Good job .. thank you for explaining as you go along for those who are in the process of changing out their transmission its helpful to know every detail so there won't be any surprises! . You make this look easy. I'm in the market for a c5 but automatic. I'm doing a lot of research on the C5 before I buy and it looks like the c5 transmission would be easier to remove than the C4 .. thanks again.... Ps a 2020 86000 on the clock for around $15,000 Good deal? I won't buy one with less than 60,000 miles on it, if it was going to break it should have already broken and the bill goes to owner before me 😏

Good thought process for the C5 purchase. I assume you meant 2002 and not 2020 for 15K, that would have been sold before it was advertised😁. At a $15K ask, I think you have some negotiating room there, especially if the car is anything less than perfect or needs some deferred maintenance. I need to pull my trans this weekend to repair. I am leaving the torque tube in place and removing the rear suspension, then diff, then trans. The car only has 25k miles but I hurt the third gear slider keys or blocker at a 1/2 mile event so I just need to fix that. Do I need to remove the H pipe to pull the trans?

You will need to pull the H pipe so you can remove the transmission tunnel support plate. When dropping the rear suspension the torque tube needs to have room to angle down in the back as the rear suspension comes down. It takes a little more time but will make your life much easier and keep you from accidentally damaging the firewall.

@@VetteSource I had guys tell me to leave the plate and leave the torque tube alone so that I DONT damage the firewall or the wiring. Remove the rear cradle, pull the diff, pull the trans- that's what they said.

I've seen people do it that way, but the problem sometimes is clearing the suspension mount bolts that stick out of the frame. Removing the h pipe and tunnel support just allows you to let the torque tube come down a bit to give you better access to the torque tube to transmission bolts. You also have a little wiggle room with the firewall as long as you don't get the torque tube past a certain angle. There is actually a sticker on the tube that shows you the limit angle.

@@VetteSource Ok sweet. I will get started and just see what I have to do. First time pulling a C5 trans for me. Unused to R&R and rebuild T5s for Mustangs so I think I'll be good to go thru this T56 and fix third gear.

Hey James, that is the recommended procedure per the service manual. The biggest reason is to keep from damaging the torque tube or firewall.

Hey man. Can you help me with a tachometer. Wondering if you know which wires go where. I have a bare pigtail with the white and pink wires bare. I think I've got figured the white wire goes to tach where would the pink go?

The LT-4 camshaft is a but more aggressive than the LT-1 but not enough to make a large difference by itself. For extra power, I would suggest the LT-4 hot cam. I think it was/is made by Comp Cams, and with a set of aftermarket heads will give quite a bit more power along with that lumpy idle. Also the sensor should pull straight out from the duct, just make sure it hasn't been glued into place considering all the mods the previous owners performed on your car.

This gives me alot of hope..my car is immobile rn bcz im sure i broke my diff so i bought a new one.. n i have a newer zo6 manual transmission i also have a monster clutch i want to install with a newer n thicker rear main plate n seal (c5s r notorious for havin problems w their rear main plates n leak oil) man i would so pay u to help me do all this..Hopefully u aint far away..im in Illinois..but if not i guess ill do my best to do it my self at least change my diff n transmission so i can finally drive my car ..i been sad for along time.. can u pls explain how did u remove ur drive axles..i just dont wanna break anything 😔 ..help lol 😇

Glad I was able to help. Sorry, I'm in Houston so not very close, but i can walk you through the process. The drive axles aren't that bad. Once you remove the axle retaining nut from the spindle, there will be room to separate the lower control arm ball joint so that you can pull the spindle out of the way and slide the axle out. I seen when u separated the two the shaft was dry..thanks man i appreciate the help..u still got that Vette? I might need some parts if u have it i dont coming to tx either for them..i been around that area b4 tx is awesome n low gas..anyways take care

Metric, there's not really any standard size fasteners used on them anymore except in a few places.

That's where I would start looking first. Visually check for leakage of rear differential fluid, and if you have the proper facilities put the car on a lift and listen while it's stationary and in gear to sed.if you can isolate where the noise is coming from.
