Cable Basics - Solid vs Stranded Cable

Might be a silly question, but is stranded wire diameter bigger than solid wire? In a PCB in designed there are two 20AWG holes for the power wires but the stranded wire I have, which is marked as 20AWG only fit holes the size of 18AWG (1 millimeter) and that is without pre-tinning, at the same time a battery holder with stranded 24AWG wire fit perfectly in the 20AWG hole...

That might be the case. I came across this passage while searching... "Stranded wire has a bigger overall diameter than solid wire due to the air trapped between strands and a correspondingly larger insulation diameter needed to cover the wire."
