The crazy cabin project is officially beginning. This is me figuring out how to be a man alone in the woods. It's something I have dreamed of for a very long time and now that I have approval to build structures on this property, that's exactly what I'm doing... even if I don't know what I'm doing.
Let's go!

Get into the habit of emptying your duffle bag every time you get home or you'll end up having it half full of clothes you never wear... Make sure you secure your shed to the rock so wind won't just blow it off its "foundation". Use a masonary bit, a hammer drill and a anchor bolts to attach chain to the bedrock. Build everything with the hope of making it mouse proof, don't leave ANY open cracks. So what's great about your channel is that you're sharing your learning process and you're HONEST about it. No BS. No pretending. This allows us to get to know YOU and not some fake idea of a person.

I agree that I need to secure it to the rock. Doing so will be something completely new. Thanks for all the helpful ideas. Jay

Hello Jay, my only suggestion is that you make your walls taller than 6 foot on your shed, not sure how tall you are, but you will be bumping your head going in there, If i heard you correctly you will put a slanted roof on the shed, If you make the front of your shed 7 foot, and the back of your shed 6.5 feet, (2.13 Meters front to 1.98 meters back) then you will have more head room for you when you go inside, and not have to bend over. And you will have a 6 inch (1.524) pitch in your roof for water/snow to drop off. Thank you for your videos and still a little jealous, but love watching your content, thank you.

I just took down a shed that was built not high enough. Always hit my head when moving around inside of the shed. I made the new one extra tall and it is a joy to have the headroom.

Agreed, I had a low sloped roof shed and had nothing but hate in my heart for it. Definitely go a little higher, it makes project time so much nicer.

With the snow load your roof will have, you need a good pitch to shed the snow. If your going to use metal sheeting, at least 3:12. Also for the 2-3 feet of wet snow the roof could have on it (62lbs per sqft!!), you want a maximum of 18" between the roof boards.

I agree with going taller, and if you’re concerned about wanting to use that 6’ lumber you have, you can just make 6’ walls and add cripples onto them.

I do the same thing with russets! Excellent with hamburgs or steaks. Also do onion rings which are a treat camping. Looking forward to your camp improvement videos. Good luck, enjoy and read those comments my friend. 6’ walls are a tad short!

Hey Jay, when you are building something like the floor, or a deck, or whatever and you are working with material longer than your platform, just install it, snap a line, and rip the ends off all at once. Gives you straight lines and saves time cutting every board and lining them up

Was thinking the same thing! Saves lots of time, looks better with flush lines.

A little idea, last time I went to a Canadian National Park here in Quebec, they installed a pump in the lake that worked on a solar system (could be your generator or Jackery) to feed water to a sink and a shower. You just need to put a gray water filter to clean the waste before flushing it back in the nature. It would make your longer trip more enjoyable.

Once cured lots of fire wood. A good thing! Keep structure joints as tight as possible to keep vermin out. Angle your shed roof so rain water runs off down hill. This will keep all the water from running under your shed. It's gonna be a great adventure. Enjoy and be careful.

Only one suggestion that I can think of; the shed needs to be at least 7ft. You look to be at least 6ft so you want it at least 6-12inches above your height. Every time you go in or out you'll be hitting your head on the door post😂😂. Congratulations on your improvement approval Jay!!!! Thats exciting😁😁. I believe it will come together beautifully!!!! Tyfs God bless you

Hey Jay, Like others have said, make the shed a bit taller, you'll swear less. Definitely secure it to the rock somehow. But also, tip for the home made fries. Add some vinegar to the water, just a teaspoon or two for the amount you're cooking and soak them for at least an hour before cooking. As a fellow east coaster, think fish and chip joints growing up. this is what they do. You'll thank me later.

So excited about this new chapter in your life! We have been watching since your old tent - the time you could not get your snowmobile started, and we thought you were going to freeze to death! 😱 I would highly recommend getting a waterproof sheet to keep on your mattress at all times. Amazon sells one that does not make crinkle sounds and goes on just like a fitted sheet. This will keep droppings off of your mattress while you’re gone. The first time I spilled a drink on mine ,it paid for itself! 💦

Jay as a cabin owner myself in Newfoundland love the channel.I learned you can never have enough space, the 6x6 floor use as a outhouse dig hole place over top 8 foot walls a must you wont regret it. For storage I have 10x10 shed small window, small bench and built in shelves again you wont regret it you will fill that shed so fast and you will say to yourself I should have made it larger.

Hey Jay, it's great that you have your shed platform on rocks, as it will help keep the underside dry. I recommend you should treat the wood some how to further prevent water damage. Yes, if was me, I'd take off all the floor boards to treat the wood underneath, in order to keep the shed in great condition for ages!

Hey Jay, glad you got the go ahead for all your new building plans. Look forward to watching this channel each week. Wondering if you’ve given any thought to having a couple of solar panels to keep your Jackery charged. May not be a year long plan but in the summer it would reduce the amount of gas you have to bring out.

Congrats on getting your approvals! With the shed, you should still anchor it to the ground. Even if you just put a post in the front and back its going to prevent it from moving forward. Especially being on a hill. Also, when you build the roof, its already been mentioned, make sure you angle the roof with the hill side. Force the snow and rain in front of the shed rather than behind it. Water always wins.

Jay, two tips to help you. First as others have suggested your walls need to be higher. Here in the UK ply/OSB is sold in the metric equivalent of 8 x 4, so simply make back wall 8ft and give yourself a 15 degree run off; it will help with snow accumulation. Secondly remember snow is heavy - make sure your roof structure has plenty of joists eg 1 foot gaps. Make sure joists are tied in properly to wall frames, otherwise I am pretty certain you will get weather damage. For weatherproofing the roof use a rubber membrane. Easy to fit - there are plenty of videos - and it will outlast you. Dont buy the proper plastic trims. Just use treated roughshod timber and nail them in place. Good look pal.
