My late mother had a "hope chest" from the 50s...yellow blonde color veneer. I hated it. Guess who inherited it! Well, I decided to paint it with one of those antiquing kits popular at the time. I loved how it turned out. About 10 years go by. Suddenly I was like, you know, lets do it over. Some stripper, lots of elbow grease, and some walnut stain, and it was ready for it's next life. My point is that if someome changes their mind, it can be changed! Enjoy it, make it yours and use it! What a beautiful job you guys did- nice collab on the hardware- love it!

this is where you are very clever... i worked for my uncle back in the 80"s decorating.. what showed a professional decorator was an ability to adapt colour .. for the project.. my uncle was picked numerous times .. as he could LITERALY mix the colour .. in front of the client ..hence ... when i see you alter a colour or stain .. i have such respect for you .. .. you will never be out of work .. xx

Oh gosh Trena that is SO true. If someone can use a piece of furniture instead of trashing and buying new they is great! Sure preserving some old things is nice but USING things is the best! Thanks for encouraging that.

I am the customer and I know many of you prefer it stay in it's original state. I get it, my dad refinished it originally, however, we wouldn't have used it at all in our house as is (just our preference in style). We kept the original pieces that were removed. We did sell the rest of the set in an auction--and sadly antiques don't sell for much these days. We LOVE the updated version and have it showcased prominently in our main hall and it is used regularly. FYI for those who asked--the hardware came from Lee Valley.

If you want it purple with green spots then go for it. What is the point in having a piece of furniture and not using it as it doesn’t go with anything. You could have bought new and chucked this and just waste your money. Do want you want. By the way, looks great.

I'm usually one that making such drastic changes and alterations would take away from the beauty of the piece, but in this case I think everything you did made this piece 100% more beautiful. I loved the finish, the new hardware, and getting rid of the ornate backsplash. The owners have great taste and made some smart choices.

How true! I make original crocheted and knitted home decor. I gave up going to shows when so many customers wanted the unique, carefully thought out pillow with thick lovely yarn, a complicated cable design with a cotton linen back fastened with cedar buttons I made myself would argue with me because they wanted it for $20 insisting that they could get it at Winners for less! Because it appears that craft or artisanal work seems easy, people devalue it. When a potential customer said she could make my things for less, I suggested she go ahead. Then she wanted to know where I bought the yarn, the pattern I designed and how to make the tassels!!! Sheesh!

I love the tip to clear coat before painting so it could be refinished at a later date if someone wanted to. I wasn't so sure I'd like it "during" the work, but it was wonderful finished and really did fit that Mission style the customer was looking for. I am definitely in the camp of paint it if you will use it instead of getting rid of it and buying cheap modern furniture. Looking forward to watching more videos to get more ideas.

Greetings from the BIG SKY. The first piece of furniture I made was a copy of Charles Limbert's bookcase. Found the plans in a magazine (Popular Woodworking) in a closet in Whitehall, Mt. of a dead friend's brother. I made it out of pine first, then red oak. The doors where especially difficult for me to grasp. A very good learning experience for me. Not a bad bookcase either.

I suppose it’s to be expected that people who are drawn to a furniture restoration channel are going to value and appreciate antiques, so no shade on the customer’s taste. (Don’t tell my mom, but the china set she gave me sees the light of day when she visits.) The beauty of the wood still shows through, and the interior is a wonderful surprise. The next generation might want to restore the old look, and so it’s nice that the owners kept those hand-carved drawer pulls. Good job all around! 👍
