“I just thought, this is it, this is how I want to live.” Watching a master basket maker at work in Sussex, England, was a life-changing experience for Deborah Needleman, then Editor-in-Chief of T: The New York Times Style Magazine, and formerly editor of Wall Street Journal Magazine and Domino, the latter of which she founded. Captivated by the slow, meditative processes of the age-old craft of basket weaving, the eminent editor (then in her offices at the New York Times) was so inspired that she had a sudden epiphany. “From planting to harvesting to grading the willow to soaking to making, I just thought, this is it, this is how I want to live,” she says.
Watch this beautiful film, shot by Luca Cepparo at Deborah’s Hudson Valley studio, for an inspiring insight into her new creative life and “magic hands”.
