Yo Robert, your Video made the journey of replacing the Thermostat easy! Got both bolts out with a long T40 bit without stripping them. The new one doesn't have a pin, but the 850 burped all the air out after a few miles, so i guess it should be ok. Thanks for your advice!

Thanks Robert.. I bent the teeth on a brand new t40 star key trying to get that back bolt off as described..need to make sure to get a quality tool for it. Mine is coated with the black stuff. Must just be for rust prevention rather than a hardening treatment. Also broke the petcock because righty tighty lefty loosey was opposite.. 😂🤦‍♂️ Ie orientation is opposite..it loosens clockwise if you are facing the front of the car

Hi Robert, thanks for all your great videos. I've benefited from many of them and I'm very grateful. I decided to do this job on my 99 V70 and the near T40 bolt wouldn't come out. I've completely stripped the inside, because I tried a few different T40 wrenches and eventually it wore away the inside. I further made things worse by trying a stripped screw removing drill bit, to no avail. I was thinking of cutting the round T40 bolt into a 6 sided "bolt head" shape, so I might be able to get it out with a ratchet wrench. Can you suggest any idea that you would do please? Thanks, Rory

I have a quick question, when I changed my timing belt & water pump on my 97' 850 I realized after I had completed the job that the coolant hose connected to the thermostat housing had no pressure, you could squeeze it like no fluid was in it while the car was running, The car does run great tho, doesn't overheat or has issues on heating up. Could it be a bad thermostat or?

HI Robert, with the colder weather, my temp(96 Volvo 850T5) is fluctuating between 175 and when I get going it drops to around160. Would this affect the engine? My idle is rough and engine hesitates. Would you replace the ECT at the same time? You mention that thermostats should last around 15 years. I replaced the radiator, ECT and thermostat 6 years ago (60,000 miles) and I only use the blue Volvo coolant 50/50 mix.

I have a Volvo s70 and it overheated and also loosing the cooling fluid I found out that the clamp on the lower hose of the radiator was loose so I replaced it with a new clamp Also the temperature gauge is always at the 3 o’clock position and I noticed that the radiator fan is not working So this tell me that the temperature sensor is not working properly and is not telling the fan to turn on when the temperature is gets Hights. Please tell me if my diagnosis is correct Thanks
@RobertDIY

I doubt it. The fan may be broken. Also, if you overheated the engine it likely has a blown head gasket now. Relay, fan, wiring, temp sensor.

If you do that then use only the Volvo OEM temp sensor. I put a Meyle (ordinarily a decent brand for Euro cars) in mine and it failed in less than a year.

Hello Robert. I have an 850. Water pump is 2 years old as is the radiator. 2 days ago, the temperature needle rose to maximum.I drove it a few blocks home. The coolant tank fluid was full, very hot. The top radiator hose was warm, the bottom radiator hose was cool. Drove it today a short distance. The temp needle starts at the 3:00 mark and the radiator fan starts running Within a few blocks, the needle again rises to near maximum. Is this a thermostat issue? Thank you

Hey robert any tips for when Your only able to get about half the coolant back in you got back out? 98 s70 I drained just ab 5quarts from the petcocks. However when I went back to fill I only got around 2.5 quarts back in and that's with the resivour at max level. It burped maybe half a quart after first drive. Have u ever seen these cars not burp properly ? Just think I'm having serious trouble getting the air out because this is my 3rd time redraining the coolant and trying to get the possible air out, I'm assuming air since have over 2 quarts extra lol. I drove it around for 5-10 mins and it went down. Let it cool topped off drove again and doesn't go down anymore. Just astonished that there's so much extra coolant even after driving it once shortly

@@RobertDIY I definitely watched the ending part however you stated you were able to get all of your old coolant back in. Where as for my situation I am not able to get it all back in even after driving it around . Still have around 1.5-2 qts extra from the initial drain . That's what I was hoping to get ur opinion on .I just don't wanna be harming the motor since I believe I am missing almost 2qts

At 16:00, you mention that you’ve never heard of a Volvo thermostat breaking, but in a video you made 7 years ago about this process (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJWzinyqrqxjoqsm55s at 4m 55s), you mention that Volvo thermostats break, too. Was the broken one in that video not actually a Volvo thermostat? EDIT: I see now. You’re saying that you’ve never heard of them breaking and *getting stuck closed*. That makes much more sense! My bad
@EscargotGaming

Also, at 4m 35s in that earlier video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJWzinyqrqxjoqsm35s), you mention that the thermostat should be oriented with the weep hole facing the front of the vehicle, but in this video, you install it facing the back. FCP’s video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2rQlH-oiNp3oMkm10s) says the orientation doesn’t matter. What do you think?
