All those sounds. Takes me right back to when driving these and the other 400s. What a shame they've nearly all been scrapped, even 5001, that lot at Gwent were something else. Recall those nasty Notworkers coming in, thank heavens Chris Green's "dream" of the dratted things serving all NSE lines never came about ! They were SO good they needed new power equipment if memory serves. Thank gawd I retired.

Yup, it's funny isn't it? For 150 years we built trains to fit the network. The Networker project comes along and we alter the network to fit the trains!!

I had assumed that 5001 would have a secure future but tragically that was, as you say, not the case. Living in Addiscombe, I grew up with these trains, invariably changing at Elmers End for exciting childhood outings to London. The 415s with their lozenge-shaped windows in the doors were all-time favourites..... 1950s style!

DC Traction motors working hard ... wonderful music ! Question..... Why is the conductor rail sometimes in the cess and sometimes in the 6 foot ? Surely not to equalise shoe wear as the units just shuttle back and forth. Having them in the cess is a great idea. Zaps the trespassers straight away !
@TheZacDJ2 жыл бұрын
It is literally that - to even out wear on the shoe gear. The juice rail changes side every ¾ of a mile or so, however it is usually positioned on the side away from the platform at stations. The position of the conductor rail is also influenced by other factors, like underline bridges for example, which may predate the electrification of the line.

I once looked at a dvd/video, can't remember where,but there are certain places where there is a deliberate gap in the 3rd rail,where known wildlife runs are known, Badger's ,Rabbits cross the line in certain place's. Have you heard this ?
@TheZacDJ Жыл бұрын
@@ballymossno1895 Yes, this is very true. The Hastings - Tunbridge Wells line has several Badger crossing gaps, and no doubt there are plenty of other places too. I have to admit that I had clean forgotten about wildlife gaps, so: well remembered, that man. Many thanks for nudging the little grey cells! Kind Regards, Zac

Hi , thanks for your reply regarding the gaps in the 3rd rail for wild life to get across the rails, I really loved travelling on the southern region from the mid 70's right through to the early 2000's , great days and great trains, I managed to purchase a Drivers starting bell from a 2 epb unit from a scrapyard a number of years ago for £10 , so the cab ride in this video, is lovelly for me to watch, Love the sound of the EE507 traction moters , I would love to preserve one of the Westinghouse DH25 compressors as an unusual item, would the compressor work of the units electrical system ?. What voltage would it operate at ?. Cheers Tim
@TheZacDJ Жыл бұрын
@@ballymossno1895 The compressor motor on all Southern Electric Units works at line voltage:- ie 750 vDC. The Spa Valley Railway has a 4BIG Unit which they use in Push-Pull mode with a diesel locomotive, but I think they plan to adapt the Unit to have a high tension electrical supply from the loco so that the heating, compressor and motor-generator all work: for the full acoustic experience! The starting bell works off the low tension supply of 70 vDC from the motor-generator/battery (as did the lighting by the way). The heating elements were 250 volts each, so 3 of them were connected in series across a line voltage 750v supply; 750v ÷ 3 = 250v. Hope this is of interest/use. Kind Regards, Zac

14:25 a nice example of using the Auto Brake.
@TheZacDJ Жыл бұрын
Yes, we were supposed to test the Westinghouse Brake before reaching full braking distance when approaching a terminal road. I can't guarantee that we always did, sometimes just clean forgot, but it was supposed to be done. Also, we were supposed to use just the Auto Brake on empty stock moves, to maintain proficiency in its use, and make sure everything got a workout. In theory it wasn't just a rule to use the Auto / Westinghouse Brake, it was the law. Under the Regulation of Railways Act 1889, the Auto Brake had to be IN DAILY USE. Using it for empty stock moves satisfied that requirement.

Its a pity you couldn't have done the journey in opposite direction. The sun shining through the cab window made it difficult to see, and your hand over the camera didn`t help.

All the time we spent in Kent and only the odd EPB hurried through without stopping for a picture cos we got CEPs instead. Boo.
