Grocery haul after a 200 Mile Trip to the Vet! Poor Kenai

My boy, okay... my pup has been ill and requires a trip into town to see the vet. Only thing is town is 200 miles away. Might as well make the most of the situation and hit Costco, New Sagaya Market, and Fred Meyers while there. And once home, I will show you my "new" 114-year-old refrigerator curtesy of Bohn Syphon. And finish off the day with a nice hot bowl of gumbo! Yum!

The version of gumbo that I share is not 100% traditional, but that is the real beauty of gumbo. Gumbo is a dish with many variations and take on the dish. My version does not start off with a roux and contains red beans, however, unlike an authentic red bean gumbo, I do not puree them into the broth, nor am I using ham in the dish. Nonetheless it is one of my favorite meals. I hope you enjoy it too should you try it, or use this recipe to experiment and make your own special version of gumbo,
Gumbo
2 cups of white rice - cooked per package directions.
2-3 cups of chicken stock or 1 1/2 tsp chicken bouillon & enough water to cover the contents of the dish
2 andouille sausage links, or Louisiana style hot links - sliced in to rounds
1/2 - 3/4 cup of shredded chicken
6-8 shrimp- peeled and deveined
1 green pepper - diced
1 stock of celery - diced
1/2 an onion (or in my case I am using the whites of one leek) diced
2 cups of okra (this will be the thickening agent) (If not a huge fan of okra, then I suggest making a roux of butter and flour browned in the pan before cooking your vegetables.)
Spices to taste: Cayanne, Smoke Paprika, thyme, oregano, salt and black pepper, 1/2 tsp of Worcestershire sauce. For added flavor add a dash or two of tabasco sauce or your favorite Louisiana style hot sauce.
2 TBS butter
Start by either making a roux as explained earlier or melting the butter in a large pot. Add your chopped vegetables (but not the okra yet) and cook until tender and the onions and celery become translucent. Then add your stock or bouillon and water. Then add your meats and spices. And finally add the okra. Let simmer until everything is heated through and cooked fully. The okra should help to thicken up the dish slightly, but it won't be as thick as say a gravy is. and then serve over your rice and enjoy. And again, my apologies to any purest of gumbo out there.... I just don't eat a lot of flour. 😉

Miss Alaska. Thanks for the videos. Don’t waste your time, putting the stone down on your parking area and driveway. Without having a contractor come in with A transit so he can check the grade of your property and the machine to grade and raise the elevation on the parking area and driveway first. If he uses the transit, he can divert the water to go in the direction it needs to go on to the lowest portion of your property. If you spend the money to put stone down on the area that you have now, the stone will just eventually sink into the mud. when I have time, I will send you an email with lots of information on making your cabin, more fire resistant to forest fires, and I also have quite a bit of knowledge on John Deere tractors, keep that doggie, smiling

You are absolutely right, unless you get someone who knows how to divert the water and install the stone correctly you will spend a lot of money for little return.

Depends on what you have under the surface. I have about 6 ft of clay then gravel and sand, so I dug out a large 100 ft by 20 ft 30 ft deep pit and stacked the clay one place stacked the sand and gravel another then proceeded to fill the hole with clay , and put the gravel and sand where I wanted to have a dry area. did this process twice, now I have two areas with a clay bottom for my garden area, and then 6X as much area with gravel and sand down to bedrock. took about 4-5 days of work with a tracked excavator and a skilled operator. The "pad" that I had a contractor put in, all they did was remove the duff put typar cloth over the clay then brought in 20 dump trucks of gravel, and leveled it off. This produced an area that will have flooding in the spring, so I added more gravel and sand so it drains to the side where I have no clay.

I was raised on food seasoned with garlic powder and hated it. When I went out on my own and discovered fresh garlic and how to cook, I use I it to flavor my food religiously. I cannot imagine life without fresh garlic and onions, either, and both are so healthy.

Hi ALONE! Yeah, seeing the driveway, there from last year. I'd lay more large rock but at a 16th degree slope down on both sides driveway going out away on tbe sides draining into the wooded area, away from both your drive and your parking driveway areas. At a slope going outwards the water would run off that way, away from your Ling drive and parking driveway better. Hopefully you can get it asphalted one day with a slight slope for drainage. But rock will do same if there's a slope for the water to drain from. So good to see you again!

It's been a game changer when i found that you could freeze coffee creamer, just remove a couple of inches of cream to allow for expansion..i now only have to drive to town for groceries once ever six weeks.

Great video! The magnesium ammonium phosphate is another name for a bladder or kidney stone caused by high oxalates in the diet. My elderly cat suffered a similar problem. Someone else probably already said something, but just wanted you to know 🙂

My husband is allergic to onions and peppers. I can use dried minced onions and he has no problem and I can use regular black pepper. When we got together I had to change my way of cooking because I used onion and pepper in just about everything I cooked lol.

South Louisiana here. There are as many gumbo recipes here as there are kitchens. Plus it can be used to use up leftovers. So you do you. It looked delicious.

Glad Kenai is on the mend.. it was so cute when in the car your conversation with him and the subtitles..lol. I am a Louisiana Gal… nearly all gumbos are made with a Roux .. equal parts oil and flour that is browned makes the base for the gumbo then the onions celery andbel peppers are added (holy trinity ) broth or water added along meats/seafood combination .There is gumbo made with just a lot of okra..all the seasoning..tomatoes ..meats and /or seafood

Meat priced pretty close to iowa prices ,your just a few dollars higher but not bad ,buying in bulk does help freeze them ,but i split up the stuff and vacuum seal it helps with space and gets the air out no freezer burn easier to organize.

The cost of groceries is unbelievable! I've been gradually implementing a permaculture food forest, garden bed areas, and a greenhouse, but even so I can barely stay ahead of rising costs. Dollar-cost averaging obviously helps -- buying ahead is like money in the bank.

My husband took our Dutch oven w/out the lid, seasoned the roast, placed it IN the firebox w coals around it .. smoking it, turning it once.. and then lid on for maybe 1/2 hour.. Oooo smoked meat GOODness!!
