Blower motor replacement: 1-1/2 to 3 hours ($160 / $275 / 450)
I had to lube the fan motor on my 850. The motor was squeaking and if left in that condition long it will cause the motor to fail. You can also use these instructions to replace the fan. Procedures are similar with the S70.

I managed to oil the cage side bearing without removing the cage from the motor by using a long straw on the spray can and being careful not to spray into the motor and brushes. Not as good as your method Robert but the cage is 30 year old plastic so it looked a bit brittle. I live in Sweden and the 850 turbos are very popular with young people and increasing in value now. Thanks again Robert you just saved me a lot of cash.

Great vid Robert, thanks! I am pretty sure the Blower fan just went out in my 1997 Volvo 850 GLT. I just took the old one out waiting on the new one. A couple weeks ago the fuel pump went out. My Volvo mechanic in Des Moines Iowa wanted $230.00 for the pump. I got an OE replacement Direct fit (complete assembly in the shroud and all) from carparts.com for $54.00 delivered! With I think a three year warranty! I stuck the same brand in an old 1998 S 70 I had and have had good luck with them. The blower motor was like $150.00 at FCP. I got another replacement EO Direct fit entire blower with a one year unlimited mile warranty from carparts once again for $54.00 delivered, waiting on it now. Can't wait to see what goes out next! : )

Robert, thank you, this video was the bomb! I went a year not knowing what was blowing the fuses, I thought I ruined the fuse panel when putting a new fuse in with the car running, haha. I trouble shooted the blower motor as you said by just unplugging it and turning the car on. (no blown fuse) I just installed a new blower motor and I have heat! Thank you again, God bless you (note: I had trouble punching the shaft through the housing and WD40 worked well)

Another great video! My 850's blower motor was in such a bad condition that it was time to replace it. I found almost new motor that came from MB W124, which has same blower motor but different squirrel cage... This video made the process as simple as 1-2-3. But oh boy, that original squirrel cage was TIGHT! Eventually I managed to swap the motor without breaking anything (Except the MB squirrel cage). Thanks!

Thanks a lot for your videos, you have saved the day obce again! Your my go-to-guy when something goes wrong on my 850. My blower motor has made that squeal for quite some time now, but only for a few seconds. But this past week it has made a new noise everyday. Now it has stopped functioning completely, and the Rec and A/C lights flash when I try to turn the heat on. It is negative cold here in WV. So thanks again for posting this and many other videos.

Another great educational video Robert... how much money you have saved the DIY (whatever their issues for not taking it to the mechanic that needs to eat too). The counter above says 60,363 views as of 5/26/2013. Today is 9/19/2020. Just running the numbers Robert, you have saved your viewers (we have to average here) say each one of them paid $300 to have their CBM replaced (that is just adding $25 onto your $275 number above... we know it could move either way. Now the math... 60,363 X 300 = $18, 108,900. Wow! Congratulations and thanks! I am really in a tight place with COVID-19 and have been out of work! :) Living in NY to boot! Part 2... Removed CBM... WD-40 Lithium Grease - will spin but not as free as it should be... I spun and spun and spun some more... still stiff. It blew a fuse last winter after it was doing the Owl Screeching... more trouble-shooting... maybe the MCC is gone too... I hope not. Will report back with part 2 later. Thanks again. BTW... 220+K ...a great piece of engineering work.

Hey again - Robert you are a scholar and a gentlemen for doing this! You saved me much time and money. Here are some pointers I can pass along. The coupler Robert used is a 4" PVC coupler. I found one at home depot for 1.97 - brilliant! This was easy for me using a Philips head screw driver as I did not have a real punch. I suspect a punch would be a better solution. I read a lot of opinions on weather or not to use WD-40 or white lithium grease. I may have found the best of both worlds.... WD-40 brand has white lithium grease "protectant". I used that and it seemed to work well. I connected the motor and ran the motor both ways by switching the plug - it only runs for a bit and then fault out. I read this in another thread and thought it may help the grease penetrate the bearings - YMMV The only thing that gave me some trouble were the T25s on the right side of the fan housing. You will need a something small to get at these. I used a small ratchet with the an adapter to finally get at it. Again many, many thanks to Robert for this video. Great job. What a great way to start out the new year with NO squeal! Cheers (sorry for the long comment)...

You're amazing. Thanks for the help and info. Best wishes.. it looks like I have a bad resistor as well as a squeaky fan... Let's hope I can fix it before the Massachusetts weather comes in for the winter. One thing I've come across about this car that I don't know if you could help me with is the fact that it freezes shut... Not just the key hole/ lock in the door not just the windows and the doors freeze shut but also the door latches even freeze open once I get the door open! Is lithium grease ok for the door latch and key hole? And is there any way to prevent my windows and doors from freezing shut? What I think is happening there is ice is finding its way between the rubber gaskets of the doors, and between the glass and the rubber of the windows.... what can I use to reduce the amount of freeze other than replacing the door rubber gasket for a better seal..? I really appreciate all of your help sir! You're a godsend! Honestly, grateful for the help

Thanks again for these videos. My 94 turbo started flashing 2 lights (ECC) and no fan. I bought a replacement fan off ebay, but the impeller was a smidge too large to fit.....I could force it in the housing but the impeller contacted the housing and it made a whining/hum. For whatever reason I tried the OE fan again and low and behold....it works. Went ahead and cleaned it up and reinstalled it. AC in Florida summer is a welcome addition!

Robert - If those bearing are sintered bronze (oilite) it would be better to run some light oil (like 3 in1) into them as they are designed to absorb the oil into the bearing material itself and release it as needed. The absorbtion of the oil would be aided if the bearing were warmed. I imagine grease would not absorb into the bearing.

Are you sure it's the blower motor and not a belt under the hood? Sometimes people hear a squeek when they first start the car but it has nothing to do with the blower motor. Mine was squeeking at certain fan speeds. It is very quiet now and should stay that way for about 2 years.

A few things wrong, odometer dont work (watched your video how to check mileage under the hood) thats my first task! I have a question about my coolant system. I cant hear any fan cut on with either heat or AC no matter how low or high the settings. my fan used to sound like a garbage disposal, only about 1/10 as loud, but that sort of sound and i kept running it. now it's totally silent but no air comes out, so i am going to try to fix it or replace it. maybe i should see if i can get one at LKQ Pick a Part. should i see if it runs after lubricating it? or do you think it should be replaced? i was told this was a hard job but after watching your video, i have confidence i can take it apart and put it back, thanks! thanks for taking the time to make and post this video.

Hey RS, mine is squeaking but only under accel and deccel of the car. I guess the shaft is under more load at those times. Did yours do the same at first because it sounds like it's a constant squeak in your video? How's your fix working out so far? The blower motors aren't cheap! Thanks!

Hi Robert; I'd just like to get your input on my situation before I order a replacement blower fan motor and cage assembly for my '97 850. For the past 6-9 months the fan has been intermittently squealing when I ran heat or AC. I've been delaying the lube procedure detailed in this video since changing fan speeds usually quieted it down and I have some physical limitations which complicate my being able to easily complete the task (bad knees). This past weekend while on a long roadtrip, the changing fan speeds trick didn't work and, after about a half hour of intermittent squeaking, the fan shut off. After it quit, when I turned the fan controls on, I could hear a slight hum which makes me think the motor is getting power, but is seized (I turned it off immediately and no longer 'test' it in this manner). From reading through your comments here, I see there is also a relay and a fuse/resistor involved as well as the motor and cage. My questions to you are: Do you think I just need to replace the motor and cage assembly (it's only $55 for the complete assembly on ebay, so I don't think I'll buy a new motor and try to put the old cage on it). Do you think it necessary to check the resistor and/or relay first in case the motor is salvageable with the lube procedure? If so, do you have a video posted where that process is explained? Edit: I found your resistor video. I can find relay info on the volvo forums if you don't have something on your youtube channel. My vehicle is the ECC version. Thank you in advance for your time... wt

Robert - great video as always. I was so close but am now stuck. It's the first steps of reassembly before testing. I put the motor back into the white (yellowish now) plastic housing. Then I went to put that back into the black housing. I understand the black and clear plastic housing should not touch. When I do that, the screw in the top of the black housing does not reach the fan motor. And, the two electrical connectors are too low for them to reattach to the plug. I adjusted the fan inside the clear housing a little bit each way. I went too far one way because when I tried to reattach I broke through the top of the black housing with the fan shaft! Any tips for what I may be doing wrong? Did the silver shaft through the center of the fan somehow shift? I am out of ideas for how to line everything back up. Thank you.

Hi Robert. Wanted to let you know I really find your content helpful. Thanks for the hard work! I do have a question. I have a 97 850 wagon. Developed the sound of a motor grinding and clicking under the passenger side dash whenever the key was turned on. Using your "blower lubrication" video I pulled the glove box and knee guard and I found a motorized re-circulation vent actuator that had gone bad. I can't find that bad boy described anywhere in my books and I can't see how you would replace it without literally disassembling the dash. Have any thoughts on this one?

Is the motor bad or gear arm (white) broken?
@billjames7114
@billjames7114 8 жыл бұрын
+Robert DIY I got it figured out. The arm was indeed off the motor, but the limits in the motor aren't working either. I figured out that only one screw holds the motor (to the left of the blower & called the re-circulation motor/actuator/servo), so I pulled it out and opened it up. The big gear has some teeth damaged so it doesn't drive around to operate the sliding limit contacts on the back of the big gear. Volvo is very proud of these units. The best price I could find new was around $140, and couldn't find a used one in the US. Have left it disconnected for now. If you have any wisdom here let me know.

Hey, thanks for making these great videos that explain all steps well. But I do got a question. I have a 94 volvo 850 and the blower for heat/ac does not come on at all.. When it was still working it only worked on high speed and started making that squeaking sound then it sounded like it was hitting something while spinning when it was on. Im sure the blower motor is shot at this point but how come it never worked on speeds 1-3. The fuses for high speed and 1-3 are good.I appreciate everything you do !

Just a little humor. To be honest I bought this 94 850 18 months ago and I never thought it would still be running at this point. I bought it with 175000 on it now i got 195000 and to be honest I have not put much money into it.. I fixed the Fuel Pump Relay, coolant fan, I just cleaned the MAF sensor and that worked, 2 tires, and a few oil changes. I think i paid 600 maybe 700 for the car. When I first bought it someone backed into me so i got 900 for that. So I def got my money out this car even if it disappeared today thanks to really alot of your videos. I still got a few things I need to fix like the heater. Im from Delaware and its been really cold out here. Just wanna tell ya thanks for a taking the time to make these videos.

the speed control issue is certainly a blower motor resistor. that is the most common failure mode, be happy it didn't fail the other way round like mine did, leaving the fan on very low even when the car was locked and unattended. hello dead battery, every morning. I am going to guess that being run on full may have worn a tired old bearing out to the point of seizing and then overheating the motor. replace the resistor first, see what you get, then replace the motor. aftermarket parts for this are cheap.

Hi Robert . I own a 2004 s40 t5. Has no ac nor heat. 0 air comes out. Everywhere I look says blower motor.resistor or fuses. I checked all my fuses so sadly I think it’s the blower motor . Which happens to be in the middle of the dash and for what I read it seems like a very hard job. What I want to ask is if the resistor is located somewhere else and I just haven’t found it. I have searched a lot of forums but can’t seem to find it . Some say it’s inside the motor. Is this correct?
