Take another sports car of the era that is pretty equivalent as far as condition and performance, but has a quality interior. How much would that cost today (plus ongoing maintenance costs) compared to this Z06? Different car, but one I'm more familiar with- 2.5 years ago I bought a 1993 base Corvette for $8000; 67000 miles and very good condition inside and out. Another car from the era that I really like is the Porsche 928 GTS; the 1993 version did 0-60 in 5.4s -- the base Corvette was a couple of tenths slower, but in the same ballpark. So, can I get a 928 GTS in similar condition to my Corvette for similar money? Not even close. Looking at like $20k+ easily and god forbid anything goes wrong with it! Is the interior nicer? Without a doubt, but it isn't $12k+ nicer and it wasn't $40-50k nicer in 1993.

Never really thought of that, the corvettes interior I always thought was cheap, but I’m trying to think of other cars from that period, the Supra was done, the Porsche, AMGs and Ms from that time period are not going to be as reliable as the vette which actually is one of the more reliable chevys.

The C6 kind of follows the trend, and the 500+ hp on that one makes up for any of the downs.
@jeremydewitte98232 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the C5 isn’t really horrible considering the time and the price, and I didn’t buy my vettes for that (even though they could be better). I bought them for how they drive, the style, and the experience. It is amazing however that GM was able to totally redesign the whole car on the C8’s to mid-engine AND have the interior totally upgraded for the price they are. Incredible how the 2020’s were only $2,000 (approximately) higher on the base price than an based price automatic from 2019 AND have a dual clutch transmission.
@jeremydewitte98232 жыл бұрын
Also, on anyone complaining about problems on them, you can go spend half a million on a Lamborghini and still have issues. If Lambos, Ferraris, and Mclarens didn’t have issues, they wouldn’t hire mechanics at their dealerships. There’s a reason why Corvette has such a great fan base.

Some notes for the Z06 C5: -The non-Z06 hardtop you reference several times in the video was actually the precursor to the Z06 and is known to many as the FRC (Fixed-Roof Coupe). It was sold for the 1999 and 2000 MY, and was replaced by the Z06 in 2001. -When you are looking under the hood, only the Z06's LS6 engine had the red plastic "valve cover, covers." All other C5 Corvettes had black covers with red lettering on the LS1. -The C5 was the one of the first cars with run flats, and the first with a TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) to prevent driving on a flat and allow elimination of a spare. The Z06 swapped this for grippier non-runflats, and a can of fix-a-flat and an inflator. -The head-up (not headS-up, although I say it this way too sometimes) display in the C5 Corvette was definitely one of the most advanced for its time in any vehicle. The first one ever, was used in the 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme and then the Pontiac Grad Prix. I had one on my 1992 Pontiac Bonneville. Although they are very handy for keeping your eyes on the road, they were mostly panned as being gimmicks at the time--until BMW and other luxury brands started to offer them a decade and a half later. -I have the same stereo in my 2002 S10 pickup truck. It also has a crack through all 4 of the small levels dials. And just like this one, it has "SCV" or Speed-Controlled Volume around the volume knob. You can control how aggressively the volume ramps up with speed (to compensate for ambient engine, road, and wind noise) by moving the outer ring through "off" and 3 levels of boost. -This definitely was one of the low points of GM interior design. It is interesting how GM got here. They actually had some classier designs in the '70s and '80s. They weren't luxurious or high-tech by modern standards, but were generally competitive. They were very linear, and modular HVAC and stereo units had rectangular holes which they slid into--but they fit flush. In the '90s, as everything went organic, GM got very self conscious about these rectangles, and tried to hide them behind plastic trim which sat ON TOP of the rectangular faces, making the borders more rounded. Unfortunately, since this trim sat on top, nothing could sit flush this way. If it did, it would surely rattle. IMO, the ugliest part is the melty looking vent at the top of the center stack. One facet that is easy to miss by looking at pictures, is that the dashboards of this era were cast from self-skinning foam, or foam wrapped in a vinyl covering. While the shapes are generally not pleasing, they are a kind of soft touch before the 2000's, when everything went to hard plastic. The plastic has crisper edges and tighter gaps, but feels even cheaper than cars like the C5.

First AMERICAN car with TPMS. The first car to have TPMS was the Porsche 959, all the way back in 1986.
@eb110americana5 жыл бұрын
@@andlat91 Okay, first PRODUCTION car. The 959 was a hand-built homologation supercar with hollow spoke wheels that shared its pressurized tire air inside the spokes to reach the pressure sensors. I think they did this to monitor not just flat tires, but in case of wheel cracking while racing, a leak would show up before disaster struck. The 959 also had run flat tires, but they were proprietary for that car only, and regular tires cannot be mounted in their place. The Corvette's system is closer to modern run-flats, except that the TPMS sensor is strapped around the drop center of the wheel, 100% inside the tire. Modern systems (even non-runflat) are all behind the valve stem. The modern system is better, as the Corvette one was more vulnerable when dismounting tires, if you didn't see it inside there.
@andlat915 жыл бұрын
@@eb110americana oh, absolutely. The Corvette system was a first in its own way and definitely innovative. The craziest thing is that usually innovative tech like that comes out in low production, high cost models (like the 959, Mercedes S Class, etc). Seeing it come out in an affordable vehicle like the Vette is crazy!

Nissan also had a HUD on the 1989 240SX. Not sure if other cars in Japan in the 80's had that feature, but my US model did. Was quite the revelation to discover that, and think, "wait... this car predates the C5 by quite a few years!" I had no idea Olds / Pontiac were doing that too, that's cool.

I enjoyed the review, brought back memories...I went from a C4 '96 to a '04 Z06 with the Z16 package with the CF hood, and I was amazed at the time at the fit and finish and overall quality improvement between the C4 to C5, it was dramatic. That said... In the late '90s there was a strong pressure on GM by enthusiasts for GM to build a simple, affordable, stripped-down Corvette for the masses to enjoy. The FRC was the result, and like the Z06, it was all about simplicity, affordability, handling performance and of course lightness. Heck, I recall pundits were even demanding that this "Billy Bob" version should have no comfort options, and be totally option-deleted down to manual door locks and crank windows. The Z06 was sort of the end-result, it had no option for remote CD changer, no power seats, no spare, even the glass was thinner for lightness, and the seats felt like they weighed nothing. It was supposed to be affordable, light, and simple, and perform very well, because that is what the market demanded at the time. It is ironic that Doug, like many contemporary reviewers, are now pointing out the deficiencies about the cheapness of the interior, etc, when in fact this was a genuine response by GM to give the people what they demanded at the time, using typical GM parts that were available in the late 90's. Back then I did not think that the C5 was any worse than many of the other late-90's era cars for fit and finish and interior quality, in fact it was probably much better than it's contemporaries.
@rickhunter65135 жыл бұрын

Thanks, Doug. About a year ago, I watched this video and bought my C5 the next morning. Fortunately, last year in Philly we had ZERO inches of snow. Thinking of All Season Radials, and driving it all year long. Probably one of the only cars you've reviewed that I can actually afford...

Hi, I will be in Philly this year, do you know the value of a good c5z on market right now? And is the insurance expensive? I’m worried since I’m only 26.

Doug, a really cool quirk/feature you didn't touch on is that you can read the check engine light straight from the DIC (Driver information center)

to answer your question about the Trunk Release plastic, models with fog lights have both buttons in that panel so it doesn't look so empty

The plastic around the trunk button are where the optional fog lights button would be. That's why it's so big

Hey Doug, one correction and one quirk you missed. The C5 Z06 is actually a full 130 lbs lighter than the standard C5 Hatchback. I know this because after owning a C5 Hatchback I wanted to understand why the price of the C5 Z06 was a premium over the Hatchback and that is one BIG reason along with the added power. You can REALLY feel the 130 lb reduction in weight when driving it compared to the Hatchback. One way they got to that number was a quirk you missed. They removed all the sound deadening in the Z06 which is why it is so much LOUDER than the C5 Hatchback from the inside. Plus the titanium exhaust which includes wider pipes definitely changes the sound. Another weight reduction measure you failed to mention were the wheels. The Z06 wheels are specific to the Z06 and are lighter than the standard wheels that were available on the C5 Hatchback.

I think he just means the exhaust itself saved 18 lbs., not as a whole. Cool fact tho!

Doug failed to mention one of the Z06's main quirks/features, the two large blisters on the roof were for extra head clearance when the occupants wore helmets at the track. BTW, these things would produce 425 rwhp with just a few weekend mods and cpu tuning.
