in this one but I am pretty sure I am not a C2. They are good tests but they do not represent the English level. Besides some of the answers that she provided were too long, some of them start with "I think" so it cannot be a suggested answer if it is based on your opinion but not in the facts. I would like to see Anna giving a like to comments that agree with this, so we could see that she is reading us and taking these opinions to improve her videos so we do not look ignored, I only see likes to people that say, Yay I passed. Hi from Spain. I've got three answers right, so I need to improve my skills to get C2. Anyway, can you make a video with the pronunciation of the top 30 UK cities and the pronunciation of all regions and counties? There are some large words like Northamptonshire and Warwickshire which I don't know how to pronounce properly, including Stonehenge. Plus, I would like another video to hear how do you pronounce Paris, Madrid, Barcelone, Berlin, Lisbon, Moscow, Helsinki, Zurich, Rotterdam, Athens and other top continental European cities. I've heard how to pronounce them, but as there are more people from US than from the UK, I guess I've likely heard the american pronunciation rather than the british one. Thanks in advance.

@bryangiantomasi76712 жыл бұрын
To be completely honest, I find that the way these tests are built is rather discriminatory. They assess, in a way, the ability to understand implicit situations. However, this also depends on the analytical skills of the person taking the text ; let me explain. I am a young francophone student who has been studying English for a few years. I have a good level of English, although far from perfect. I fully understand the nuances of the speech you presented to us, so I managed to answer the questions quite easily. My neighbour, who is bilingual in English, also answered the questions, but made mistakes. The reason ? He is not very good at analyzing speeches and understanding its undertones. Does that mean my English is better than his? Of course not. It only means that I analyze a speech better than him. I am not in any way denigrating your work, which is remarkable, but rather I am denouncing the way English tests are generally constructed, especially to mark out the most advanced levels.
@billmorrigan386 Жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct. The real tests are also like this. They don't test only language skills. They rather test how sly and crafty you are with multiple choice answers and how much experience you have with such tests. Of course it also assesses your language skills but it's like 30% of the test, which is indeed ridiculous. I guess the worst tests are TOEFL and IELTS because they don't even test if you are C2 and how good your C2 is. They just test whether you are B2, B1, C2, and C1, doing it so roughly that it is almost meaningless. However they test you very well in terms of how smart (or rather sly and tricky) you are in terms of multiple choice questions and how well you can focus. You've got to stay very focused to pass such tests with high scores. It's very hard to train students for such tests. It's pretty unpleasant to tell them that, like, 10% of the test is actually ambiguous bs but it depends on the test. The writing and reading sections are the most ambiguous ones.
@parzivalify5 ай бұрын
Being able to understand, analyze and comment on undertones during spoken language is absolutely a critical skill on any language, and not being able to do so on your native language is actually a sign of autism. Communicating on a foreign language means not to be a walking dictionary, but rather being able to understand, form opinions and answer on all layers of language. Spoken nor writen language is a zero sum calculus. It is absolutely not a stationary or formulaic science. It has tones, undertones, figurative language, sarcasm, jokes, slangs, and it is completely subjective and dependent on context. That being said, yes, there absolutely is a degree of uncertainty in these exams, or any exam, really. There will be tricky questions, questions with multiple acceptable answers, very long, tiring tests and sometimes the person who evaluates your writen answers is just a pain in the ass, that absolutely will create problems with every sentence you write.

My Reading skills is at a firm C2 level, my listening is also C2 but not as 'solid' as the reading. My writing is around C1 if I am mentally prepared (For non-natives, I think you understand the differences...the time when you know you are going to write a real essay tomorrow and the time you casually reply to comments on social media on you bed. For the latter one, their language mode, like grammar, is half-functioned). My real problem is the speaking skill. I think it is only at B2 or a wobbly C1, a huge gap between understanding messages and communicating them. Many times, native speakers tried to speak to me slowly and use easy words which actually they didn't have to. I am now trying to improve my fluency in speaking and pronunciation. I am quite an extreme introvert so this is quite a challenge for me. By the way, I'm Thai. I can immerse myself in English texts and movies, thanks to the internet. But it is difficult to find a chance to converse in English. I mean a real conversation that requires an advanced level of English, not just chit-chatting with tourists and expats.

At first, I thought the test would have us correct Anne's grammatical errors, which would have been more easily quantifiable and gradable than this text comprehension exercise, which, in the latter half, has us answer questions based on our assumptions regarding what Anne was thinking when she gave the speech. How do you even grade that? Do YOU know what she was thinking when she gave that speech? Was the explanation perhaps published in a magazine soon after she gave it, and, if so, does that mean that only people who have read that magazine can get a full point for their answer to that question?

This is not English like a native. As a Dutch, I speak fluent English, for sure C2 level. But there is still a large difference with a native. Walking around outside, naming everything we see, in English. I will stumble over numerous things that I just don't know the word for. I tried to explain to someone I damaged my car on the pave walk, I should have used the word 'Curb', but that didn't come up as easily as it would to a native. Things I don't deal with on a daily basis, are not as available to me as the English language I use in my daily job. I once made the comparison to a native English walking into a forest and naming every tree by their English name. I just can't do that. "Ehm Oak, ehm don't know, don't know, don't know, Birch, don't know ... Even if I know the right names in Dutch, I can't translate to English.

Heyy, literally commenting in 2024, but the last 2 questions made me wonder if I could give longer answers, coming from a much deeper analysis (btw I'm brazilian and english is my second language, I've been studying it for basically 14 years, but once in a while I like to come back to these types of videos to refresh and gain more knowlodge, and it definitely helped, thank you from the bottom of my heart) 9- the choice of using the prefixes under and over is very much fitting, because it gives emphasis on how men are not obligated to be responsible for the duties as fathers and cohabitant of a house, because work is what they’re “made to do”, while mothers are the ones doing most, if not, all of the job, including having three or more shifts when it comes to work: house chores, her own career, and the emotional care of children and husband as a person and father 10- two sides of the same coin refer to the patriarchy, and how its expectations have bad repercussions in both men and women as individuals in a society

Based on that test I am C2 as I was able to understand 100% and answer the questions. However, I am not satisfied with my English. On one hand I try to enrich my vocabulary by studying new words, often not commonly used (The last 5 words from my notebook I need to study and remember are: debacle, dowry, urchin, libel, conniption). On another hand it is very difficult to watch a movie without, at least English, subtitles and understand everything. Especially when conversations happen over a fast action or when some strange dialects are in use. The thing is: all the natives CAN understand everything what I cannot. So, I don’t think I came anywhere near to a native in terms of English. So far, my experience is that it is fun to learn a language on a basic level. I remember having so much fun studying Italian 2 years ago as I was going for a trip to Rome and Venice but it’s so terribly hard and daunting task to level English with my mother’s tongue. I hate it but I need it badly.

I was able to answer the questions but in very short sentences, I am wondering if you mean to answer long like what you did?

I am just wondering whether this viedo is reasonably level or not because no matter how many time I try to take a look at it which too much of time are spent on worthless reading, listening and the other method as well as an opportunity not to have some development for me. In this context, that`s not cup of tea for us. Anyway I have a distinct pleasure of sharing it.

Does anyone know what happens if you score a mark below what’s required to reach C2 would you just fail or would you be given a C1 Certificate?

While comprehension isn't that hard, writing well still requires a lot of practice, though.

Frommy experience I have to say it was a tough test, My English comprehension is not so good now but at least I had an general understanding.

C2 maybe fluent..she said ....In my view C2 is very fluent you can do everything with the language I disagree with her ..and this test look likes more B2 level than C2 ..

B2 is almost if not fluent, let alone C2

this text is definitely not C2 level. the one about cycling in the UK is much longer and contains many complicated words (verbs mainly)

We'ren't you giving a vocal course online? I'm pretty sure about it

I guess I passed the test but I don't feel like I'm C2. irl I am not. Listening to native speakers and watching films are way harder than this. Also while I'm reading a novel, there are still many words I've never encountered before. When this happens, it makes me feel desperate. Vocabulary is a hopeless problem.

the video is pretty well made tbh but I just have a question... what if I had a deep conversation with me just for each question.? as an example on the last question I went from telling the context to a pulled over man that i saw yesterday o literally the same situation...
