POST YOUR EXPERTISE BELOW!!! Hey y’all!! So we haven’t cranked it up as of yet- we had someone message us and say we needed to fill the pump with water or some type of lubricant before we crank it! All the impeller fins have on them is dish soap! Should we take a hose off and put some water in there or are we ok!? TELL US, EXPERTS!!! 🙌🏼
@dnjsmith914 жыл бұрын
I just used dish soap when I installed it and hooked water hose and earmuffs when I did mine
@henrybaugh17154 жыл бұрын
Just dish soap is sufficient
@lar101014 жыл бұрын
Just put on the earmuffs, and run the water with good pressure. A little cold water should come from the discharge. Start the motor, and look for the discharge from the exhaust port to confirm the impeller is functioning. It should increase. Discharge water should be warm, not hot, and flow may increase with mild revving of the engine. Do not over rev, and don't put it in gear. Do you have temp gauge on the dash? Keep an eye on it, if so. Love the videos.
@trythistv4 жыл бұрын
You're fine, put muffs on and fire it up, check risers to see if they stay cool, and watch exhaust for water exiting. Your impeller didn't look that bad but was due for replacement, I've seen them where the fins were all gone and we've had to pull every line off and find them all else risk one blocking a passage. I use glycerin as an impeller installation lube as it is water based and won't attack rubber, certain "lubricants" of the Kentucky (KY) variety are glycerin, but dish soap works perfectly fine too.

A rule of thumb on boats is to have two hose clamps at every location. Redundancy is a good thing. It might keep the boat from sinking.
@johnhornsby96203 жыл бұрын
It's not for redundancy. It's USCG requirement to have double clamps.

Great videos. My best years, were those spent working with my dad, on our 35' Thompson cabin cruiser, wooden,. Sanding, painting, etc. My comment, a boat is a hole in water in which one pours money, it was a joke my dad said, it was not meant to poke fun at you all. My dad was a WWII veteran, was at the Battle of the Bulge and many engagements. He had a sense of humor, to help him thru tough situations. I do like your videos very much.

Most impellers come with a water soluble lube in a squeeze package ,to help with installation ,but more important to lube the rubber as it will be running dry on startup .Another good lube to use by many marine mechanics is KY jelly as it is water soluble and has more than one use...LOL
@Brenda-jf2pe3 жыл бұрын
Don't laugh but KY jelly works also , had a 26 Rinker with bravo and 454 it works as a lube ! It's very important to get the fingers on the impeller going in the right direction.

@@flyingsparksgarage Yeh haha, for something that should be a 1/2hr job, it's a real shame that more mechanics, with actual 'real world' experience, don't design things..everything would be too easy...I'm sure more and more nowadays it's young design engineers playing computer games designing stuff, with no hands on experience trying to repair what they design...Either it's their vengeance against mechanics for actually passing their practical exams (don't want to get their silk hands dirty or break a fingernail)...or they get a bonus for making things as difficult as possible, generating more profits for the manufacturers in labour charges due to the extended labour times required..lol...I guess if every job was easy, everyone would be doing it😂👍🇦🇺

Looks good to me, and those pumps will self prime, so I wouldn't worry about trying to prime it manually. Just don't wait forever to put it in the water as the soap can crystallize and dry out like glue after a while. If you are going to be in salt water make sure your zinc anodes are in good shape and haven't been painted over. They need yo be contacting bare metal underneath somewhere for current to pass through. Its also a good idea to check your outdrive for stray current when the engine is running with a volt meter. You'll need a chunk of silver to drop in the water on your probe. There are videos on here about how to do it if you don't know. Me trying to explain it here won't be as clear and straightforward as if you watch a video anyways. Good luck.

Hey guys..next time try pulling the two bolts that hold the pump bracket to the block...they are on the front next to the timing cover. Then pull the whole deal. On my boat (same pump, same thing.) I just use dish soap and gently slide the impeller into the housing at the same time turning the pulley gently in the right direction, no zip ties needed impeller blades lay over just fine. When reassembling, slide the pump into place as you slide the lower hose back on...gives you room to battle upper... Always use the fake-a-lake when firing out of the water, period. With fresh impeller put the muffs on and turn on the water, slowly, let it run a minute or two, then one of ya on the key and the other on the water valve, once she starts give more water right away. I have been doing this for 20 years or so and no failures so far...

@mikenicholson94654 жыл бұрын
I was afraid you were going to have a problem with that pump, in your first video you started the engine dry. Never run that pump dry. Put the impeller on the shaft and screw the housing over it. Orient the blades on the impeller the proper direction, a single motor should run clockwise, if not you could trash the impeller on start up. I am glad to see you got the new one piece housing also. Lubricate with a thin coat if water proof grease when installing. Very important, the inlet hose seals the whole lake from coming into your boat, do not take a chance on your hose clamps not being tight. Now you see why boat mechanics get $100.00 an hour. Lol Good job on your first bravo water pump impeller replacement!

Hi. Like your videos. I'm in the boat business and I wanted to point out an easy but very necessary fix. The sea strainer that connects to the water intake for your engine needs some fittings replaced. There are 2 plastic elbows on the inlet and outlet of the sea strainer. These need to be replaced with Bronze. The plastic elbows can crack and flood the boat. Make sure you replace those. Also clean your sea water strainer while you are at it. Make sure the ball valve is able to be closed and opened in case of emergency. It wouldn't hurt to replace the intake hoses from the ball valve to the strainer and on to the engine. They are over 20 years old and you don't want a failure there. If you need help with boat parts, I can help. I've been in the business a long time and must say that was a great buy. Bayliner haters go away! Also wondering if you made sure the replacement outdrive had the same gear ratio as the original. Was thinking about that after watching the madien voyage! Thanks!

I suspect, just like with a smaller outdrive with impellers in their lower unit, it is a HELL of a lot easier to install the impeller first onto the shaft. Then grease the impeller fins and housing, and then install the housing on the shaft while twisting the shaft (or perhaps the housing in this case) in the appropriate direction. No zip tie sorcery required.
