On September 5th, 1982 in Craig, Alaska. A crime would occur that would shake not only the city, but the entire state to it's core. A crime so tragic and violent that many assumed whoever responsible would quickly be caught... yet, almost 40 years have gone by and the case is still unsolved.

9 out of 10 people wouldn’t rush against an armed assailant, especially not with children present. And even if one of them would, and got shot, it would work as a very effective deterrent for the rest of the group not to try the same. There ‘s also a possibility that the assailant killed, or at least incapacitated, the men as soon as he entered the cabin, or that he shot them one by one as he went there depending where they were. There is also the possibility that the gunman held a hostage, the mother or the little girl for instance. The little girl could have died by mistake, by a ricochet for instance. But if the boy actually was taken, he must have been left alone on the Investor while the killer drove in to shore to buy gas. He must also have been hidden in the dinghy when the other boat almost rammed it, while the Investor started to catch fire. The boy may also have been taken as hostage, as a safety precaution if the assailant were to be cornered on open sea by the police or the coast guard The motive may very well have been money. The Investor had allegedly a huge catch. Perhaps some of it were sold for cash.

Idk theres a lot of factors for attacking assailants, its just as likely people will lash out in defense of children. Not to mention once people think theyve got nothing to lose or will be punished anyways they will go after the attacker. If anything maybe one or two of the crewmembers were killed for defending themselves, it would explain why they were killed. Regardless, this seems like either a deeply personal crime(i doubt it was pill) or someone economically involved was using terror tactics. I would bet other fishermen in the area know a lot more than they're willing to say. The fact that the bodies they found had nearly a dozen rounds in each of them points to the fact that someone either hated them or that a cartel of some kind was involved. It also means that more than one person did the killing since doing something like that alone is pretty difficult even with a fully automatic firearm because you'd have to reload and open yourself up to attack. I'm not totally convinced that the two crewmembers died there but it seems likely though the description given of the suspect does fit one of them.

As someone who is familiar with boating, handling that boat wouldn’t be an easy task. By that, I mean that pulling in or out of a slip would be pretty difficult. The boat idling would be a sign that the person driving was familiar enough with boats, but not comfortable with a vessel that size. This also would significantly lessen the pool of suspects because the average guy off the street wouldn’t be able to handle that vessel at all.

The more I look over the case the more I lean in the direction of whoever was responsible for this had boating experience. I think the tow lines being left behind was simply them forgetting about them in the moment.

Agreed.... it's odd for a person to be experienced enough to cast off & manoeuvre a boat like _Investor_ but not actually pilot it under power, or take it out to sea to sink it instead of parking awkwardly where other vessels will pass you. I suspect they didn't have any experience with the local waterways or how to navigate using the _Investor's_ equipment, so they stuck close enough to shore to be able to find it visually from the skiff. Also, they try to scuttle a boat by opening the seacocks but don't understand that it won't work in calm seas.... so they have _some_ knowledge of boats but unlikely to be someone who has much experience on fishing boats or trawlers. Definitely an easy way to focus your suspect list.

@@Cadaber Honestly, the tow lines being left behind seem to indicate there are only one attacker. I worked as a dock hand at a marina when I was in high school--all the way up until I graduated college. Boats of that size usually have a mate because it is impossible to maneuver a boat that size, and grab the lines at the same time.

You mention how they didn't send a helicopter with water earlier. Fighting a boat fire with water has a risk of sinking the boat completely. If the boat is close to dock foam should be used but assuming they were far away I imagine there wasn't a great option for fighting that fire and saving any evidence.

I got no idea either but my guess is that a water hose is more directed into the flames turning it into instant steam rather than just dumping a ton of water and having a large amount of the water miss direct flame and cause it to pool. I could be totally wrong tho haha

@@kyleyuen245 The main difference is that using fire hoses & pumps from another boat gives you more control over the fire fighting & how much damage you're doing - you use less water by focussing on the active flames & it allows time for excess water to flow off the sides of the boat & avoid flooding the whole hull. If you drop a thousand litres of water onto the boat from a helicopter at the same time you can easily flood it, and also do damage to the structure from the weight of the water being dumped onto it.

for those wondering why the sea cock thing didn't work, the sea cock just allows water to flow through the motor for cooling or for a sea water hose [common on fishing boats]. opening the sea cock does not allow the hull to fill in any way shape or form. if you turned the hose on at the same time and pointed it below decks, it would fill the hull, until the motor lost power [the motor would need to be running]. still not a total win.

You can, just by turning the right valves, open the sea cock to the bilge and sink the vessel. I believe the Investor had RSW tanks though, so that might have kept her afloat.

Hey cadaber! I noticed you mentioned that there was a bit of a lag in dousing the flames with a helicopter. I do some amateur flying and my dads and instructor. If you look at the background of the photos where the boat is engulfed in flames: you will notice the weather is looking pretty hazey. I would bet they were waiting for safe vfr(visual flight recognition) conditions to be able to properly douse the flames without missing, or accidentally crashing before they got there. Just my guess, cause it looks super clear in the photo with the helicopter, so there was a significant weather shift in the cloud base in that 24 hours. Sadly something as simple as weather can screw up a lot

Sometimes it doesn't even take that, I've driven past someone who was well in front of me turning round at T junction, dudes then followed me up the road flashing his lights, I've stopped to see what was up, got a load of verbal abuse luckily by time he got up to car I think he'd realised he was well out numbered (as 3 of us were in my car) got back in his car a floored it off, still have no idea what I'd done wrong lol our best guess was he thought I was someone else

@@slyaspie4934 Same thing happened to me once. I used to drive trucks for a company and for this load I had a new Ford F250 with a long trailer (hot shot load). I was driving back to Wisconsin with a full load late at night and I noticed an older truck was following me driving like halfway between my blind spot and the other lane with his lights completely off. It took me a minute to notice him in my side mirror because it was so dark out, but when I did I realized he had been following me like that for at least 20 minutes (I thought his car was just like a bug smear on my side mirror). I got so freaked out that I called my mom and started telling her the mile markers just in case he tried to shoot me or something lol. I still to this day have no idea what his problem was-I drive very professionally in the company trucks since they have the company decals on the side and have one of those "How am I driving?" numbers on the back. The only thing I can think is that because it was a new truck he got jealous or something, idk. I was driving from Rochester to Milwaukee, so once I got closer to some bigger cities and more cars hopped on the road he put his lights back on and dipped.

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe that's why they didn't send the helicopter with water up earlier? They thought it'd burn itself out in the time it'd take to get a helicopter over it. By the time it's been burning an hour and half/two hours, they're thinking it can't go on for THAT much longer, surely!? But then they were all fisher folk, wouldn't they know a boat's normal burn time? Perhaps it doesn't happen often? Also, wouldn't the accelerant have made it burn faster?

Don't know why I'm still thinking about the detail of the boat being on fire😄but they also might have been reluctant to douse it in water if they suspected right away that the boat would be the scene of a crime (despite their incompetence in handling the investigation on the whole). If they did it anyway and risked washing away a lot of evidence, could that account for the lack of evidence of three of the bodies? I suppose the boat fire is a crucial stage of this crime. It's the first time the crime is discovered, so much of the evidence was contained in the boat, and whoever was moving it around and going to/from it has to be a strong suspect. If only the police could have got their act together and found the deviant who caused all this pain to so many. Who knows what they've gone on to do since then? I hope they're haunted by what they did every time they close their eyes (including blinking!).

I was living in Anchorage in 1982. This was big news and the worst thing of it's kind (mass murder) to happen in anyone's memory , it would later be overshadowed by the Robert Hansen story. The serial killer of at least eight young woman over a 10 year span ending in 1983.

I agree maturity is probably a factor, along with attention span. So many people only listen to KZbin while doing other things, and often also play videos at x2 speed. I've seen comments on videos complaining about things such as pauses in dialogue, or sounds where they can't work out what is going on without having to look at the video, so a lot of content creators realise it's not always worth the effort of doing more than a talking head if subs and views are their only goal. I really appreciate channels like this that still produce video as a visual art.

The idea they could have overwhelmed the shooter is misguided in my opinion. Fishing boats are pretty tight quarters with several people often being quartered in the same cabin. Comfort of the crew is not a big concern. I even slept in a bow cabin with 8 total bunks stacked 4 to a side on a 50' Delta tuna fishing charter with 4 more customers sleeping in convertible table/bunks in the galley. And we were paying customers. If the attacker waited until everyone was in their respective quarters before starting to target people then the narrow passageways and cramped quarters would have prevented more than one person coming at the shooter at once. More than likely you would have people trying to barricade themselves in their cabins as soon as they saw someone get shot. People tend to flee from shooters and not run towards them.

But I think there is an issue with one of your ideas: One man with a gun can absolutely control even 6 others with a gun. Indeed, if people rush the gunman, they will win. But few will do that, because at least someone will be shot. There have been cases of more than 6 controlled by a single person with a weapon.

Even if the other deckhands had no relation to the two kids, I can't imagine they'd sit by idly while the lives of their boss' two little kids were under thrreat. Majority of people are unskilled and too scared to fight, unless they're determined to protect innocent children. Even if the killer had one or both kids hostage, no way would they not come up with some idea to take him down to ensure the little ones were safe.

I'm not totally convinced that the two crewmembers died there but it seems likely though the description given of the suspect does fit one of them. it would also make sense because whoever was driving the boat away was familiar with the concepts of boating but didn't have the experience of handling a big boat, I think the lines being left behind can be safely ignored as either an in the moment mistake or because if theres multiple people, only the one driving would've known boating procedures not the other person, not to mention taking the lines is more difficult for a single person to do on a large boat. I think that multiple people did the killing but left a ine man cleanup crew to finish it off, afterall a grouo of them would be suspicious and easy to spot in the daytime. I definitely lean towards a cartel or upset businessman hypothesis because it makes the most sense, there likely was more than one person involved, nearby captains and fishermen know the business and that sort of thing and seemingly ducked those questions when asked leading me to think they knew who he was involved with though probably not what they were doing, also someone would've heard something, it doesn't make sense that nobody heard anything even with the music, there were people walking by all night(think of the people that saw him chatting with pill) and no one heard anything? It only makes sense if the murderer(s) had surprised firearms. If they had shot inside the boat the pressure would've made it loud as fuck though the noise itself likely wouldn't travel far. It was mentioned that locals would've noticed outsiders but you're assuming that this cartel or business group is made up of outsiders, A local crime syndicate could be involved(which could explain why pill shoes up that night, maybe to warn them since in a small town like that even junkies know the lower and middle levels of the illegal business. Or it could explain the lackluster investigation because the local PD and govt could be on the take or in on it) or people who come through regularly from another fishing boat could've done it, the latter certainly wouldn't raise eyebrows and would be harder to solve but it wouldn't explain the poor boating skills of the cleanup guy unless he was a deckhand.

I would probably lean more towards personal (maybe someone who has friends in high places) as a local crime syndicate I feel would be more blatant about it to send a message if they’re going to kill. I have a feeling it wouldn’t be done on the night of a party unless someone wanted to hide it. But it could also be a local crime boss. That’s just how I feel.

@@Cadaber What If the person gives indication they won't shoot you if you do as they say? Random example giving them all the money on the boat. Given there was a child and a pregnant person on board, not to mention the shock of the situation possible creating a freeze or fawn response in some people, I unfortunately believe it's likely that the people on the boat may have hoped they'd be spared if they were compliant, or just went into shock. Either way, it's a truly awful case and your video did a great job at laying out the timeline, thanks for the content

I'd bet that the fired employee did it. He knew the crew just got paid. He was probably upset he didnt get paid and needed money for his drug habit and to pay all the bills that come with being a new father. So he went and met with the crew. Probably at the bar they were at, where he probably acted friendly, so he could make sure they were loaded in cash. Then he went back to the boat at night with intentions on robbing the crew. I think you drastically underestimate how easily a person with a gun can take over 6 or 8 people. That being said, I think the crew actually did try to overpower him, but he managed to shoot one or more people. At this point I think he freaked out and decided to murder the rest of the people. Why this theory wasnt proposed by the prosecution blows my mind.

That witness was likely overconfident in his perception. Being able to narrow a person's age down that much from that distance is essentially impossible, unless you already know something else about that person.

Well. The bystander effect is a real thing. (And similarly to the bystander effect psychological effects on a person can cause inaction *Edit for CLARIFICATION REASONS) One man with a gun often is able to rob stores with several people inside. I mean we aren't psychics. You can't read the other person's mind and know if they are ready to go. And which one moves first. A good chance one of you at least is taking that bullet. So who is it gonna be. You, me? One of the other two. Do I move left.. Do I move right.. Do I charge straight at him. Will they charge too or am I putting me arse on the line for nothing. Can I talk this guy down? Those kinds of things would be running through your mind. Heck maybe that's why he shot everyone. Maybe he just wanted to scare someone and then someone did rush at him. Then he just didn't stop shooting. Regardless I think there was more than reasonable doubt. I have no clue if the dude did it. I mean it's not unheard of for someone to kill an entire family over job disputes. And if he was really seen with them that night. It's a hell of a coincidence. But I think the jury and the courts did right. Not near enough evidence to support it. Still well within the realm of possibility even for just one man.

thats not the bystander effect... bystander effect is when no one calls for help or steps in to help when witnessing someone in trouble because they assume someone else will do it, like if you hear screams and gunshots from your neighbors house and you don't call the police because you assume someone else will. self-preservation isn't the same as the bystander effect

@@BlisaBLisa The bystander effect still exists even when you are the one in need of help. Take it to the base level. Self Preservation is also a factor in not getting involved. It's not just putting it down to expecting someone else to do it. Which very much does happen in these instances. You freeze up and don't want to move first because you will be the focus and a hope someone else will make that move. Effectively put each person waiting for the next to make a move and no one else making it. Sure would be neat if there was something very similar that we see in outsiders looking in but instead applied to the actual victims. I mean just not calling the cops when you hear the neighbors fight is a form of it. But just recently a woman was attacked and violated on a Subway or train and no one did anything but pull out cameras and start to record. So self-preservation is absolutely a factor in the Bystander Effect. Apply the principles of that to the victims and the acts of self preservations right? The 3 forms? Fight Flee or. What was that third one? Freeze? I guarantee you we have example after example of one lone gunmen being able to control large groups of people. Maybe the bystander effect doesn't apply uniquely to the victims but it's in the ballpark for the psychology that makes victims unable to act on their own behalf. I mean sure argue the semantics over rather the bystander effect can also apply to the victims or not. But don't address the part where it's very similar in nature to what we see in reality in these type of events. Or are you under the impression that one man with a gun can't control a group?

@@highlycriminal3874 no, they are very different things that arent just a matter of semantics. the thing you're referencing with the subway isn't very accurate either, the people who were recording had also been calling authorities for help, and they were recording what was happening so they could have evidence of the crime, they weren't stepping in themselves because of their own safety, but were still attempting to help in the ways they could. its unreasonable to expect regular people to take on a gunman robbing a store, people choosing not to do that are behaving normally and its not any kind of psychological phenomenon. most people do not have superhuman heroism. you didn't mention it in your original comment so idk how you expected me to reply to it lol but no victims cannot be bystanders, those are separate mutually exclusive roles

Putting innocence or guilt aside for a moment, why was John Peel shown wearing a ski mask throughout his trial? I was under the impression that the defendent had to remain identifiable to both witnesses, as well as the jury throughout a trial. Apparently that isn't the case in Alaska? Prosecutor: "Mr. Witness, is the person responsible for murdering this poor family here in this courtroom today?" Witness: "Umm, I think so?" Prosectutor: "You think so? Peel didn't wear it throughout his trial, just the initial indictment in front of a judge. His defence attorneys had requested that he not be photographed by media when he was first brought to court because they were trying to get him bail or house arrest... it would make it difficult to live in the community if his face was plastered all over the news, since he was arrested in Washington (where he lived) but then had the long legal process of being extradited to Alaska. Unfortunately the judge wouldn't ban the media from the Washington courtroom, so his attorneys gave him the mask instead.

A drug cartel fronted the money to buy the boat. The deal was to smuggle drugs in from a mothership. The entire crew were in on it or were paid accomplices. John Coulthurst was skimming or otherwise got on the wrong side of the cartel. The local and State cops were in on it as well, which would explain their "mistakes" and going after the wrong guy. I would research how well off the cops were when they retired. Did any of them have lifestyles way beyond their pay grade? The other fishermen keeping mum on whatever they knew about Coulthurst makes sense seeing as they didn't want to be killed along with their entire families. There's a method to the cartels' madness. Fear is a great motivator.

I think this theory also supports not having a drug user on board as it could result in skimming (Edit) I don't know how common the stereotype is but if 2 crews of fisherman can do the job hungover one person drunk or high (depending on the drug) shouldn't be too much of a burden or pose significant risk to others or the integrity of their work.

We have this term in America called Postal. As in, "He went postal." It refers to someone being fired from a job, and then going into the work place and killing everyone." You have entire building of people, and they hardly ever work together to remove one man. About him being a father. People going Postal, are not driven by the same motives as a serial killier. Having a family is often the reason for someone going Postal. The Average Joe working at a Post Office can have good life. Health care, retirement, and a living wage. Not bad for someone with a highschool education. Average Joe loses his Post Office job, and he can't feed his family. Average Joe goes Postal because of his family, not inspite of his family. Why is it “law enforcement” is the one job where people feel like they need to apologize or explain that they’re not being critical? No job or persons should be put on such a pedestal that they’re untouchable or free from facing consequences and criticism, especially when they fail on such a massive scale. This was such a gross “I don’t give af” act from the cops that they should be dragged for their negligence. When law enforcement is this incompetent, it makes me wonder if a cop or a relative of a cop was involved and the rest are covering it up. It wouldn’t be the first time. Every step of the way the cops failed to do their job correctly. How absolutely strange. It’s almost as if they didn’t want there to be any evidence whatsoever.

It's actually pretty easy to control multiple people with 1gun. First you can lead them to believe that no one will be shot as long as you get what you came for. Second is yes there is more people then the one gun, but anyone in that situation will realize that whoever is the first person to charge and be the hero will ultimately be shot. It's much easier to attack being in the 2nd or 3rd wave knowing that you've got a better chance at survival since the shooter at least has to re-aim and do so with a wounded individual in his way, or the hero has come to terms with the outcome and continues to fight and the 2nd and 3rd person can easily subdue the shooter knowing their safe, though safe because if the gun fires again it will most likely be into the torso of #1. Backtracking though, it takes a hell of a lotta guts to be the #1 guy and plus you don't know if the other guys will follow suit or freeze up
