Except you forgot to mention that you need a pitman arm puller to get the steering to drop. I just unbolted the idler arm bracket. And the 1 piece, 2 dipstick hole part # is 10T not 09T

For easier lowering of steering linkage: could i not obtain the same result by removing idler arm bolts to frame and removing passenger side outer tie rod to spindle?

You did not have to remove the lower bell housing cover to remove back two 1/2" corner bolts? I did on ny 1980...

Hello, I have a 1974 350 small block and need to replace the oil pan and gasket. Are the part numbers you mention for the one piece gasket and the oil pan...are they the same part #'s for my '74 Corvette? I also read that the '74 350 small block holds 4 quarts oil? One more question... Regarding the oil pump. What do you recommend... High performance or OEM? THANKING YOU IN ADVANCE.
@aboutmyfathersbusiness83243 жыл бұрын
Yes they are 4 quart oil pans but with a filter is 4.5 quarts. Closer to 5. Beware there are two different types of pan gaskets. One with a fat front lip and the other with the thin. Just make sure dipstick is on the appropriate side and appropriate front lip. I recommend OEM as a new one will give you added oil pressure due to new tolerances in the pump. Never tried a HP pump

Same process for a 69 big block? I am about to do this also but I have a big block. Am I going to run into any differences than a small block or is it the same procedures? I am also changing the front seal and replacing my shot harmonic balance that I have discovered, which brings me to the question if you know, can the rear seal also be replaced when the pan is off? It doesn't leak yet but it is closing in on 30 years since last replaced, or am I in lala land on the rear seal? I have stock exhaust.
@TheWhatisright4 жыл бұрын
It is my understanding you may have some issues with the exhaust getting in the way. Part numbers torque values may also differ.

Just curious if you have ever taken off the timing gear cover. I am getting a 1970 Corvette next month and was wondering if the Corvette 350 engines used nylon gear teeth on the upper timing gear. My 71 El Camino had the nylon teeth and they shattered all at once stalling me on the road. I replaced the gear-set with an all metal Cloyes Double Roller gear-set and chain. If the Corvette engines used nylon teeth, then I will replace the timing gear-set before it stalls me on the road. I liked your oil pan removal video because the oil pan needs to come off before the timing cover can come off. Your video will be very useful to me. Thanks!
@TheWhatisright4 жыл бұрын
Yes I have had the cover off, I have the metal Cloyes double roller gear on mine. The single gear was standard on the car. Thank you for the comments on the video. Always good to help others.

Thank you corvette friend for the comments. Did I make an error in the video somewhere?
@TheWhatisright4 жыл бұрын
The reason I had to change the Gasket was because of a leak near the timing chain cover. I was messing with the cover and developed a self inflected leak (all my fault). That meant I had to change it out with a new one. Otherwise no leaks.

Hey hop I am replacing the starter on 83 CE starter and found it drenched in oil, I am now looking to replace both valve cover gasket, is it better to use GM corked stamped for the 350 or use the liquid gasket.
@TheWhatisright4 жыл бұрын
Use the one piece Gasket for sure unless you want everything original. I have never had a one piece gasket leak on me except the one I messed up myself by messing with the timing chain cover.

@@TheWhatisright Thanks brother, btw it is an 82 my typo earlier. I have done so many 350's and 400's each time things turn out different, So is the one-piece cork or rubber better to use. I know on the 305's the corked always got the job done, but just have to remember to tighten them until they seat. Hopefully, I can get this thing trustworthy to make a trip down south and we can meet up and you can see what I am working with.
@TheWhatisright4 жыл бұрын
@@coldlogic621 I like rubber one piece. Once torqued down it is good. I was surprised on how much torque it took on the 1/2 inch corner bolts (18 ft pounds) but it all worked out great. Seems like a lot of torque to me but all is good.
@musclefactory80444 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I did what you did but after loosening the idler arm fully, the tie rod would not disconnect from it. Not even by using a hammer or a steel bar... Did you have similar problems? Any advices to get them to disconnect from eachother? I liek your videos but you rarely mention torque values, they are easy to lookup. Also, does the steering need new geometry or alignment after this fix? Thanks
@TheWhatisright4 жыл бұрын
They do make a special tool to remove the rod ends. If you have not removed the tie rid in a long time it can get difficult. For those tie rods that have an opposite end it may help to loosen the other end. I did not need a realignment because I did not change/replace the tie rods. Of course, nothing wrong with checking the alignment afterwards. Most tie rods can only be tightened so much because of the cotter pin that needs to be installed. Thank you for the comment Corvette friends.

I have a leak from lower gasket on timing case cover. Will changing oil pan gasket fix leak?
@TheWhatisright3 жыл бұрын
Mostly likely it will. Not 100 percent sure because it could be leaking higher up and running down. However, I did have a leak in that location and the new pan gasket fixed the problem.
@dtruth57693 жыл бұрын
@@TheWhatisright Ya that's what I'm thinking. Cause the side of timing are dry. So I fig a oil pan mite be easier than pulling front of motor off again. And cheaper if I have it done

Can do the next time I have the pan off. I do not have a video on that at this time. Hop
@aboutmyfathersbusiness83243 жыл бұрын
Yes you can remove and replace the pump. Mine had lots of miles. I replaced it and oil pressure went right back up. Also replaced the pump rod to distributor with a one piece unit. More reliable. You can also replace the rear main seal while you are in there. Remove the rear main bearing half shell and slide the new seal in. They are half seals.
