I review, breakdown and explain Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities Episode 6 'Dreams In The Witch House' on Netflix. I discuss the anthology series and react to moments such as Rupert Grint as Walter trying to bring Epperly back from the Forrest Of Lost Souls, Keziah Mason and Jenkins appearing in the Witch House along with Luke and Marianas discovery at the end of Jenkins crossing dimensions.

If it had been called something other than 'Dreams in the Witch House' then it would have a middling but somewhat entertaining story. But as a big fan of the original story I was very disappointed by this slipshod adaption. One of HPL's most mind bending cosmic horror tales reduced to this? No thanks. Watch the Stuart Gordon one. It has issues but at least it feels like he actually read the story.

I actually liked this episode. I think that the visuals and concepts were very interesting mingled with a lot of common sense mishaps that had me going “why would you do this?” And “why would anyone stay the night in a room visibly haunted with huge rat(s) and leaking roof?” But I think that it showed that not being able to make peace with the past and move on, can actually rob you of your own life and cloud your judgement so much so till you don’t realize that your obsessed. That’s what I see his journey as; an obsession that ultimately took his own life. And I liked the message (if you can call it that) and forgive me, but I like when he was taken over or possessed 😂😂. The rat was completely right; he wasn’t doing nothing with his own body so, he might as well had put it to some use. I liked to see the transformation from a crazed anxious guy to this skipping, stealing guy that he was at the end. You know he’s gonna get into a lot of trouble. The story was sad, but I didn’t expect any less and they delivered it well. Well done! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Very loosely based. The story for Pickman's Model started out similar and then went off in a completely different direction. Dreams in the Witch house never followed Lovecraft's original plot. They used the names and wrote their own story. Terrible!

the alchemical and hermetic allegory in all of these episodes, while expected going into it, has still blown me away. Seeing a John Dee mock up in the witchcraft book and then the Vitruvian man and overt quaternary symbolism was a nice touch on a story about the perils of the alchemists journey and how you can end up being used and at worst a possessed husk of yourself by your material and spiritual enemy in pursuit of noble goals. This show is truly Black Mirror of the spirit for the average hermetic or occult enthusiast.

Here's what I don't get...how could Jenkins be alive when his body is rotting by the witch? Only problem I had with this episode...you could argue & tell me it's the witch house but I'm not buying that excuse (he had to be a warlock or something right? Or was he a ghost rat that once entered the body he can be physically reborn?) Edit:Only reason why I like this episode is simple. Life after death is real & it made me cry when he finally got to see his sister in the forest.

As far as Lovecraft adaptations go from this anthology, I think this was the weakest. Rupert's performance was good but the creepiness factor went down after the little rat guy showed up, in my opinion. Lovecraft adaptations should always focus on vaguely described and shown terrors. This one felt more like dark fantasy than horror.
@frey8725
@frey8725 Жыл бұрын
These two "adaptation" weren't even Lovecraft's stories. They were completely rewritten with different plots. They were rewrites.

My least fav. I got the point about not being stuck in the past because his friend basically said it to him in the bar and his dead sister literally as him how comes he's not blowing up the bill boards with his music? But apart from that it did nothing for me. I really didnt feel the charactors, didnt feel the bond betwean him and his friend. Not sure wat purpose the artist served (she was literally painting dude, saw dude in the forrest and still didnt recognise dude till the last minute). I didnt get what was the rats connection to the witch but him taking his body and taking over his life was a creep moral for the story i guess 🤷🏻‍♂️ plus how his friend gonna just leave his body in a creepy witch house? Only shows what type of friend he was i guess

As someone knew to all these horror stories, this episode was the weakest, especially because there was no explanation for the 2 main supporting characters' motivations and existence. The rat of course, but what about the lady painter? why does the witch compel her to paint? why was she also in the other dimension? why does she paint in those weird triangular canvas? lol no sense. If you're going to adapt a story for mass consumption, you need to come up with creative ways to introduce those key aspects to the story.

Along with the Demon, Traveller and the Dark Church idol Maisson found all look similar and spare features with the mutant from The Viewing. Barely resembled Lovecraft or the title of the story which is "Dreams IN the Witch House" yet no dreams happen there until near the end. I think I would have liked this episode IF they had not called it "Dreams in the Witch House" and claimed it was based on Lovecrafts Story of the same name. It is among my top 3 Lovecraft Stories and literally everything that I would say Lovecrafts story was about, was taken out of the show and replaced with more "common" and "human" issues like love and death. These are good and fine topics, but when you expect a story about how grand and horrifyingly big and old and ultimately non-humane the universe is and how it is filled with creatures beyond our understanding and you expect to be chilled to the bone by realizing how small and insignificant you yourself are, then I am afraid it falls very flat.

Boring episode, and like its Lovecraftian counterpart episode Pickman, it leaves entirely too many questions unanswered. Rupert's acting was ace and perhaps the highlight of this episode although in some moments (like when he was paralyzed and rotated by the witch, etc, I just knew I was watching Ron Weasley, Weasleying all over again lol). Aside from Potter-head affection for this man as an actor, I don't feel this episode stands well on its own, for example, if the main character was played by someone else. Easily the weakest ep of the season. The nun was annoying, and I chuckled that after her dedicated life reciting prayers and such, it all suddenly escapes her and her best defense was to hold a cross and shout "GTFO of my church!" to the witch LOL. yeah, okay. Failed attempt at comedic relief, imo. Another thing, I wanted to yell at ol girl that kept repeating "mutually exclusive" like a parrot or broken record. We heard you the first three times, sis. The way that phrase was repeated you'd think it was more essential to the ending or plot, as a whole. It wasn't. AND another thing, the Spiritual committee was laughable in that they want funding to prove instances of the supernatural yet Rupert's character comes back with proof and a story worth investigating and dude is like, nah, you're crazy. Which, I accept the argument that he was dismissed because of drug use, but the same committee guy dismissed the painter/clairvoyant as well so it's like, what are you looking and/or expecting man? Everyone who's legit, this guy is dismissing, knowing that their funding is on the line if they don't produce something...legit! LOL

MEANING OF KAL EL IN HEBREW: Voice of God The suffix El means “of God” in Hebrew, with Kal-El defined as “Voice of God”. Before Krypton's doom, Kal-El's parents put him in a Moses-like basket, sending him down the Nile of intergalactic space until he landed safely on Earth. Superman may not necessarily be a direct representation of Jesus but it's definitely a Messianic figure so it's really dumb to not accept that. Snyder is literally treating the DC heroes as Modern Mythology. At least he's trying to do something interesting with those characters and not just saturate them with disney jokes.

This wasn't a Lovecraft adaptation. It was a rewrite with some of the same names. The plot is completely different and they even reversed Brown Jenkin's name for some reason and made it Jenkins Brown. wtf? I've seen a lot of people confused by "the rat"'s purpose. In the story, as it was explained, Brown Jenkins is the witch's familiar. I highly recommend anyone reading this, to not watch the episode and go read the story. It's a better plot and makes more sense. If you're not into actually reading Lovecraft, Masters of Horror did a better adaptation. They, at least, used the plot from the story.

It deviates so significantly from the style, content, and point of the original that one can only honestly say it was, at most, "inspired" by the story. On its own merits, it is...something one can watch with one's eyes.

It was okay, but y'know, just for once, I'd like to see a Lovecraft adaptation that actually sticks to the stories he wrote. Minus the racism, of course. Graveyard Rats was the best episode for me.

Horrible. One more horrible "adaptation" of Dreams of the Witch House to add to the list. No dreams in the Witch House (drug trip? please); Keziah was never dead, she dissappeared in front of everybody; Brown Jenkin had no explanation "for being there, just to cheer Balrog/Keziah up"; Gilman's motivations? omg, the guy was obsessed with KM story! I complain. Yes, I'm complaining because I'd like to see a GOOD adaptation of a Lovecraft tale sometime in my life. It's as if people conceive only one kind of horror, they don't seem to know the concept of Cosmic Horror. I'm tired, really, really tired. I had hopes for this having Guillermo del Toro's signature, but... =/

I'm right there with you, bud. This and Pickman's Model were ruined by rewriting the story. Pickman's Model started out similar and veered off in some weird direction. This one was a rewrite from the get go.

Wow this one was by far the worst episode so far. The dialogue was so corny and too on the nose. This episode had none of the intrigue of the first 5. I found myself zoning out 20 minutes in. It was just laughable at some points, like how was his ghost sister strong enough to pull the witch off of him? And of course it was in the perfect timing too right before the dagger pierced his eye. Not good ugh

I have no idea why they felt they needed to alter H.P. Lovecraft's masterpiece. Dreams in the Witch House is not only one of the best and horrific of his stories but is also one with enough content to Bring to the screen. I was extremely disappointed with everything about this episode. What huge led down.

Its one of lovecrafts weakest works, he wrote it when in need of money and tried a more popular approach using a witch, a haunted house and the witch being defeated by prayer, I think the adaptation its good enough for the story

Rupert carried this episode but the episode massively sucked - I hate shows with meandering storytelling where it is clear that they couldn't find a way to land a conclusive ending. Same problem with the first episode.

Can we just say that they did Rupert Grint a little dirty? Or essentially just another version of Ron’s character in Harry Potter… Chamber of Secrets having to save his sister Ginny from death / the death of Fred one of his twins brothers. THE TALKING RAT. smh 🤦‍♀️ Prisoner of Azkaban finding out Scabbers was actually Peter Pettigrew who helped bring Voldemort back to power.

That episode was weakest one. Absolutely agree about acting - very unconvincing. To the point that sometimes it felt like amateur theatrical play. Cinematography is great, but story and acting was all over the place.

The Dreams in the Witch House was written in January/February 1932 and first published in the July 1933 issue of Weird Tales and is a CLASSIC short story by H.P. Lovecraft. CLASSIC implies that it does not need to be "improved" by a lesser author. Whatever this miscarriaged, aborted, distorted aberration of the original story is truly a "Thing That Should Not Be." There have been multiple film adaptations to HPL's work over the decades and to be honest they have been overall disappointing. I thought Lovecraft Country had potential but that turned out to be a woke/white man bad nightmare. When I saw Guillermo del Toro was going to do HPL work I said "Finally, someone who can give HPL stories justice." While enjoying GDT visual effects the story was shit. What is is with people today thinking that it is ok to stray from the original source material, destroy it utterly and still call it by the original title? The most current example is Amazon's Rings of Power debacle. I encourage everyone who is disappointed with this story to let everyone know on social media, write Netflix, the author's website etc etc. Maybe if enough voices are raised that people will pay attention to the fans

They could've picked a better H.P. Lovecraft story to adapt like Shadows Over Innsmouth, Dagon, The Dunwich Horror, Nyarlathotep or The Dark Brotherhood to name a few. They did very poorly on this one.
