Cable Railing System for the Off-Grid Treehouse | Ep. 12

We left off last week with cutting, burning and installing all the posts for the railings on the platform. So naturally, the next step would be to get the railings in.... but not so fast. The platform has a bit of a smiling issue. Some may call it a sag, but we like smile better. 🙂 And while we love a good smile.. it's NOT so good when it's on your platform.
So before we got the railing installed, we had to come up with a temporary solution to make sure that everything is level, plumb and square. And yes, we use those terms loosely since we're dealing with a bunch of chainsaw milled timber, suspended 9 feet up in the air and swaying in the wind. But hey, we're doing our best!
So then it was time to get to work on the railings, which was something that.... you guessed it.... we've never done before.
The weather was mostly cooperating and we had a LOT of fun doing it! Installation took us about 2 days to complete since the kids have kept us busy with track practices and meets and their first school dance!
We did get it finished and we'd 10/10 recommend this railing system to anyone. From the installation, to the cost, and of course the look of it. It was exactly what envisioned for the treehouse!
And that wraps up another week and one step closer to a one of a kind treehouse getaway, right here in our back yard.

I'm with everyone else, leave them silver. The three colors makes it "Pop". Sorry it took so long for me to respond back from your previous response to my last comment. It may have been more than 4 years ago for me but I still have my 'Ups' and 'Downs'. I still feel her loss as much as it was when it happened. So, I will always have my moments when a song just gets me or a movie instance gets my teary eyed. Btw her name was Scotch. We were almost married for 17 years. She would have loved watching you two while you two build and joke around with each other. I had to move away from my hometown of Houston mainly because of the fact that everywhere I looked I saw her. I did leave my main support back there, my parents and such, but I had to get away. So I moved to Colorado to get some mountain air and new scenery. I have been here for almost a year now and I love the new scenery and the cooler weather. Another great one guys!!! Who knew they made a setup for installing a cable railing system like this?! Probably everybody(lol) In the past when installing cable like this I used eye hooked lag screws or adjustable lag bolts to hold the tension...especially on things like an outside clothes line frame but you guys killed and it looks sooo good!!! One of your cones dropping in to see what you're doin' in the 🌲today. Hi Jenna and Ted, great to spend some time with you again today. There was so much going on in this video. I absolutely loved the various lake scenes; especially when there was no wind and it was like glass. Absolutely stunning. You sure have some fabulous property there, absolutly beautiful. The dog scenes were likewise very nice to see what they were up to. Another very nice job on the vid Jenna, thank you. We have certainly been blessed with a beautiful chunk of land to call home. Thank you, it is a dove with a "D" on it for David (my dad). It was a gift from my best friend when my dad passed away. The kids are certainly growing up so darn fast! And yes, Finley is very competitive! She was racing against mostly all girls so we're excited to see her run in her first JV meet! Man, those look great! I think Jayme and I may have to steal your idea and do this to our railings. I now have the perfect video to watch 😄 I really like the current color; it adds a nice contrast to the blackened posts. However, black would also look good - that's a tough call. It really did turn out so nice! We would 100% recommend doing this cable system! We do like how the silver looks right now, but we feel like the black would look really good as well! But it just makes sense to not add any additional maintenance to our never-ending to do list! 🫣😂 So we recommend if you’re gonna go black, just to buy the Black hardware! We didn’t know that the Black hardware even existed until we had already purchased the silver stuff! The cables do really blend right in, even though they are silver. It is such an unobstructed view! And the view that you guys have on your treehouse is 100 times better than ours! 🤣 We are super excited for the weather to turn nice and you guys can hopefully get out to work on yours as well! Yes the kids took us by surprise when we saw them all dressed up! Like whoa, how did you grow up so fast!?!?!?! 🥹 Love the Thomas Edison quote! He was certainly right about that! Well THIS is one happy "Pine Nut" because we get yet another great video. IMO would leave the cables as they are. It gives a nice contrast to the whole look. Besides, you can always go back and paint them if you change your mind down the road. You could put some small split black tubing on one section just to see if you like that color better. Just a thought. I love how it looks either way. And yes, I shared the video. Can't wait to see you all in August.
