Just out of High School I lost a girlfriend over my C-3. One of her complaints was that I spent more time and money on the car. As she walked out the door, I had all freshly chromed parts spread out on my fire place seating area, she picked up my brand new "Stingray" emblems and broke them between the Sting and Ray. I still have a broken "Sting" 40+ years later. I had to accept that she was right.

Yes I read “All corvettes are red” before I bought my 99 Hardtop last year. Awesome book, GM almost killed off the Corvette due to lack of funds. This is how I feel. IMO the C5Z is easily the best 'Drivers" Corvette ever made. Each year they got more refined and lose just a little bit of the rawness that the C5Z has in its DNA. Two of my buddies have C6Z's and when they drive my C5Z they always tell me, "Man, that car just hits different". I know stock a C6Z is a bit faster but its not always about that.
@MemphisStreetOutlawsPAWPAWАй бұрын
Having owned most of the corvettes made,my assertion is it is the best one ever built. They are literally hard as iron. The interior in my 2001 Z06 was heavily panned but at 140k miles it still looks and smells new with minor wear on the drivers seat. No corvette made before that would look like this after 25k miles. They really got the C5 right.

I bought my C6 about 12 years ago and currently have 135k on it here in the northeast. I also have 2 other cars, but the C6 is my daily for the most part and has been extremely reliable. sweet spot is right. As a C5 owner, I could listen to this stuff all day long. As a guy who came of age driving English sports cars, I was looking at the platform , would I be happy putting money long term into the design, and of course, it had to fit my body comfortably. I was taken aback to discover the car was built primarily for american style fun, with the added benefit that GM knows the american consumer tends to abuse machines, so a good owner will have a regular yank tank.. A major enjoyment for me is that the top goes down flush with no sight obstructions. I find this openness, besides the obvious benefits, has the unexpected advantage of drawing friendly interactions with pedestrians and other drivers , something that doesn't happen surround by bodywork or wearing a helmet. the stock design is more than sufficient for my needs, with the benefit of less stewardship and money required.

Great video Lyle. yes, I love the lines of my 2003 Z06 and it has just enough of a nose lower rake with the body lines flowing upwards as if flows to the back. Giving me what we did in the 60's and 70's Hot Rod Muscle Car look. The interior is perfect for me and the HUD is marvelous. I don't need all the new screens, push button start etc. etc. stuff with my car. I do have Blue Tooth installed and a garage door opener (button) but they are hidden in the ashtray in front of the shifter. Speaking of shifter it may not be my old school muscle car 4 speed but do I love to run thru the 6 gears I have now. What my wife loves about our 2nd C5 is that she can actually get into it so mucher easier than any of my 2 C4's or 2 C3's. And it's more comfortable to her. She is also glad the seats are tall enough to catch her head when I give it a little gas. lol. My Corvettes, all of them that I have owned have been daily driver's. Yes, rain, snow but not too much as I draw the line on anything above 1-2 inches, bottom feeder. Being from San Francisco and now in Portland, Oregon I drive in any weather and long or short trips. Oh, lastly how cool is it that we see our dash light up with a Black Light? I totally agree with you on why we love our C5's. I say- Drive. Smile. wave. It's a beautiful day to drive your Vette.

An excellent video! I’ve owned my 2001 C5 roadster for 20 years, and driving it never fails to make me smile. Oh, you’ll cry when it is time to change the tires, but if you’re not tracking the car, or drifting around corners, and are not a fan of side-stepping the clutch at 3000 rpm (not that there is anything wrong with any of these, if you like to do these), the tires will last a surprisingly long time. I live in the frozen Northeast and have to store the car for 6 months a year. I put a trickle charger on it, and as Lyle says, when April or May rolls around, I get in the car, turn the key, and drive off. Just a great cruiser. A superb and fun car. Yup I agree, though I have never owned one, but I've been doing track day road course events for many years, and the C5 and C6 are the best production based cars you can buy for road racing, and by far the most popular, first they are bullet proof, second with a little work they are as fast on a road course as anything you can buy today. I bought a wrecked 93 Camaro from a junkyard and built a track car, I won't go too much into that because this is about the incredible Corvette, just to say I went back to the gen ll LT1 I feel it is a better engine for road racing, and I have put 200 thousand miles on this car on race tracks only, with 600 plus HP engines, and the chassis is as solid as the day it was built, these gen 4 Camaro's like em or not were very well built, and it is faster than the Vettes, but also far from stock.

Thanks Lyle, you make a lot of excellent points, c5 and c6 are my two favorites. I like various aspects of all the generations, but only having the ability to own one Corvette at a time, these make the most sense for the reasons you mentioned. My car is a c6 base (2008).

I've been enjoying my 02 for years now, I bought it for cheap, with high miles. It runs great, and is reliable, solid car. Yeah, good video. I like vehicles that require a physical key that gets inserted and turn it. Not a fan of buttons.

The C5 has the bones of the C6-7 but not as much of the computer and electronics. The C5 also incorporates old styling cues with a modern engine and chassis. The LS engine. It is easy to work on. There are a ton of them and many in good low mile condition. Many afgordable parts The best thing about the C5 is we have a guy named Lyle that shows us how to fix things!

Thanks for doing this. Have you ever compared the 5 to the 6. I personally like the 6 better but not the headlights. Thanks for keeping us informed

I've had a C4, C6, C7, and C8 (still have the C6 & C8), but somehow missed the C5. I've always had the idea of picking up a C5 FRC to build into an autocross car for some weekend fun with the local clubs here.
@richknudsen5781Ай бұрын
OK, I'll ad my two cents since I own four of them, a 98, two 99's and an 01. Electrically they can be a pain in the ass. But the engine is solid, the transmissions work great, they handle awesome even stock and most of all it's the best looking Corvette to come out of the design studio since the 57 C1. All the rest of the things are common with any car.

Nailed it! I need a Z06 FRC now! this was great. I learned a lot as well about the C5 compared to my C4 ZR1. love that

I knew you were big but I didn't know you're pushing 7 feet! I'm 6'8" and find myself bonking my head at times in my '04. I don't understand how you can fit at all. You're also a lot broader than I am.

Respect to the C5 tribe. I'm team C4. 96 LT4 coupe in Polo Green. ✊🏽 But I'd love that stiffer frame and easier egress. My only hangup is that I don't like the look of the FRC/Z06. I much prefer the lines of the coupe. So the top C5 just doesn't appeal to my eye.
@scoutdogfsrАй бұрын
@@Gotmath8 I love the open hood and incredible engine bay access of the c4. My step dad bought one new in 86 and we tracked that car hard at every autocross event we could find. We pissed off countless Porche owners in the process. Especially that a 19yr old was smoking them in an American car.
@herkloader34Ай бұрын
I'm with ya, man. I have a '91 ZR1 and still to this day, the LT5 stands on its own. The styling of the C5 never grabbed me. It's a pussified version of Corvette to make the old folks happy with owning a Corvette. The later C4s were more genuine in-your-face race cars, but lacked the high end horsepower due to the ridiculous EPA requirements of the day. And that cheap interior? Yes, worse than well kept C4s. Tupperware, shit quality. The LS engines are the only big thing that made C5s a big hit. If it weren't for those, it would've gone the way of the Cavaliers. Back to C4s, that clamshell hood was a hit back then and a hit today at carshows all over. I've had many people tell me that all generations of Corvettes after the C4 should've had that same type of hood. As far as the car, it's harder to get into and out of, but that high frame actually protects the occupants better in a side collision and keeps the CG lower, like a race car. C5s are good cars.....if you want to be boring. My next Vette (while keeping my ZR1) that I add to the stable will be at least a C6 GS or ZR1. No interest in the Z06 and dealing with the possible LS7 hand grenade valve issue.

About 8 years ago I sold my 04 Lemans Zo6 (one of the 2025} because I wanted a convertable, I bought a yellow 02 convertable instead liveing here in Fl, no regrets but I should have kept the Zo6 as well. When the garage door is open and the rear end is on view, I get lots of guys knocking on my door to see if it is for sale. I tell them no, im 81 and will get buried in it.

I will always remember seeing the rear of a C5 drive by when I was in college. 😊😮😊 I was sold from that point on. I agree Lyle. The C5 is the classic never get old Corvette. What I love most is as follows. The curved shape, wide stance, and pop up headlights. ❤ The performance??? Who doesn’t enjoy a V8 in a lightweight car? These cars are effortless to drive and give them effort for a 😊. Last item for me is the comfort. My mother loves it and calls it her Cadillac. I’d daily drive my Corvette and maybe one day I will. 😅 Dislikes??? Okay the interior needs some updating? That’ll be taken care of as time progresses. 🎉😂🎉

I have a 2002 convertible and I really like this car. I had a 1996 Collectors Edition Coupe 6-pd, which was a really, really nice car. The C5 is as Lyle says - reliable and so much more! I have an electrical problem with the door locks, not a really big deal; power door locks in a 2-door? I should have the problem fixed. Lyle - do know a good shop in the Chicagoland area?

Bought a red 2005 C-6 base/6-speed/convertible for my wife as I was a bit gunshy of the hidden headlights. As an owner of a 1986 Pontiac T/A bought new, I have a love/hate relationship with the hidden headlights. However, my 1966 C-2 does have hidden headlights that seem to work well year after year. I do think the C-5 is a very clean looking car that just "flows"...

Great video, i agree with all of your reasons. Love my 99 Hardtop which i bought last year in April and you helped greatly with all of your email responses. Need to get rid of these runflats that the previous owner put on, will do it next spring/summer, for now i turn up the music! they're super loud especially on concrete roadways. only major complaint is in the interior: the base seats in the Hardtop are shit to put it bluntly. ZERO lateral support. With only about 24k miles on it, she's barely broken in. Saving up for a C7 Z51 2LT with mag ride. I’ll have this C5 paid off in 3 years then time to make a move into a C7. No disrespect to the C5 community but the C7 is the ultimate front engine RWD Vette.
