The train units of my youth. The seats were very comfortable, loved being able to stick your head out the window ( prudently). Best of all was the noises from the traction motors. Miss them a hell of a lot, I remember the brakes were very good

Wow I remember these and same interiors as ones on the LTS to Southend. Great to hear again the old ticking compressor and DC traction motors. Brings back memories of the hot metal smell from the brakes and warm oil smell. Proper trains!

My god, this is incredibly evocative. Reminds me of many exciting day-trips to London or the Kent coast as a nipper back in the early 80s, yet I find these old EPBs to be extremely haunting with their distinctive whine as the speed builds. It's lovely to hear the old Westinghouse compressor again, but I'd quite forgotten the massive jolt when pulling away ; it's like a small bomb going off !

Such an evocative, mellifluous sound. Even though I have lived most of my life on Tyneside (from where, incidentally, 2 EPBS were sent south after the de-electrification of the Newcastle-South Shields line in the 60s), I can still smell the heady mixture of stale tobacco, Dettol, spilt beer, mouldering moquette and brake fluid that was their unique aroma, and also see the naked bulbs on the ceiling. I remember taking the up Waterloo stopper from Stoneleigh with my mum, once being chastised for racing across Newbury Gardens to the station as an up 4-Sub moaned into the platforms. Changing at Raynes Park for Kingston, watching the semi-fast 4-VEPS whoosh by the framed adverts for Goldenrail. I was only 4, but these ostensibly hum-drum trains always intimated an occult sense of adventure and travel, which has never left me. Later in life, I realised that David Bowie and Kate Bush must have travelled up to town on these same workhorses from suburban Kent, unconsciously assimilating the rich music of these EMUS.

oh how id love to ride behind one of these, head out the window, wind in my face and the brilliant sound of those EE507s, hopefully the southern electric group can get their 411 (i think) back out on the mainline once more!

My last run on an EPB on a normal service train was to Hayes and back on 17/2/95. It was probably the same working as this. I used to get the 06:13 up from Horsham changing at Three Bridges into a train from Brighton that arrived at London Bridge at 07:14. Then hang about until an EPB turned up. I didn't have to wait long!

Amazing, especially for someone like me who wasn’t travelled on one and only seen the outside - when it is stationary - however I’ve always wanted to ride them. Thank you for such an excellent video of one!

I work along these lines, was disappointed when you cut off at Lewisham. Not much has changed in general. London Bridge and colour schemes and some minor construction changes along the line are most notable. Would love to see film of about 1965 going through Abbey Wood level crossing.

I grew up in Dorking in 70s and 80s so EPBs and SUBs were stock in trade. All those noises and engine whines and brake screeches and moquette and filthy windows and slamming doors and windows that rattled open of their own accord. I do not want to be one of "those" people, but it's unavoidable.... trains are saccharine now.
