That thermal pad apart from being a heat transfer medium is a good way to insulate the PCB to metal plate.

The spec of the port is part of the problem. Having one clip point will always allow it to pivot unless there are super tight tolerances.

Yeah for me it's pretty damn easy to get rid of the side wiggling issue, just made two latches, one closer to each end.

Then the answer doesn't change because it must be a tolerance issue. Prior to the 12vhp SNAFFU, I'd put together a number of PCs. Never once have I had a 24 pin, 4 pin, 6 pin or 8 pin pivot nearly enough to cause a connection issue. MOLEX sure, but that had so much contact area for so little power, movement was a nonissue. Ditto for fan pins. NVIDIA seriously cannot be stupid enough to think they can eat for free. If you want to ram this much power through this little space, you've got to compromise elsewhere to make it happen. LIKE, for example, precious manufacturing costs.

@@williamking9707 Agreed. This is an oversight by Nvidia specing the port. Perhaps they were worried about power supply connector compatibility. Either that or they're lazy. At this point, the power draw from a 4090 alone exceeds that of the rest of the computer. They really could and should have created a completely new cable and connector.

@@InquisitorEuro I harshly disagree with dismissing the fault as just user error, and a "low" failure rate. Further, deflecting the blame onto PCI just makes me want to expand my point. The GPU is comparable or exceeding the remainder of the system in many categories. Categories such as power consumption, cooling demands, cost, complexity. The trend seems to shift towards GPU side expansion. Continuing to think of a graphics card as a "peripheral component" will eventually be inappropriate. I understand what I suggest here is a drastic (expensive) change. Still, someone really should have started to think about it when the graphics cards started to sag. It was physically too much for the PCIe connector to bare.

Who knew a 16 pin connector on a product that sits away from the motherboard and drawgs up to 600w would be a dumb ass idea other than almost all the computer community. Making 8 pin connectors backwards compatible and able to draw twice as much energy? Jay I feel as an automotive tech for 40 years the in and out movement of any plug is inevitable. Manufactures have to leave enough tolerance for inconsistencies in different manufacturers Evan automotive plugs have in/ out clearance to allow for removal and installation. Even high amp EV connections have some level of movement. I do think that Cable Mod''s v1 was maybe too loose but v2 is a great improvement.

The 24 pin motherboard connector and cable has no wiggle room and sits so fucking stuck in pretty much every motherboard I've ever tried that you almost feel like you're going to break it when you want to remove it. So there are connectors in computers that do not wiggle. There's no good reason why a €2000 GPU can not have a properly designed connector.

I've had one for almost a year, using cablemod cables - no angled adaptor. Still no melting, just cleaned the case a week ago and checked for a great meltdown! Luckily there was none. 😀

A small piece of electric tape on the inside slope of the latch removes the play. Ever layer of tape is roughly .3mm.

@@churro6160 It works on many things had to do it on a riser cable. Electric tape is useful because not only is safe for electronics but also stretches. Allowing multiple layers to be cleanly stacked by using larger strips pulled tightly & trimming with a razor blade. A compression non conductive shim is rather useful.

I was looking at the adaptor back about 4 months when I built my new system. I was so worried about my 4090 melting after reading about all of this. I figured that adding another point of resistance would be a bad idea. I have been using the connector that came with my be quiet power supply. I can say that it fits snugly. I do check it from time to time and so far it has stayed in place. I did put a gradual curve in it in order to route the wire. I was extremely careful when doing so to make sure I was not putting any stress on the pins. So far so good.

CableMod really deserves some appreciation for going after this problem - I really doubt they're making money on these given the state of the situation at the moment. Hopefully this v1.1 is a "good enough" to improve on the issues with v1 for now and the v2 will really have this issue solved(or at least band-aided nicely and effectively, since the problem with the spec SHOULD be getting solved with an updated spec, not via aftermarket fixes).

Hey Jay. There's another point of failure no ones mentioned. All the stress on the solder joints between the adaptor plug & it's PCB. Any movement of the adapter is going to transfer directly through the plug solder joints to the small PCB. I feel there should be someway of securing the adapter plug (plastic moulding) to the PCB to prevent potential stress fractures in the solder joints. Any fractures there will present as an electrical resistance, which would cause heat buildup on the pins thus melting the adapters. Basically, the adapter PCB needs to be wider to accommodate a physical way to secure the plug to it, allowing thesolder joints to be just electrical connections & NOT a physical means of attachment. That is what happened to mine! I didnt have any play in my original apdater and it was hard as hell to push all the way in. It eventually heated up and got really hot. I caught it before it got too serious and warrantied my gpu and adapter. Lucky for me from what I am hearing I got a new 4090 strix in the box but it took 3 months of bitching.

Had a V1 90 degree adapter that melted on my TUF 4090 a couple months back. Asus denied RMA but CableMod to be fair were excellent, paid for full connector repair and shipping costs but obviously I was without a GPU for a week or so. Feel bad for CableMod as its ultimately Nvidia's poor design on the power connector that is behind all this, it must be costing them a fortune. CableMod stand by their customers though, I can personally vouch for that. They have also shipped me a V1.1 adapter free of charge, although I'm not sure if I will risk using that tbh

Damn that happened to me but asus covered 100 percent of the RMA on my strix. They sent me a scratched and dented GPU and I bitched and returned it. They sent me the exact same gpu from the RMA center back and I bitched harder and returned it. Asus finally sent my a new 4090 strix in the box. The whole process took almost 3 months.

The v1 adapter just melted into my 4090 TUF OC. There was no gap between the connector and the card on any side. It was so firmly connected, that I could not fit a screwdriver (a tiny one that I put on a grinding wheel to make extra thin) between the adapter and the connector on my graphics card. I had to use needle nose pliers to remove the Cablemod adapter from the GPU, and that left the melted plastic from the adapter in the GPU's connector.

One of v1.1 upgrades is actually the 12v2x6 connector, which will shut off the power (or not start up at all ) if the cable isn't properly inserted.

To add some kudos to CableMod. I bought the v1 from them direct and they emailed me with a code to get new v1.1 when it came out from them for free. I am awaiting it's arrival. That being said I have had no issues with the v1 (180 degree) adapter on my vertically mounted Zotac Trinity 4090 OC.

No take it off. Definitely discontinue use of the v1 as soon as you can. I promise you, it will avoid catastrophe. Had mine pushed in all the way. Was super anal about it in fact and my GPU was still fried. It just adds another bad point of failure in an already big problem.

All NVIDIA power plugs should come with dual thumbscrew on either side of the plug, much like an old VGA adapter. The single plastic latch setup is grossly inadequate for the potential power loads. Shame on NVIDIA for their poor product design.

You don't need that much. All you need is to ensure that every single position that the plug can be while latched is safe. Because vibrations of your PC will move that plug all around. Screws will give very little wiggle, but a ton of wiggle is still fine as long as all of those positions are safe. In this spec they are not.

Dunno about other power supply manufacturers, but I was lucky to have Corsair just make their own 12VHPWR cable that is super flexible and runs straight from the PSU to the video card. No nuclear meltdown yet, so it seems to be working.

The problems with the 12VHPWR connector is by spec is it is the same as using both 8-pin outputs on a single PSU cable, which everyone recommends not to do. The other problem is Nvidia's fault in violating the spec on the connector. The connector is only rated to 9 amps per cable, but the card regulates to 50 amps combined, which means losing 1 circuit causes the others operate over spec.

lets just hope nvidia places those connectors better on the next gen. meaning if you lay the card down on the backside, fans facing up, the connectors also face up. that way, in standard mounting position, the connector and cable will face down by default, no adapter needed. even better would be if the whole industry ditches the bad connector completly. the connector needs 2 retention clips on the short sides instead of the one it has now.

I think it's time for power connectors to be fit on the back side of the PCB angled away from the PCI bracket, or towards the PCI-E slot. Only need a cut out on the back plate for stock coolers, Waterblocks dont need to account for the large connectors and it just looks far cleaner. (Invisible when vertical mount, and flush with a horizontal mount)

I had the V1 adapter on my 4080 and when I installed it, I made sure that it was seated fully in, made even sure that the cable connected to it didn't pull on it in any way. It all was well until after about 3 month of usage I started getting black screens when I was running a game. At first I thought it was something wrong with one of my components, as it was a new build. But after a while I thought that the easiest way of troubleshooting was to run without the adapter and after I removed it I no longer got any crashes. It was then that I inspected the adapter and noticed that it had signs of the plastic melting (and even evidence that it had melted parts of the contact on my GPU which had then fused with the adapter). It was only then that I started researching and saw all those Reddit posts and other forum posts about this adapter failing, sometimes with terminal damage to the contact on the GPU. So this isn't just about the contact being loose. This is (or was) an issue with how cablemod had designed this adapter. You might say that since it hasn't happened to you, then it's still a good product, but the bottom line is still that if a company is designing such a product like this, to be used with these modern super expensive GPUs, that it's beyond acceptance to use a product that can cause such a critical failure to said component.

Hey Jay, If you place a scale underneath the GPU and zero it before pushing in the cable adapter, that should show you the amount of force it takes to seat the pins. Install a few time and get an average.

Mine melted with the adapter stuck into the gpu, fortunately gigabyte appears to be replacing it (on the contrary to what everyone told me on my Reddit thread I made) (receiving it in the mail tomorrow) Only time will tell though, I’m definitely going to have a hard time playing games without frequently checking on the connector from now on.

I would rather have the wiggle happen in the interface between the connector and solder in the cablemod than in the two connectors mating. In fact, strain relief is usually coupled with a specific area where you want to take up any wiggle so it happens on a controlled area where it does no harm.

My v1.1 is already in the mail, on the way. I’ve been using the 90° cable for a while. The whole cable one piece, has the 90° element built-in. Every couple months I’ll get this thing where the display goes black and all of the 4090 fans go to 100%, I have to restart the computer, re-seat the power cable, then it’s good for another couple months.

They should have just used (2) 8ga wires going to the GPU using an XT90 type connector like RC cars use...My truck handles 3 Lipos that are 21.6v total and they can deliver 260 amps EACH in SUDDEN bursts with zero issues and would make cabling cleaner and cheaper, plus less points for failure, and 90* ends are readily available and cheap

It amazes me to watch all you experienced pc enthusiast plug in a plastic plug with metal hollow pins and wiggle the hell out of it then unplug and plug back in while wiggling the hell out of it even more only to have your viewers feel that this is okay then complain when they have heat buildup in a connection that spread the hollow pins open due to them causing fatigue by doing so. I have the original v1 from day 1 launch back at the end of February on my 4090 Suprim X. The last thing I did when building this PC was plug in the adapter then my custom Cablemod cable and have not touched it since. I have a modified bios that allows it to hit the full 600watt limit with overclocks reaching well over 3k MHz. Have had no issues with it.

I love that Cable Mod does stand behind their products and even going out of their way to replace GPU's because it's not something they have to do especially if may not be their fault. I've been running a 3x 8 pin Cable Mod extension adapter on my Zotac 4090 Airo Extreme connected to a Corsair AX1600i PSU, installed in a Phanteks Evolv X case since the GPU launched. The card has been running 24/7 with what must be at least 1000+ hours at load by now as well as all those thousands of hours running idle and the GPU has been perfect. Was going to replace it early on with a 4x 8 pin but the Cable Mod ones can pull the full 600w over 2x 8 pins so 3x 8 pins is fine. Did check the temp of the connector at load for a while when I first installed it and the conector temp was always pretty cool. I still hate the connector though, it's not a great design whatsoever.

Ive had my 4090 since 10/23/22 with a direct Cablemod 12vhpwr into 4 pcie psu cable and haven't had any issues with it mounted vertically. Just gotta make sure its plugged in all the way and don't wiggle it while its on.

I believe that the pins in the sideband connector are also shorter, are they not? The idea being that, if the plug is pulled out slightly, it breaks the connection & cuts off the power. I read that, that is the updated spec. of the 12VHPR. Perhaps they aren't implementing that until the V2.???

It is possible that if they reduced the height of the connector and increased the Z depth of the adapter so that it if flush with the top of the gpu that the flexion can be drastically reduced. Of course, they will have to modify the adapter to include an extended push rod with a small button tab, as the push tab on the connector would be inaccessible. Also, a thin rubber pad at the bottom of the adapter could reduce any friction/vibrations from the contact of the adapter against the gpu. This would reduce/eliminate flexion and also make it easier to remove the adapter. I know that specific heights would be needed due to different depths/heights of different gpu manufacturers, but I am sure that a solution can be found for this small detail. If you would like a visual diagram of my idea, let me know. I could send you a rough sketch that you could pass on to Cable Mods. Great video as always, Jay. Keep up the great work!

Literally just had my v1.0 adapter melt on my 4090 yesterday, with the v1.1 in the mail probably arriving in the next few days. And I had also been very diligent about pressing it in hard, not putting strain on it, and had FPS limiter on my drivers etc.

The replacement was not exactly "for free", they sent a coupon code, which only applies to the cost of the adapter - not S&H, and then they initially sent it in a way that looked like your average marketing spam coupon so I ignored it until I saw GN reporting on it and wondered what email I had supposedly received. And then the adapter was late multiple times from the announced dates too of course, so much that it was only the last day of the validity of the coupon when I noticed them finally being available for order.

I believe a new spec for that plug came out where the pins and connectors connect deeper and have more leverage to "user error" and a better snap lock. They are backwards compatible but all new GPUs should be using this new plug. So you could still have burn outs even with the new plug on a old plug.

They failed to fix the actual root cause of the problem and that is the overall design which is fatally flawed The ONLY solution is a complete redesign and the longer they hold it off then the more expensive it will be to the manufacturers and customers because there will be so much faulty stock out there and the new connectors won't work on older cards. They should have immediately nipped this in the bud and redesigned the connector months ago and in the very least already have a redesigned connector in place and ready for the next generation. Right now it's just a problem with the 4090's but over time and wear and tear it's eventually going to affect 4080's and possibly even 4070 Ti's. Resistance problems (which is the root cause of the overheating) don't just go away but become worse over time and eventually that resistance will grow to cause overheating at even lower wattage levels.

Any additional connection point to recipient add power loss and as it comes power draw (regrdless to low resistance of connectors pair). So any loose connects will be damaged.

Cablemod and other manufacturers should make a spring loaded adapter to prevent wiggling and loss of connection due to the heat when it’s under load. That’s what we use in some ehv terminations to have the best contact possible.

I just put one these (v1.1) on my new build with a 4090. Its definitely a tight fit and doesn't move once seated correctly. I'm pretty confident in this design.

I don't know how tight tolerances for molding and manufacturing a part like this are but the out-of-my-arse feeling is that we are about as close as possible to the optimal solution here, given the current limitations of the spec. The specifications of the socket itself are now the limiting factor and that isn't going to change before at least a new product line-up gets released, if even then. This is by far not the first socket or wire that has - shall we say - incongruities in it's performance, and it won't be the last. The stupidity of the thing seems to culminate on the simplicity of it and the fact that we are talking about an increased risk of damage to some very expensive products.

The clip is not the issue, this is the spec of the connector stated in the pcie 5 spec. However, this has now been fixed in the 12v-2x6 connector which is a change on the GPU side connector and not the cable end. So only new GPUs will see the fix and the connector on the cable will not change. Apart from a H++ stamp instead of H+

No issues on my ASUS ROG STRIX with CableMod adapter, Been 8 months so if something would of happened it would have already done so. Great company to back up their product and I will support them, I feel sorry for them having to cover costs when it isn't really their fault but an engineering one for the plug specification itself.

they issued me two coupons for replacement a while ago with a deadline of the end of september. in the coupon it said replace with the new improved 90 cable (due 4-6 weeks) or the new improved adapter. i waited until the very end because the new improved 90 cable NEVER came out, and i had to use it or lose it because the deadline was approaching. also one of my coupons came back as invalid, so i only ended up with a single revised adapter instead of the improved 90 cable like i really wanted. pretty big let down there. the original v1 180 adapter is sitting in my 4090 at a 20 degree angle as the updated replacement STILL hasn't come in. i think i'll be moving on from cablemod after this.

Some things just need to be built out of better materials (metal) than others. Most all need to have stricter tolerances required by good engineering. Most people will pay for quality when needed but hate paying high prices for crap.

Molex requires the "wiggle" the pins are designed to be self aligning. If you read a Molex spec sheet you will see that the pins and connected wires must have some independent movement. There's a spec for the loose, non-wrapped wire going into the connector, to allow each terminal to move independently.

A bit of shortening of the retention clip's length will solve this problem it's an easy fix it should only click when the connector is all the way in. And a bit of redesign is required for the connector to stop wobbling like 2 plastic standoffs that go through the board to stop side ways movement.

IDK about the second version, but there adapters failed more than the regular cable. one of my friends had the problem and cable mod never did anything to get his GPU fixed or replaced, its good that the PCB ad the Die do not get damaged by this "User error", he got it fixed with a new 16pin plug and never had the problem again, he swore to never buy Cable mod products again, while i have a cable mod 16pin to 4 8pin cable and i have thermal paste in it (mistake while changing the CPU cooler) and still keeping up strong.

I've been using the "Thermal Grizzly - WireView - 1x12 VHPWR Normal" on my 4090 Suprim X liquid cooled. It fits very well, gives tactile feedback indicating full seating and exhibits no slop/wobble whatsoever. I've used the OCCT power stress test for extended periods with out issue (during which WireView displayed ~525W). It has no discernible effect on the card performance. It is a bit fiddly to remove but I have no reason to remove it. The CableMod adapter is a bit less expensive than the WireView but the latter is not just a connector.

They didnt. BUT CM took it upon themselves to repair replace cards that did melt while using their adapter. Nvidia and most manufacturers where putting the issue up to "human error" as opposed to the absolute shit design that the 12VHPWR connector is. Instead of going "Hey we didnt realize how easy this would end up getting bent and pull out so we will provide some support" it was "Fuck you we already have your money". Then CM tried to help with their connector but those where still, and even the V1.1 still, issues cause the design for the 12VHPWR standard has too much variance allowed. So CM decided to take the financial hit but the PR gain of paying to repair or replace cards. When aftermarket companies support a product better then the ACTUAL MANUFACTURERS.

I'm so happy that CableMod didn't ship to my location when i bought my 4090, ended up buying the Corsair Premium 12VHPWR cable for my PSU instead. I still check that the cable is snug and i monitor the voltage as well.

I am sure someone else has pointed this out, but you keep using the same 4090, I am sure by this point you have opened up the plastic part of the connect just from the moving, jiggling, and repeated plugging and unplugging of different fitments. At this point, I feel like you are going to be getting extra movement anyways. That being said, it was clear you needed a lot more force to get the plug to pull outward than in the other Cable Mod plug.

My guess is that they are now using the newly ratified 12vhp connector, thus seating a bit more firmly in the socket itself... however this "wiggliness", i don't think that this didn't make it onto the critical issues list. Edit: they shortened something from the original to hamper this type of issue iirc

I wish they (CableMod) would make cables with 90 degree connectors. That would eliminate a bit of the issue with the movement. Also, there'd be no reason to have a PCB in it since it'd just be wires going into a 90 degree connector, not an adapter.

I really don't see how on earth it is more beneficial to add more possible points of failure. I have a 4090 with Corsair HX1500i PSU and original Corsair Premium Individually Sleeved 12VHPWR cable and it is so tight it is even hard to get out normally as it shoul be.

Watch some videos, find posts or videos of your exact “desired” componets in synergy/action - pros/cons. I was literally picking my parts in timespan of weeks to be sure.

I would say to just get a direct replaclement cable for the 4090 from them. I received mine last week and it fits SUPER snug without any play and matches the rest of my cables. Odd that one fits like a glove yet the newer ones here still had some snag

someones V1's adapter melted on their 4080 a day or 2 ago. I saw it on reddit. They titled the reddit post as "cablemod cable" but they commented and said "edit: its the adapter not the cable" so yeah. They're still melting 4080's, just not EVEN CLOSE to as how many 4090's have melted. I see another melted 4090 every 1-2 weeks. its crazy. IF YOU SEE THIS COMMENT AND HAVE A V1 ADAPTER IN YOUR 4080 OR 4090, ESPECIALLY THE 4090, TAKE IT OUT AND THEY WILL REPLACE IT

The newer v1.1 is "free" only for the adapter itself, but they still charge you shipping. Not sure why the consumer has to bear additional shipping cost for a faulty product. Should be free, literally, including the product and shipping.

Some give in a system is good. rigid systems break, Also for it to fit perfect it would need to assume every plug was perfect and the spec probably has some variance so more plugs will fit to sockets without failing because a not quite clipped connector is worse that full clipped with small give. Does the connection stay high-quality and that can't be measured by "wiggling" stuff on video. The problem is how do you know if you got a card with the updated spec which is both connector and behavior on a loose connection.

I had the v1.0 180 adapter (variant B) on my ASUS TUF 4090, which just cooked off two weeks ago (after three months of no issues), fusing the CB adapter to the power plug - which was fully seated and now welded in place as proof of proper installation. Waiting to see if ASUS will void my warranty. CB already said they will cover my repair cost after reviewing the pics I sent if ASUS stiffs me.

It should be said that there are a fair few people on Reddit not happy at paying a pretty hefty postage charge on the "free" replacement. $20 postage probably does feel like a bit of a kick in the teeth in fairness. In addition, CM revealing a V2 is on the way probably doesnt install massive confidence either. I would guess it's going to have a display of some sort plus other improvements. Anyway, all this isn't to say that Nvidia have exactly handled this well either.

I just got the 4080 Super FE model and still using my V1.0 mod cable 180 angled adapter. It does get quite hot but I don't think the 4080s and lower are really affected anyway? Also my adapter doesn't wiggle at all and it doesnt move in or out at all either it's very very tight. Just gets really hot like the same heat as the entire gpu metal body.

Side comment (off topic) this is the issue we are seeing with USB C on laptops. Mostly Dell, but also on other brands, but we mostly use Dells per contract. 😔 You can see on USB A the adapters don't fully seat, but the design is better than USB C. We have laptop displays going black, and users think laptop turned off. Docking stations loosing connectivity. Charging not working, in some cases USB hub/port gets disabled to avoid over voltage. I've also seen issues on other devices, but without an expensive cable tester, cannot blame USB C design, could be manufacturing issues of the actual cables. As Jay said thicker sides (fill side gaps) to stop the wiggling. Same can be done for USB, thicker metal connectors (fill the gaps). Also, pinch tabs for the video card adapters going forward. Should solve a lot of problems. 5:33 still frame is my inspiration! 😊 Now the power connector is probably a sourced part, not made by Nvidia. But as the customer they can probably get the vendor to make design revisions, and start a revolution! 😊 That's just my two pesos!😮
