Why do you think a flat plane crank that's designed for a race application. Would make less hp and be weaker? That crank should handle 1000hp+ without a problem. Ford's 5.2L GT350 has had them since 2013 if I remember correctly. There's a few making 1100whp+ with boost on an otherwise stock motor. I will say personally. I think the cross plane does sound better. Chevy wouldn't have a problem making a reliable 800hp+ with a flat plane if that's what they wanted. I'd love to know where you got this idea a flat plane crank make less hp and wouldn't handle much more than 600hp. That's just not the case. Now they do make little less torque. Although when used in the right application. The trade off is worth it. You get better exhaust scavenging, faster higher revving engine. Plus it's a lighter smaller engine with a lower center of gravity. The C8 zo6 is definitely the right application.

All these exotics going for $200k-$500k and Z06 starting at about $85k-90k and after some options I’m estimating about $105k-$115k maybe pushing $120k fully optioned out for this Z06 GM is really changing the game and doing a great job.

If that orange picture is the Z06, man that looks so good. Those new intakes and rear lines set it off. And that wide front fender I hope makes it to production! Please make a GS, but don't make it cost 90% of what a Z06 does. That was some BS last time. Wow that is beautiful. I have the video paused right now just staring at it.

I honestly haven’t followed a lot of these developments, but the next Z06, being the “NA track weapon” that it is seems basically like a GS, so there wouldn’t be much room for one. I guess they could basically use the cheaper Stingray motor and do some of the same aero bits and call it a GS for like $75k... but yeah .. $60k to $75k and $90k is a pretty narrow gap especially when the GS and Z06 are going to be more more similar, it seems. I would’ve considered a C7 GS over the Z06 despite the narrow price gap bc I like to track my cars and could definitely push the GS harder with more confidence. I went with an SS1LE which is honestly still a lot of fun and quite quick. All I know is I’m very excited to see what they do with this Z06 bc it should line up perfectly with my next buying cycle.

In my opinion I think Z06 going to be 700+,. And the reason is because Cadillac is coming out with a black wing CT5 and CT6 and those are going to be 550- 650 horsepower, and I believe that they're saving the 1000 horsepower for the ZR1..

Coming from a Sport Bike perspective, I wonder if this new DOHC engine will use a balance shaft to quell vibration. Honda used two in their CBR-XX I-4 motorcycle engine to make that flat-crank HP engine smooth as glass. Who knows, maybe putting a balance shaft inside the V, where the camshaft resides in the pushrod engines, could do the job and be used to drive ancillaries? Or, they could just do a bang-up job of balancing the engine internals. Corvette does have their super engine-building shop that should be up to the task.

I sure hope the rumors of twin turbo with 800 HP for the C8 Z06 is true. My C7 Z06 already has 650HP so they better duel turbo it. I can’t see GM having less HP in the new ZO6. It wouldn’t make any sense to build the new Z06 with only 100 more HP than the base car.

Why? What do you think it would need? I would just do wheels, maybe tires, lower by 3-4cm(of course), exhaust and tuning. Then lots of time at Fontana(autoX) and Willow Springs track day and club events. Putting a compressor of any kind on this Z06 would be completely missing the point.

Matt M I hope they do that with the grand sport. I have had the chance to drive a Z06 on track but it was in Arizona. Maybe that is what the problem was. I personally prefer NA which is why, if true they give the same engine to the grand sport I’ll go with that model

The problem(s) with a high revving cost saver (a cheaper, smaller engine approach where HP costs are shifted to customer maintanence) is very low torque, just as I've predicticting from the start of this misguided effort. A 600+ HP/430 ft-lb car has to spin to create HP, and the only way for it to spin is to move, but it can't move with no torque. This will look like very low torque 911s, timed in the low 3s to 60 mph but slow to distance. A stop light race loser. It might do well on sweeping highspeed tracks where RPM stays high. But HP sells cars and Torque wins races because a high torque car leaps out in front, the low torque car can hit 60 sooner but it is still way behind. Another problem is lifecycle costs of a high vibration, high RPM engine which are exponential in exchange for linear HP gains. Thats makes perfect sense for a low-miles exotic, but the approach is not tennable for the Corvette demographic.

Sandy you’re missing the point. The Z06 is and always has been the track version of the Corvette, not a straight line brute. The ZR1 is the high HP high torque version. The transmission will be programmed to keep the engine in the sweet spot of the power band while going around the track. If you are so knowledgeable, maybe you should apply to GM for a job and show them how it’s done.

You don't understand it. It's not a "cost saver". And if flat plane crank engines are such a bad idea, why do you think race cars have been using that for decades? Why do you think GM switched to a flat plane crank - because they were at the end of what could be done with a cross plane crank, and to move _forward_ and continue to increase performance they had to do this. Same reason for switching to a midengine layout. The front engine layout was at a dead end. So sure, go ahead and tell the race engineers you know better than they do how to build a race car. Sorry, I'll listen to the race engineers before listening to you. This is basically the engine designed for and being run in the C8R. Also, because the engine spins at such high RPM, you use shorter gears that gives you the torque back. Not tenable? I will not buy any Corvette until it has a flat plane crank. For people wanting a track toy, this is _exactly_ what the "Corvette demographic" will want. Clearly, you are not the target demographic for this model. But _many_ people like me, we ARE the target demographic for this model. For you, they will sell you the Stingray.

I don't think they'll have too hard a time beating 600 horse. The voodoo makes 520 out of 5.2 liters. The voodoo has fairly heavy crank, no where near the lightweight Ferrari. Technology has improved to allow more power than what's been produced before. Look at the specific output of the 458 and then add a liter of displacement. There is also rumors of a dual intake like on a prancing pony. This helps make power, shaves off a few pounds, and sounds completely mental. Stay safe Chevy engineers... we need you more than ever.

I was just thinking recently that with GM not able to get the Stingrays out right now and the 2020 MY cut short, I bet the Z06 will be delayed to at least 2022, and it looks like that is indeed the case. Seeing this document give a starting price at 85K is exactly what I've been predicting for a long time now. So many were saying 90-95K or higher and I was like there is no way, just watch. Given how the C8 Stingray is priced vs the C7 and the price difference from base to Z06, I figured 85K would be about right. Personally I'm fine with it being pushed out a little longer since this gives me more time to save up for a larger down payment and more opportunities for pay increases to help pay for this beast. Something like this will look real good in the garage next to my red 2008 Z06. :) Also, I am super excited to see this have an engine that is like a Ferrari. I will probably never be able to have one and after riding and driving one belonging to a guy at work and being blown away by it, having a Corvette, something obtainable, that is basically the same thing is exciting to me. I'll watch videos of the Ferrari 458 (probably my favorite model) and just be like OMG and if the Z06 is just like that, then bring it on!

very likely if it is FPC NA it will be a major fail sure it will track great but it will stop there. revving that hi there will be crappy low end TQ, You will have to get to 3-5k rpm to get into the power band, so for most street driving it will suck compared to the C8 Z51, Street Speed 717 is already putting twin turbos on his C8 along with a bunch of others what to you think a car like that would do to the NA FPC other than destroy it. this sounds like you are reading Car and Driver again. Can pick this up at any news stand. Maybe you should take a look at /Corvette Forums they have some very interesting info there.

I believe flat plane crank engines (purely based off the Ford gt350) don't seem to have a lot of torque. I'll be interested to see how it comes out. But it really seems they're changing the vision of their mission. Going from straight line king to racetrack monster

Gt3 RS is probably the standard for high revving NA. That 4.0 RS puts out 520hp, 500 in GT3 so 125-130hp per liter. Say this thing does “just” 120 per liter you’re at 660hp without forced infection. I’ll take it!

My C8 Vert is still 3000 status but it is getting so late in the year I think I’ve now decided to wait for the ZO6. My C7 ZO6 Vert is still doing fine and with bolt ones puts 700+ hp to the ground. No shortage of fun while waiting for the C8 Z!

I’ve noticed that the taunted C8 horsepower is what it dyno’d at. If the C8 Z06 dyno’s at 600hp, it’ll be 50hp more than the current C7 Z06. Most i’ve seen dyno’d were around 550hp. Also, even with a rear engines the C8, there is still tire spin and with the Z06 that means a lot of tire spin.

No chance it is just a normally aspirated 5.5 Liter engine. It quite simply won’t have enough torque. There is a limit to how much torque you can get out of 5.5 liters without boost. No production NA engine has ever developed more than 90 lb/ft per liter and most high performance cars are closer to 80 lb/ft per liter. No chance the Z06 is going to have less torque than the base model stingray. I think it will actually be a hybrid or it will be a boosted engine.

Who said it will have less torque than the Stingray? I bet it'll have the same or a bit more. One of the tradeoffs for having a flat plane crank and a high redline is torque, but I bet it'll still be right around 500 lb-ft. This can be a good thing by the way - less torque means less traction issues while still having all the power you want. Part of the C7 Z06's problem was that with 650 lb-ft in a FR layout, it would just blow the tires off the wheels every time you put your foot down, first gear was unusable, etc. Less torque will mitigate that while still giving you huge power on the top end. I think it's brilliant, frankly. It allows Chevy to maximize the traction advantages and weight distribution of the MR layout while adding more power at the same time, so we will see the 0-60 numbers drop a bit since traction will not be the limiting factor unlike the C7 Z06. The ZR1/Zora will have a hybrid powertrain and a boosted engine. Not the Z06.

This car its going to be nuts. Flat Crank engine rev up quicker the issue with Flat Crank its vibration thats why euro cars don't go over 4.0 liters. How are they going keep vibration in check with a 5.5 liter? That would be interesting to see.

I thought that as well in the beginning but so far nothing bad to report. The passenger side opening is the only side to have a visible radiator so it's the only one to be concerned with. With that said, the C8.R has mesh on both sides so maybe it is an issue with the higher performance models...

Ive heard one of these guys make mention of a hybrid type corvette similar to the Porsche 918 with 2 electric motors at each front wheel the same way they have the 918. Said it would be close to 1000-1200Hp. That's the one i want to see! And of course the all electric one that theyll undoubtedly do.

Prices are starting to go up and hit above 100k mark. The whole appeal of this was was that it looked like a super car, he had enough power to possibly compete with a super car, but was marketed and advertised as starting at 60k. This reminds of the Nissian, where they started off at below 100k and now have claimed up to 200k for certain models. And the entry model at over 100k

I think this one will start at 95k. They have to leave some room for the GS when they release it a year or two later. I think the GS will start at 75-80k. Same formula as before, Z06 body and base model engine with Z51 suspension pieces.

Pricing them to the point that only certain people can afford. I bought a new z06 in 2003 and it listed for 52k and got it for 46k. Basically in 17 years they have almost tripled in price - crazy.

I may be interested in the C8 Zora as long as it's not an ICE/hybrid. The C8 Stingray is already 7 - 8 secs per lap slower around the Spring Mtn school course than the C7 ZR1 ZTK and has a slower 0-60 and 1/4 mile times as well. Not to mention the ~17 MPH slower top speed (as if anyone cares). Although the C8 Z06 may make up some of that, I believe it will still be slower. 600-650 HP isn't 755 - 772 HP and currently the C8 Stingray weighs almost 200 lbs more as well. However, if they can add 200 HP and shed 200 lbs of weight they may have something. And I suspect that will be the case with the Zora. I'd put $ on it. .27 cents at least. ;)

Yep, makes sense and will be a good thing leaving the C7 Z06 a unique beast like the Big Block C2's were of times past. Some day on an auction block in the future... Naw, but I like the thought of a change to mimic there "racing side" as that is why the Z06 came into being in the first place. Appears the ole guys running the show are waxing nostalgia in a modern way. Good deal and although I will be the one missing the push rod cross-plane crank already gone in the R... you can still have get it in the Base C8s and jack it anyway you please.

It's weird for them to go lower in displacement than the base car for the Z06 model. The 7.0 liter was legendary in the C6 because it had more displacement AND revv'd higher than the base model. It had more of everything and of course sounded insane. We already know based on tuners on KZbin you can produce a 550rwhp LS7 with a simple heads cam recipe so what can they possibly do to improve on this design? The C6 Z only weighed 3150 pounds too. A highly strung 9000 revs might be exotic but DOES IT PERFORM and is it reliable? So far only Porsche has that recipe figured out in their GT3. I am very skeptical!!!

A question from someone who has never seen a c-8 in person, what is your take on rain water entering engine bay. I have a order in. I recently saw a video of a c-8 owner running his c-8 through car wash ( I would NEVER do this), but you never know when you might get caught in a downpour. I do not like the idea of engine getting wet, over time this seems like it could cause some problems with electronic engine controls. Thanks

Would a track based model ZO6 be less driver friendly? More stiffer suspension and maybe no magnetic ride? I've hated driving some of the track based cars that I owned. It looks great though

Dubs I’ve had 2 Zo6 C7 and can tell you they where very easy to drive and to your point I currently have a 2019 ZR1 which is even more track focused and it’s even easier to drive. It trails less with the 10.5” wheels in the front and seems more stable probably because of all the aero. They do a real good job at keeping track focused docile for the street. As most people don’t track them. Hope that helps.

Hey, Justin. Thanks for giving those updates. I always look forward to them. I was wonder how do you feel about the C8R wing? We spoke last time on another one of your videos and I stated that I liked the C8 without any wing, giving it a more European look. But, when you showed the photo of the C8R, I noticed the wing was distinctly different from the big wing on a regular C8. It is quite aesthetic and fits the design way better than any other wing I've seen. Let me know your thoughts.

I think the wing on the C8R is way nicer than anything that comes on the C8 right now. There is a good chance the ZO6 will get that same kind of wing so we'll see!

I’m gonna guess a 2.6 to 2.7 to sixty and a hi to mid 10’s 1/4 if you look a a McLaren 600Lt which is even lighter with 600HP that’s very accurate I’d say. Owning a 19 ZR1 I was hoping to get a Little more HP but might have to wait for the ZR1 option. I’m sure people will modify the C8 Z06 as well. Thanks Justin for the info. Keep up the good work.

600hp sounds about right with those specs. The 5.2L ford is rated @ 526 I think and about 4 years old now. WIth well over a half decade of developement and .3L additional displacement (and a few hundred more RPM) 600 should be about spot on. I'm guessin they'll go for about 605.

The only thing that I don’t want about the C8 ZO6 is it to sound like a Ferrari. I love the natural roar of the Corvette V8 engine. Best sounding V8 in the world. Please Please and I mean Please keep the regular sound. That’s the point of competition.

I really hope to make the sound like Ferrari, but I don't know how to achieve that without turbo charger. Moreover, it will look amazing if they lower the car little bit to make it looks like super car. It will be freaking awesome. I'm not really happy with current C8 height and it definitely needs to be lowered down

The Ferrari sound gets ruined by turbos. You want that natural aspiration to make the sound. And lowering it can easily be done with aftermarket mods.

Lol, should be able to get a good deal on the Z06 C8 in a couple of years. As soon as the Zr1 twin turbo C8 comes out, every Z06 C8 owner will be trading in for the Zr1. Happens every time a new corvette generation come out. As with all past generations, the new Zr1 model is always by far the best. Most people who can afford the Z06 can afford the Zr1.

I've driven the modern 427cid. This would be the ideal engine if the original bugs were corrected. Naturally Aspirated Chevy can get @least 600 + ponies combined with an 8 spd dct, if u build it, it will sell. Flat crank, & dohc, to each his/her own. Wait for you @ finish line🇺🇸

You can make high 600 hp out of a 5.5L flatplane crank . Porsche makes 520hp out of a 4.0L that res to 8800rpm and that HP per liter will make 715hp at 5.5L . So it can be done. That Porsche is a production car .

They better fix the back of the car. The current 2020 mid engine has a Camero like rear.. Just doesn’t fit. Makes me cringe.. I REALLY hope they fix that in the performance models.

Great video Justin. Few questions, as of right now, the date of this posted video, is there any %100 factual information that this will be Z06? I thought GM wanted to give Grand Sport its own identity. And it would start with this N/A engine. Then Z06 would be this engine plus turbos and ZR1 would be this engine plus turbos and the electric motors on the front. Yes, this is the mid-engine Corvette, is there any information that really supports a Zora specific model? Or is that what the majority of Corvette community has speculated and adopted because of the story behind Zora?.....thx for your videos and time.

Thank you! The Z06 has been rumored for months now to be a flat plane crank naturally aspirated engine so I doubt this is the Grand Sport. The latest rumor is that there won't be a Grand Sport for the 8th generation Vette, but as usual.. These are rumors so it's all subject to change.

I’m waiting on the GS/Eray in 2023, the 5.5 is a new production engine and 6.2 has heritage. I’d rather have an AWD hybrid you don’t need 5.5 flat plane crank and higher revs if you have a 6.2 with an electric motor upfront to take you all the way to red line in all 8 FTC gears. What they don’t talk about is the 4 valves to a cylinder doc in the 5.5, it look like a full skirt on that block with separate main caps unlike a similar Caddy engine that will remain nameless. They get to drop the deck height, the cams are on top and not in the middle on the block like the 6.2

They aren’t going NA. It’s impossible to make the power NA and still pass emissions and mpgs requirements due to regulatory. This is why every other high performance car ferrari porsche etc is now adding turbos, this is due to the epa regulations. It would be cool but it’s not happening. Large displacement vibrations will have issues in NVH standards that I’m curious to see how to get pass that.

Everyone wants the younger demo. From retail to non profit every marketer says the same thing. The issue isnt the product its the price. Although this car is priced wayyyyy below the competition your still closing in on 100k for a second car that you drive for fun. No matter how young you want to go incomes just dont support it.

I appreciate that! The active aero has been discussed on the channel before but basically, it's the aerodynamic bits such as a spoiler that will raise and lower based on speed.

I am surprised that 2022. I know things are a disaster now but that's along time from base to Z06. Maybe it can't be helped. Love hearing that it's the first of many high performance models. Flat plain crank is a good thing. Plus there will be even higher performance models to come
