another presentation singularly outstanding in the category, congratulations on the high quality instructional work. I suspect a lot of people overlook the harmonic part of the balancer name, and expect to replace it as one would with most parts, if it matches the looks and fitment of the old part, it is correct, overlooking that it is tuned to quell destructive vibrations only on a stock engine. Harmonic vibrations are the reason solders walk and don't march across bridges. perhaps you have seen automobile bridges fail when wind caused normal vibrations to stack up in harmony, destroying a suspension bridge designed before such effects were designed against. You start running consistently outside of what expected use GM tuned the balancer for, or, more commonly, install aftermarket parts that move the engine vibrational frequency outside of the original destructive frequencies dampened by the stock part , and you can expect parts to break, with the balancer going first, since it is designed to get vibrated in oppositional sympathy with the engine, and it no longer does. with a damper tuned to the incorrect frequency, probably the main bearings will fail first, if the damper doesn't self destruct. Very much like spark plugs, where if you start changing things around, you might need a new part that looks the same, but functions differently. only people don't fault the original specified spark plugs like they do with a damper that self destructs because it is now seeing conditions it was not designed for. these dampers are not one size fits all. Although they look the same, they are tuned to dampen specific frequency ranges, which are stamped on the part.. I suspect a lot of people finding fault with the stock balancer are just following the lead of other people who also didn't understand that fitting this part requires an understanding of the specific destructive harmonic vibrations of the application, which are implied as correct only with a stock part controlling stock vibrations. I have read posts where extensive engine work was done, and the new damper was selected essentially by looks, picked only because it had an extra groove, in case they wanted to install a wider belt to run a supercharger later on.

Think about this for a minute. A lot of folks when upgrading their clutch switch to a lightweight flywheel. How much harder do you think that makes the harmonic balancer work! Someone out there (not me) could probably use math to come up with the answer. I will just go with "significantly"! Happy 4th!

Definitely a helpful series of videos, as I would imagine that just about every C5 owner is going to experience this issue at some point. I still have some inspecting to do under hood, but the chirping sound is very similar to what I've heard on various videos via KZbin, and there is a slight wobble to the damper, which I've heard is normal, but I'm not taking any risks here. The car only has 49k or so miles, but it's still 25 years old. I plan on driving this car a lot and for many years to come, so I want to know that I can jump in and drive across the country if I want to and it will be unlikely that I have any problems. I know that this car is extremely reliable and the few issues they do have aren't particularly major- as long as you don't let them get to the point where they can do serious damage.

Thank you for a superb video, absolutely 2 thumbs up. I just finished installing my harmonic balancer. Just a few things that I found helpful… I used a 3 foot extension on my breaker bar but could not budge the crankshaft bolt, I heated the bolt with a butane torch for 3 minutes (I timed it) and the bolt moved without effort. When installing the fan shroud, it helped to tie off the hose on the driver’s side to the frame. It made just enough extra room. - Alley Oop

I haven't checked my balancer yet but plan to sometime next year when I retire. I don't want to devote down time for fixing my 03. I plan to use your video to change it out if I need one. Right now I'm guessing I have the stock balancer on it. I do have a two post lift so no problem there. However, the one change I would make is I would use anti-seize instead of oil as I use this on my lug nuts every time I swap out brake pads which is frequent since I run on the road course. Also, pull the rotor off and coat the inside of the rotor with anti-seize because that rotor will seize up, too. And it's a PITA when the rotor is seized up and your trying to install new rotors. Excellent video and keep up the good tech info as 23K subscribers follow you for a reason. T

The outer metal ring is bonded to the inner hub with rubber, when that rubber bond fails the outer ring starts to wobble as it slips.

After one failed balancer ....putting a stock new one back on would be kinda lunacy....personally a fluidampner is a great choice ! When I removed my balancer ...to clean the crank threads I used a tap from Balax...they make the best taps in the business and it works great in making sure those threads are ready for the ARP bolt I also would have sent the rack out to Turn One for a reseal....hate doing a job twice once you find PS fluid leaking a month later...
@Toys4Life2 жыл бұрын
Agree that using a GM balancer is not a good idea. Power bonds have a fabulous reputation, even under the duress of supercharging. Power steering has a minor leak. Discuss with the owner and he decided to keep the stock one in there. Sometimes new isn't always better, and my 30 years of wrenching I've seen plenty of brand new parts fail, so it's not a high percentage but it happens.

I am a 44 year certified tech. In my experience a harmonic balancer is balanced to the engine using weights so as to minimize engine vibration due to imbalance. This is why a keyway and woodruff key are used to position the pulley and so it cannot move on the crankshaft. So I surmise that this isn't really a balancer I am installing on this 'Vette but just a pulley..
@Toys4Life5 ай бұрын
@denniscolligan6541 You should have led with that, I would have gave you more information. correct more accurately it is a vibration dampener not a balancer although there was a hot balance procedure done to some manual transmission cars to bring them to a finer state of balance due to the tenancy of the shafts inside the torque tube to cause a resonance that was objectionable to some. The more material weights would have been added to points on the flywheel if hot balancing was needed in that scenario. There were some smaller weights at times added to the balancer as well which I guess technically would make it externally balanced but that confuses the hell out of people

Hey @toys4life c5. Love the videos by the way. Going to be doing a BTR stage 3 cam and getting some Texas speed long tubes. I'm guessing that you would recommend hitting my harmonic balancer while I've got it that pulled apart yeah?

If you're not sure of if and when your harmonic balancer was replaced then yes. If it was replaced with an ACDelco one, then I would as well. Sounds like some fun mods, love the sound of a cammed C5 with headers!

@@Toys4Life I am 99% sure it's stock. Car has 70k miles on it and before I got it wasn't driven in about 5 years. Ive replaced all of the belts and pulleys otherwise including the water pump and ac compressor, but the alternator and HB are stock. I figured I probably should hit it while I have the car that much apart anyways.

I would like you to install my balancer because I believe it is done correctly

I appreciate that, if you're in Minnesota maybe we could work a deal?

such a pain in the ass! how many hours did this take?

I don't know - tons of added time to do the video part. Plus, since I have a day job - I always do these things 2-3 hours at a crack and at my own pace ...

Do you know of any Corvette mechanics in northern MN?
@Toys4Life11 ай бұрын
Sorry, I do not. You could go on the Corvette forum and ask the question, somebody lives up there and somebody knows??

Wish I had this vid 2 years ago... Paid 1000 bucks for the gm dealership to replace mine with another shitty gm balancer...
@Toys4Life3 жыл бұрын
Yikes... 1,000 bucks isn't horrible, but putting on a factory balancer that isn't the most known for reliability is.
@sjcea05122 жыл бұрын
Why in the world did you replace that pulley with the stock factory unit? You're going to go through all that work and only put back on a piece of garbage harmonic balancer that's going to give the same problem down the road
@Toys4Life2 жыл бұрын
Where in the world did you get the idea that I used a GM replacement harmonic balancer.
