People thought his movements were so weird and uncomfortable, but if you know what Cabaret is about it makes sense. He’s pretending to be a puppet, much like the characters will soon feel under Nazi regime. It’s foreshadowing the manipulation and coersion. I also love that at about 0:35, he places himself in a swastikah pose- it’s brilliant choreography actually.

You've missed the entire point of cabaret. Alan Cummings version has a sexy sinister under tone that by the end of the show you understand WHY his performance is so alluring and enticing. It's like he knows something you don't, and you really want to know. Eddie Redmayne's is uncomfortable, and off putting yet strangely playful, full of joy and childish. Every MC has his thing. I think Eddie did it well. Which considering the ending is also good. The MC is not supposed to make you feel secure or comfortable. He is misleading you into laughing along, so that by the end of the play you're left wondering "What the fuck just happened?"
@przhenojajce57744 ай бұрын
@@marceya9585 The Emcee is there PRECISELY to make you feel secure and comfortable. That's the point of the musical - political apathy and wilful ignorance in favour of entertainment and false security. He is meant to make you lower your guard and ignore the rising conflict quite literally on stage in front of you. That's what makes it so impactful when the ending twist gets revealed, whatever the twist may be. Eddie is a wonderful actor and his performance in Cabaret is absolutely incredible, no doubt about it. But the reason why so many people don't like this particular reimagining of the Emcee is because it kind of misses the point. It's glaringly obvious from the very start that something's not right. He doesn't lure you in, he doesn't lull you into falsified safety, he's creepy and off-putting from the very start. I just don't think this Emcee fits the show's message and narrative. Having in mind the ending of this particular production (which I won't spoil) paired with the fact that Hitler is said to have been incredibly charming and charismatic, a much more impactful character, in my opinion, would have been if they amped up the Emcee's charm and charisma tenfold; make him as likeable and sympathetic as you possibly can without sacrificing some of his characteristic "not-quite-rightness". Then, once you've made the audience feel safe and secure in their delusion that safety in the club is guaranteed, make the grand reveal. Make the audience perpetrator, not just spectator.

this is unbelievably annoying and totally wrong footed from the jump. the emcee is meant to have been the nightly MC of a cabaret not a fae prince who helped the nazis rise to power. Do people not get that the reason he looks spooky is that he is a ghost? Cabaret is a show where the audience is visiting the former site of a Berlin night spot and the ghost of the former emcee is imparting a vision of the terrible fates that befell the spirited who haunt it. This “tee hee i’m doing the holocaust aren’t i a dreadful little imp” thing is not just grating, it’s fundamentally ridiculous to believe people would go to a club where the nightly constant is a guy acting like this. This is worse than an aggressive bar trivia MC. This is worse than a wedding DJ who singles people out to shame them for not dancing. This is worse than a corporate-hired inspirational speaker doing mandatory team building trust falls. When an art scene begins to become actively hostile to its audience as a form of gatekeeping, especially when it’s already prohibitively expensive as the primary gatekeeping mechanism, it’s time to pull up and let the old guard rot. Cabaret is a tragedy that is genuinely heartbreaking but it should not be actively repellent, it should be transportive. The emcee should be UNIRONICALLY inviting the audience to be swept away. This sucks
