For a entertainer like Cab Calloway who had been in the business for as long as he was he deserved a standing ovation, I cant believe they sat on there asses.

Pound for pound one of the best entertainers of the last century who made it look effortless and fun decade after decade. It's one thing to be singing a hit in 1931 but to deliver that track with the same vigor and joy in 1965 all the way to the early 1990s? There's only one Cab Calloway and thank heavens we had him.

@@killerdillr This was 1965 - another era entirely. Look at Top of the Pops' much younger audience and how comically inert it was at this time. But give them credit - once the Swedes warmed up they made a good fist of those calls on Minnie the Moocher.

Somehow I am saddened to watch this. Cab ended up performing in smaller clubs in the 50s and 60s and his before so energetic jazz music became Las Vegas entertaining a white audience. His voice and persona is still intact here. His dance steps on Jumpin´Jive - The Shim Sham Shimmy thoroughly enjoyable, however watching all these audience clapping out of tune on 1 and 3 - sigh...!! I saw him in Denmark back in 1985 with his daughter. I do not recall how many attended but indeed not over crowded. Most people knew him from Blues Brothers. I think his version of Cant Buy Me Love here does it, and funnily enough Ella Fitzgerald recorded that one as well. Despite my lukeward reception of this - I loved every bit of CAB indeed. Thank you.
@jackdolphy89653 жыл бұрын
I think I get what you’re saying. Cab was a living incredible treasure, right until he passed he was a direct link to a very deep past. In a way he became a historical relic. Gotta remember he was there when the music was invented for goodness sake. And as you said he ended up performing small clubs. Sad for sure. Many of the original great jazz heroes ended up much worse off and more forgotten than Cab. Think Lucky Thompson, Albert Ayler, many etc.
