Man I'd buy you a beer if I could,, was about to pull my hair out and finally came across this video...all I can say is thank you very much...was about to melt down trying to install these springs.👏🙌

Glad it helped. I couldn't find any videos when I tackled the job. Several gray hairs later I came up with this idea.

Your idea of a string was inspirational. Instead of tying the spring to the shoe I installed the spring in its operating position, looped the string around the spring and straddled the hub and secred it to a stud. That kept the spring in place as I slid the shoes over the spring and mounted it to the piston assembly. Real easy.

Hey thanks for doing the video Don. After futzing around with that rear brake shoe for a good while, the string trick had it back on there in no time after watching your video. Much appreciated!

Thank you, Don. I just did this job on my 99 Convertible over Labor Day Weekend. I watched your video first, and that spring went into place in just a couple of minutes on each side. Your tip works great on the C5, too. The hardest part of this job was getting the 21mm bolts off the caliper brackets with 21 year old GM red thread lock in there. My adjustable breaker bar only adjusts down to 15", so I had about a half inch of clearance. I really appreciate your time to make a video and post it. It was a great help. D

Don, thank you, I just ended a frustrating day, the adjuster is in two parts, they were frozen together, I got them apart and lubed, onto the springs. Without your video, I might have run out of cusswords toward the end of the week, which would be tough, I am a former sailor, thanks again.

Thank you for this video Don. I will be replacing my parking brake on my '01 Convertible this week once the weather cools down. I saw in another video you can use a zip tie to hold the spring in place as well and cut it off once complete. Thanks again Don!

Don just found this video. It was a lifesaver. Worked great, I still had a little trouble but was able to do it. A couple of things I found that was important for me. The way you tied the spring to one side was important to make it work, also the adjusters on my car turn in opposite direction to adjust. Thanks again for the video.

Thanx for the great video. After seeing this I'll probably pull the wheel hub off and see how that works. Almost like GM doesn't want us in there tinkering around! Thanx again.

I use a flathead screwdriver that I used a dremel to modify to have a half moon shape (to easily push the spring through the gap in the shoe and hub, and set it under the tabs)

I had to pull my rotor off to replace it on my 06 Cadillac. I ended up pulling off the parking brake shoe and that d#%n spring I fought with it for an hour and a half and ended up getting it to stay in with a screwdriver and a lot of frustration. My hat is off to you sir 👍🏽👍🏽

Got an add for you. I just had to deal with mine on my 98 C5 and here’s what I did. I adjusted the shoe wide open being able to install the clip. Once the clip was installed, i found the best tool to use is a saber saw blade with the teeth ground off to make it narrow enough to push on the wire retainer. The end has a grove that makes it a lot easier to push on the clip to get it into the retainer. Thought i would pass this on. Made it a lot easier.

the best way is to put the spring in place and bend the tabs over it and then put the brakes on works for me
@jpd4sho506 Жыл бұрын
I just did this 2 days ago and watching this video definitely gave me a heads up on what to expect. I did it a little different but it worked like a charm. I used some solid 24 GA galvanized wire and secured the spring in place before even putting the shoe on. There is a hole because of the tab in the backing plate so I routed the wire through there and wound it tight to secure the spring in place for both tabs. Once the spring was in place then I routed the shoe over it. This left me plenty of working room to pry the ends of the springs inside the shoe. Once all is in place then cut or unwind the wire and slide it out. 10 minutes, tops

I'm having the same hell with my C6 parking brake replacement . I'm eager to try your tip. Update: This method works great. I Used 2 zip ties, one for each lining hole to secure spring inside shoe. Also used very thin needle nose pliers to place spring on spring perch. Open end ignition wrench also works since it thin and wrench open end forks keeps spring wire from slipping out.
