The awesome part about this game is that the newspaper article is accurate. It tells you how many choppers were lost, how damaged the carrier was, if it got sunk, etc. It even counts as a win if you crash your final chopper onto the final factor and destroy it. and the newspaper will note that as well.

Had this on the old commodore 64. Took about 25 mins to load, but when it did.... well back in 1987 it was awesome. never beat it but spent many days scrambling through my homework so that I could play this.

With a Speeddos+ bios it takes less time :D

If you just said fuck it to the homework you would have beat this game... or get good enough that you could decimate everything and bomb the battle ship before it's completion but not destroy it let it rebuild again rinse and repeat. Loved hanging around runways killing pesky jets.

I never bombed while stationary, always did a circle near the factories and dropped the bomb while over it. Too worried about getting killed by those damned heat seekers.
@Andros27094 ай бұрын
You can do it relatively safely on the first two factories, after which the circling strategy becomes advised.

I remember stumbling into reloading bombs at the enemy airfields, and feeling like I'd discovered an amazing secret. If you weren't damaged, it was worth it and saved a ton of time. I would take any spare bombs left over from a run and bomb the battleship to slow its construction, though. That thing was mean when completed.

This still holds up pretty well decades later as a neat little helicopter strategy game. I enjoyed playing this game quite frequently in the late 80's.

We used to play this game while playing the Airwolf theme music in the background, since the game had no background music of its own. When the missiles would chase us, we'd let off a bomb to blow up the pursuing missile, like it was a sunburst. Pretty fun game from Broderbund.

If that airport uses some kind of automatic bomb reload mechanism....that may explain it (and the other airport does things old school, so no way you can land there!)

Once having been shot to >100% damage, it is possible to crash your heli into a factory to damage/destroy it. It is possible to simultaneously lose your last life and beat the game this way. You'd get a newspaper but no parade.

So Will Wright made this game. Some years later, he would go on to make SimCity. Notice how the buildings in this game are seen from above. I think it gave him some ideas...

I'd love to see a modern version of this. Nothing too extravagant, throw in some more strategic-management. Destroying the enemy radar and comm-infrastructure will make enemy response more sluggish. You can fly low to avoid enemy aircraft, but then you're in danger of infantry small-arms. Repairing/rearming your chopper takes some in-game time, so you have to switch choppers. If your carrier gets attacked, your inactive choppers will scramble. So it's in your best interest to keep your chopper fleet in full repair, and time your attacks on the enemy factories. Bonus objectives: you can airlift Marines to capture enemy munitions depots. That will allow you to resupply in the field, but they won't be able to hold those positions for long! Be prepared to air-evac them out. And lastly, you have option to destroy civilian targets. The Bungeling Empire has no qualms about housing civilians near their war-factories. Attacking will slow overall enemy response and Battleship-construction. But that constitutes a war crime. Do so only if you're desperate, or you're just a really bad guy.
@visioneerone13 жыл бұрын
I don't think I ever beat this. Didn't realize you could land and rearm at teh airfields !! Sinking the battleship was fun, though :)
@drrobert75434 жыл бұрын
Did the enemy’s tactics advance over time, or as you destroyed factories? E.g. progression to enemy fighters, bombers attacking your carrier, guided missiles? And the first couple factories took less than a full bomb load, but the later ones took at least one refill. The one thing I remember was strictly a matter of time was the enemy battleship, and I usually would bomb that while under construction.
@michaelcatlett89799 жыл бұрын
somehow I remember the ending as slightly more epic. It was a struggle to beat if I remember so perhaps it was more just the emotional triumph at the time to finally have beaten the darn thing.
