Cadbury’s Smash - Martians (1973 - 1992)

Every Commercial featuring everyone’s favourite Advert aliens, the Smash Martians! Just mention potatoes and they’ll be laughing their heads off! Because why bother peeling, boiling and mashing them when you can just use Smash? So primitive of us….
Also features some early animatics for the Ads, including ones that never even got made into proper Ads!

Fun Fact. The personalities of the Smash Martians were all improvised by the puppeteers having fun on set.

They were voiced by Peter Hawkins, the original voice of the Daleks in Doctor Who. You can hear it in these robots voices, they do sound like Daleks.

Zippy was a spy sent by these aliens. Sadly the aliens died out because they were obsessed with instant mash potatoes and failed to maintain their space ships but Zippy is still around to this day, albeit in retirement.

Always ran to the TV set when these ads. came on. We'd be laughing for hours afterwards. The heyday of the enjoyable advert. What was the series of the running romance about I think,dark chocolate. We were agog to see how that turned out. Some ads.you really looked forward to,and miss even today. But then,TV was a novelty for many people,like cars,only one or two in the street.

Cadbury's wanted themselves to be attributed as a general food company, but it didn't really work out because of their immensely popular chocolate products. The fate of the Smash production is that they've been sold off to Batchelors.

@@DJ3lectrical SSB, Single Side-Band. It's a radio transmission mode, often used on Citizen's Band(CB) radio and other short wave transmissions, like ham radio. If it's not tuned-in perfectly, it can make voices sound like the Smash robots. :D
