Never ceases to amaze me, the skills, art and extent of model railroading in this day and age. Having been a model railroader for some 55 years now I have finally managed to get my trains and locos to run quietly and now I am told I should have them make noises!!!
@davidcurtis5398
@davidcurtis5398 6 жыл бұрын
Don't think that the engines need to make noise. I hate most of the bad engine sounds and most of the horns. Most of the engines sound like 1940's cheep electric razors and I have no sound on any of my engines - just a wast of money.

I really don't like the sounds that current DCC sound boards make. So many of the engine noises sound like a 1940's electric razor, very loud and just bad. Silence is golden...I'm glad my battery system does not have sound yet.......

Frank Kopke I don't know what language you speak. You use words like railroading, railroader... but when I try and understand your shitty definition on rail roading I am somewhat at loss to understand what do you mean by roading, roader and nonsense, because I see no road under rail tracks. Perhaps you are trying to tell us that a railway is a road, as in 'roadway', which is a track made of gravel, or laid with bitumen or made of concrete and used for pneumatic vehicles, but for trains, how does it become a rail road when these are tracked lines made by laying two steel beams on each side of an endless row of wooden or concrete sleepers and only run in two direction. How does that become a road to call it a rail road? I thought Americans were highly educated and spoke proper English but now I am starting to doubt it and wonder the opposite on how some things turn out to have a shitty meanings, such as how the fuck does 'drone', a word that had always meant a continuous loud sound, become a name, machine or a stupid rc model Quadcopter and other bullshit? How does a railway become a rail road when the two are distinctively different, one is a rail track used for trains, the other is a road used for steerable pneumatic wheeled vehicle? No wonder why they say in the end, ignorance is bliss. Sadly, I have to agree on that.

Amazing layout, THANK YOU FOR SHARING!! I have 2 ask you, how many cars, long train will be able to hold the helix. I've had problems at a club, I used have with my 20 cars, laying down, going around the pole. They fell off the upper, to the lower. THANK YOU!

And everyone (including you guys here on KZbin) get to benefit from it! Thanks for watching

I thought at first this may have been a club layout--the giveaway was the plexiglass covers over the signals on the egde of the benchwork. This is typically done to protect them during open houses, but then the shelves with all the exposed rolling stock say this is a private layout. Your comment above fills in the rest of the story--so it's actually a little of both if I'm not mistaken. Just out of curiousity, what is the helix visible at 2:48 made of?
@signalupproductions
@signalupproductions 6 жыл бұрын
Thats where most people get confused with our arraignment. Yes it is privately owned, but the house is open to close friends to work on it as their own. I put way too much work into the signals to see them knocked over! And they have been, sometimes even with the guards. We do have open houses where area modelers are invited, but generally our weekly work night is word of mouth, and generally open to anyone who wants to visit. The helix is made by www.easyhelix.com/ and has held up well over the years.

That is a wonderful long and interesting run with well done signaling as well. My only small criticism (if I may) is that the right of way could be improved by painting the rail sides throughout in a brownish rust with weathered black on the mainline only,and doing a more a realistic ballasting job going forward. some area's appear a little wonky. But overall this layound is spectacular!

Pretty amazing track and set-up and I'd like to ask a couple of questions, which may have already been asked before, but how does the track old up over time and the elements? What is the actual track voltage? Do you have have any problems with critters or wildlife causing havoc? This set-up makes "A beautiful Day in the neighborhood" look amateurish. ;) Thanks to Bill and yourself for making this possible. What drove me to this sight was trying to setup a train track under a Christmas tree.
@signalupproductions
@signalupproductions 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment. The track voltage is a constant 16v AC, and we use a DCC control system made by Digitrax. This layout is HO Scale, and in the basement of the owner's home, so no wildlife other than a couple of over-zealous model railroaders! As for the track, it has held up quite well over the last 10 years. The crossing in the desert actually needed replaced as the plastic frogs were wearing thin. But we operating dozens of trains a night, and 1 night a week so a lot more than the average layout.

If you are refering to the paper sign against the wall about 1:35, it says Congress Park. It is always a work in progress, and a huge team effort!

At 11:25 we saw a stop signal. Why did it show red as there was never a problem and the train then went through the red??? Why not have a reason for the red??? Nice straight track and smooth curves. Why don't you remove the nails in the middle of the track as most of the track is finished and removing the nails would make for a better realistic road.Looking at 14:56 someone knows how to lay straight track - I love it!!!!! Even your track that really can not be seen is straight with smooth curves - wow!!!
@signalupproductions
@signalupproductions 6 жыл бұрын
I like the idea of removing the track nails, and will forward that on to the owner. He was very meticulous when laying the track. We rarely have a derailment not cause by operator error. As for the signals, I designed the system based on current UP signalling methods. This crossing is an Automatic Interlocking. The logic is programmed to allow a "first-come-first-serve" approach-request. I failed to reset the interlocking while setting up to record this. The signal to the left of our view at that point you can see is Clear. Like prototype automatic interlockings, I have a key over ride, where crews can "work the box" when met with a Stop signal. Just like the prototype, crews comply with the instructions as to how to proceed. As you watch, the Clear signal drops to red. I did press the request button, but a track light must of been stuck on, and the signals are interlocked. It was red for something... Just dont know what lol. As per the instructions, wait a set amount of time after working the box, and if no permissive signal is shown, proceed passed the stop signal at restricted speed until reaching the next signal. Which is why I proceeded slowly to the next one, which happened to also be Stop. (I forgot to clear that route, and scurried into the dispatch room to line the signal.)

This was the best 23 minutes I’ve spent in a long time! The crew has done a masterful job in almost every area of the layout. You know I cannot tell you it’s perfect - then we wouldn’t have anything to comment about! Except for a few dingdongs, most criticism was constructive (Hey England - bite me.). So my only gripe was your screen notes were much too brief. But certainly not enough to keep me from “liking” and subscribing. The fact that this video is almost two years old but yet you still respond to comments means a lot to me: you are helping us become better modelers, I’d like to think we’re helping you make better videos. Except of course for that “perfect” modeler from bloody Eng... well, never mind. Thanks for the ride, now excuse me I have some more videos to watch! Ghost of SP Fresno CA

Thanks for the feedback. Yes the whole group reads the comments during our weekly work nights, and we all enjoy a good laugh at "those" comments! The imperfections give the layout character, and a testimony that as a group working together, some folks are new and it's great they can practice on this layout. Thanks for subscribing, we have some other videos we're working on for this layout (just have to find time!)

It would be nice, if, at some point to reveal the sound locomotives pulling the train, how many cars in the train, duplicate the trip with the camera at different locations of the train... to me, sounds like first run Rapido GMD-1's.

Signal CP 212 at 1:45 doesn't seem to make sense. Firstly it's _after_ the points (switch), so the train didn't actually pass along the track it was directly over, and second, how does it tell you if you are going straight ahead or diverging to the right? Wouldn't you need two signal heads, or some other kind of junction indicator (like a UK "feather")? Superb layout however. I can only dream of having a model railway like this.

Good observation. Making lemonade out of lemons, I guess lol. At the time of this video, the switch in question was not powered, and thus not controlled by the dispatcher. The signal here only showed track conditions ahead of that switch but only for the route lined. Not prototypical, but I was doing the best I could given the existing track plan, and operators still learning how to run trains based on signal indication. With our recent track re-alignment project, this has been fixed. The signal at this same spot is now a dwarf, and the switch is powered, protected by the dwarf. Thanks for the comment!

Great video, I would love to see this without the engine noise, just the sound of the train on the track.

Thanks for the feedback. Interesting idea about using a non sound engine. I plan to run the camera car again soon since we just finished a major overhaul of the main line. I will take this under consideration. Thanks

say I was wondering why did ur train run a red light at 11:22...why didnt it turn green?....other than that ur layout is amazing...also is ur locomotive a MTH brand, I have MTH and mine sounds exactly like yours....bell, horn, engine, and crew
@signalupproductions

You have a good ear. Yes I was using my MTH GP38. As for the signal, this diamond is protected by an automatic interlocker. So the logic to clear a signal (better than Stop) depends on several variables. If you look to the opposing signal bridge to the left, you can see in the video it was green. I guess prior to me recording, I moved another train around which must have triggered the approach. There is a key release here which I tried to operate (which set the other signal to red), it should have then cleared the signal for my train but (probably my programming error) it did not. So the rules say for an automatic interlocker, one you operate the key release and wait the proper amount of time, a train can pass the Stop signal proceeding at restricted speed until reaching the next signal. You will notice how slow I went from this point to the next signal. We have since rebuilt this part of the layout, and I am programming the new interlocker which will work better (and it now has a working semaphore!)

18:42. Shouldnt there be an exit signal on both lines?
@signalupproductions
@signalupproductions 5 жыл бұрын
Forgive me, im not fully understanding your question, but I'll answer the best i can from what I think you're asking. The main line on this layout is basically a folded dog-bone design. Therefore at times the physical location of the main wraps around itself even though logically they are 2 different modeled locations. The signal in view at that time in this video only governs the main on the right side of the video screen. The main line we're on at this point does not interact with the control point which that signal governs. Fast forward 20 seconds and the intermediate signal for the main line we're on comes into view. I built this signal system following current Union Pacific practices, except in a few situations where I had to pull out my modeler's license lol. At 8:28 you get a better view of the control point for that other main in view at the time you are asking about. Thanks for the question!

I dont, but I posted a video last month or so call "UPSF Walk-thru" which shows the helix a little more. I've had several requests for a cab ride up to the upper level. I will make that a priority. Keep an eye out in the next week or so!

Why do all these cab ride videos have that fish-eye appearance? Is it the camera's resolution or a KZbin glitch?

Bobby Slater in this case, i was using a GoPro camera sitting on a flat car. GoPro's and similar cameras use a very wide angle lens, leaving a fisheye look. Just the trade off with action cameras
