Thanks for the video! After watching several others on this, I finally gave it a go for my 2012 Mazda5. It’s a total pain in the neck, just like everyone says. It’s difficult because you cannot clearly see the top two screws of the cover you need to remove. I ended up going at it by feel, and using the shortest screwdriver I could find. It took me 45 minutes to complete the whole thing (I vacuumed it out too) but at least I know what to do now.

Great video! A good thing to note is that not all cars have a cabin air filter. One example, all model years of Dodge Neons never had one. I've heard people adding one by using zip ties to secure same filter foam right over the cabin intake.

The filter change on a Mazda 5 is a hump-job. The top filter doesn’t snap in place, so you have to somehow hold it up, get your hand out of the way and somehow get the lower filter in. There isn’t a lot of room up there under the dash to do this. Two of the screws are really hard to reach, so much that when the Mazda dealer did it they just left the top right screw out. My Honda Element filters take me five minutes, this took me over an hour. Finally my young tall skinny son was able to get the new filters in. I hate to pay dealers money, but this DIY on a post 2012 Mazda 5 is a nightmare. It’s not as easy as the video looks. A simple clip to hold the upper filter in place while you slide in the bottom one would help, but it still is a wonky design.

It looks like you put back in the old dirty filters. Am I missing something? Well made video. I recently found out about the existence of these cabin air filters recently. I had the hardest time trying to put the new filters back in and gave up but am now inspired to try again. You made it look too easy.

They are FreshBreeze from Fram and have some kind of carbon and Arm & Hammer baking soda in them. Discontinued now but I found one on Amazon for $20. If you don't smell burning bugs and wood don't bother. You are in for a world of hurt. Two hidden screws on top and only 4" inches of space to work. Maybe remove the passenger seat so you can ask a crack head to lay down there. Good luck!

I bought the same brand from Amazon, it's like that. She made it look easy because, the access to the cabin air filter on the Genpu are different than the Genone, which is a pain.

Great write-up. Regarding the 04-09 models, the entire dash does not have to be disassembled. Prior to removing the filter cover; disconnect the battery, fuse block (7 connectors) and the fuse block metal frame (2 screws) that blocks the hvac cover. Would be good to see a supplemental video if you still have access to the Gen 1 Mazda 3. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the video! It's helpful! The way that Mazda chose to locate this cabin filter on my 2004 Mazda3 1.6 (european version) has to be one of the best possible examples of idiotic design. I love my Mazda3, but this is ridiculous. In your video changing the cabin air filter seems much easier than my car :)

2:50 how do you make the top stay? It took me like 5 mins to remove the two panels and screws, but took me half an hour to align the top filter and push it to go up and STAY. I almost gave up. Half an hour just to make the top filter stay and not slide down. This is such an engineering design FAIL.
@everythingdiy8 жыл бұрын
+TukTuk Syko I got lucky, Usually I would have the same problem where the filter would keep sliding down but somehow it just stayed up there. Thanks for watching!
@Signingupsucksballss8 жыл бұрын
+TukTuk Syko I spent half an hour also but I found a trick at the end. First have the filter go in more towards the front of the vehicle (away from the metal mesh at the back), then position the filter upwards then push towards to the back where the metal mesh is. My biggest challenge was putting the cover with the sensor where it belong, 4 times it didn't sit right and I had to readjust. Sucks to be me, because I only found out I have the wrong filters after I took everything apart. At least I got a ton of leaves out... I get to do this all over again once I get the right filters.
@samuraifugitivo8 жыл бұрын
Half an hour?, it took me a whole hour removing, cleaning and the worst, trying to fit the filters on place (with some scrapes on my knucles). The place is tiny and very uncomfortable to work on. I cant figure out why car manufactures use this absurd places for cabin filters having a lot more space under the hood near the cowl vent. This location would prevent bigger objects, insects or animals to get insude the vent system.

I just installed my cabin air filter using the same fram product you used in your vid. One question... There was no airflow direction arrows on the filter. I put them in, with the grey side facing the seats... Is that the correct position?
@bohickity5 жыл бұрын
If you place the filters in with the side pull taps facing out, the foam gasket topped filter goes in first foam up. The bottom filter slides into the channel on the bottom of the top filter. You can’t screw it up if you have the correct one on top and bottom and the pull tabs facing the door. It’s not like a furnace, it won’t go in with the airflow direction backwards.

On a 2011 Mazda 3 you need to disconnect the battery before you do this. Otherwise you could have an arc on your blower motor (that you remove to do this) and ruin it. I suspect you need to do it on many other Mazda 3 years as well so disconnect the battery first.
@nonameblue71114 жыл бұрын
Its easier to disconnect the plug on filter cover than disconnect the battery. Use a flat blade screwdriver to push in the lock on the plug.

Great video for the Gen 2 Speed 3 but this is child's play compared to a 2008 MS3. What a tremendous pain in the ass it is to change it on the 2004-2009 3 or MS3, like mine. When I get a discount coupon from the dealer I let them do the job. I hate paying but it is truly painful. I guess it comes down to how much time and effort you want to put into it.

A little late on this comment, but no. It's in basically the same place, but it's a huge pain to access. You take off the 2 plastic covers like she did, but it gets nasty from that point. You'll end up disconnecting everything from the fuse panel and removing it (it's under the glove box). Then, you'll take off the bracket that holds in the fuse panel, because it blocks access to the panel. Then, you can remove the filter cover and change out the filters. Be sure to take some pics of the fuse panel connections before you start disconnecting them. There's no single thing that's difficult, but the whole process requires you to work in a low, tight space, so very uncomfortable. Some videos out there have you take off the glove box, but I wouldn't do that. There are some vids out there covering the 1st gen 3s.
