The discomfort/confusion about not using photographic references means that you are totally on the right path! When you grow as an artist you are supposed to be challeged and hit these kinds of road blocks that make you question everything. It's going to make you a better artist - it feels gross but stick with it! So proud ❤
@brainworm2327 ай бұрын
When I was in art school, our academic drawing professor explained the difference between photo and observational references. Drawing from a photo is drawing from an already produced 2D image, while drawing from observation is transfering a 3D image to a 2D plane. He basically said that not a single camera can be compared to our eyes in terms of angle of view and stuff, so any camera will distort image ever so slightly, and also eleminate the percieved distance between objects. Therefore photoreferences are significantly worse at teaching us depth perception => it's much harder to develop an ability of thinking in 3D while drawing/painting in 2D, which is extremely important skill. Some might say it is the only one you have to have as an artist.
@Jimmyneutron199887 ай бұрын
Art world is huge and there's no one way to produce your art. At my art school almost everyone uses photo reference they still do amazing art and that's none of anyone's business. I finished my artschool and honestly every painting i did from photo looked better than from life even tho i was constantly forced to work from life. It just wasn't for me.
@luumo5057 ай бұрын
@@Jimmyneutron19988 Right but that's not as important since artschool is about aquiring skills that you can later choose how to apply. There's nothing lost from learning observational regardless, even if somebody decides to continue using photo references later.
@Samthebaeness7 ай бұрын
Oh naurr this is not good for me 💀
@brandi5987 ай бұрын
@@Jimmyneutron19988 That is actually the exact problem with using photo reference too. You’re more concerned about ending up with a better final image that you don’t actually ever learn the proper skills that are necessary to become a more well rounded and skilled artist. You need to get comfortable with making bad drawings to eventually learn how to make amazing drawings. The final product is not the only thing that matters in art, the process itself is also important. And it works in your favor as if you get amazing at observational drawing you will be 100 times more skilled at drawing from photographs because you’re more capable of interpreting the photo and visualizing it as a 3D form.

8:40 some differences on drawing/painting from life vs photography that I've observed lately 1) photograph is static. real life the model (even if its you) is making minor adjustments all over, so its up to the artist who is drawing from life to choose the most idealized pose for waht they are trying to say with their art. Like imagine if you got to choose from between 3 very minorly different pictures for each area, that is kind of what you're doing when you're drawing/painting from life 2) photographs tend to make things darker in the shadows where there is really COLOR :O so for instance on some of my paintings I used to do a dark line across the lips (becuase duhhh its dark) but after observing from like I now use red. Subtle but different there's probably more shit too but that's just what clicked for me lately.

The difference between reference and observation is that in observation you have stereoscopic vision with your two eyes so there is depth but that's something a photography does for you (: also there is nothing like real life in terms of colors and depth of shados for example that a photography on screen of print and it helps you to be able to draw without taking a picture and using the best rendition of reality available to us. At the end of the day if it was the same you would have no problem using photos and feel more comfortable with thjem. You are awesome and heavy work could take you tothe next level :DDD

Those were fun times lol. Good job with your finals! I like how your observational self portrait came out, especially how your mark-making and erasing sculpt your face.

I am a second year game art student, primarily focused on 3d and i pretty much hated (and still hate) my 1st year and current experience. I lowkey force myself not to think that way because my parents' financial background could only afford this programme and university in particular and like, be grateful that im in higher education and whatnot, but the negative experience, especially with the actual process of creating the art, felt much more real and deeper. In my situation I currently have quite literally no other option (cant drop out, cant switch majors, cant return to home country) which is a nightmare and i sincerely hope that you get to find an option that will make you happier and genuinely enjoy creating art.

Idk if this is kinda what you're feeling (around the 15:00 min mark) but as a self-taught portrait artist I legit hate all drawing and painting classes lmao. Cause it feels like they either try to tell me 'what's allowed' or 'not allowed'. The teachers didn't feel like were giving guidance, it felt like they were giving restrictions and trying to tell me what to do, which um no. The only way I can take an art class and not get really passive aggressive towards the teacher and possessive over my art is if I legit have no idea how to do the thing. Like I've taken really fun classes in textiles and animation. Idk if any of this is close to what you're feeling, but either way, I enjoy your videos and especially your art!
@kellalafaire85347 ай бұрын
I felt the exact same way in my drawing classes. In reality, no one cares how you get your work done, as long as you do. But in art school, they want you to experiment and try new things that maybe you’ll come to really love. However it definitely makes teachers teach a certain way and forget the way art is so individual.
@andreafeelsfantastic7 ай бұрын
They aren’t really trying to tell you what’s allowed, they just want you to try specific methods to see how they work. That gives you a wider base of understanding about the possibilities, in your life as an artist after the class, than you would have had without them helping you get out of your comfort zone.

They're not all gonna be winners to their creators, even if it's better than the viewer has the skill to do. I think the only real difference between using photo reference and real life observation is that you have to account for the tiny movements your subjects make.
