Will it hurt if we replace the plastic gears with a metal gear to prevent future issues? I think there are metal gears available already for this in Lazada.

I personally will not replace for a metal gear... because that metal gear might be strong.. but it will compensate/destroy other parts. It is better that this plastic part that is always broken (maybe every 3-5 years)... it is easier to identify and replace.
