I needed this video a few days ago, when I realized that F360 was going to blow up my processor while sketching out a custom pattern. I tried it with SVGs, but the results were hit and miss and it still bogs the processor while building all of the faces on extrude. This is a great trick and I'm hoping to find the alleged live stream in-depth look at CAM that you mentioned.

this tutorial is 5 years old, current fusion 360 is much faster and allows to pattern feature, instead of pattern the selected faces. So instead of selecting the faces you just select the previous feature (or command in the history line), just google it, pattern feature in fusion 360.

I like the cam created knurl on the round part, but I noticed that the graphic representation has "lied" to us. If you think about the fact the a "V" shaped tool moving from the highest location on that curve, to the a lower position the shape of the "V" will increase in size at the surface, as the side of the tool generates a shallower tangent angle to the part. Don't get me wrong, I like the idea that the pattern comes out even, so don't let the programmers change the sw. The end result is what we are looking for as a pattern. Where as, if it were to actually simulate that pattern in reality, it would not really be anything of use to 3D printer. I just noticed it and figured I would mention it. Thanks again for everything you do Lars. CAD on!

Hi UpYourTrunkLumberCo Thank you for watching! Are you talking about the curved surface? I should have used the multi axis toolpaths, that would have made a constant depth. Best, Lars

Succesfully created a knurling around a cylindrical object. Sketch, extrude, pattern along the circular path... then did a sectional sketch that I cut with using the 'revolve' tool and pattern-cloned the whole feature from the timeline along the axis of the cylinder. Great victory

Hello my friend. Is there a way to apply this knurling technique to an organic surface? If I apply it the way you do, the grooves would differ in depth. Imagine that I modeled an alligator, for example, and I want to knurl its entire surface. How to proceed? The goal is 3d printing, so I have to output as STL. Anyway, I would like to thank you for this video.

Halo Lars, I'm a very absolute beginner. Thanks to your channel i've learned a lot of tricks. Though i still need something very basic but very important as well, namely how to knurl on a sphere (not cylinder) like Bowl or ball? Fusion doesn't allow me to sketch on a sphere surface to create pattern, well it must be always a flat surface to create a sketch on it. Thanks

Lars, I'm total Newbie to this and I get always angry when things don't go like they do in the videos.. so while is amazing to follow your older tutorials Fusion is acting a bit differently or maybe I don't know anything .. but like example at 14 45, you create sketch on one side, hit C for circle but it selects only top half.. in my case it selects entire circle not half one.. so maybe there is a trick but maybe the new fusion changed that

Hi Lars Never thought of using CAM to do that. I have a plastic part that I need to add a texture like concrete both for a 3D print and then for the mould tool. I'm from a Solidworks background, it has a feature to add a 3D texture, I don't think 360 has that yet? So have you made a livestream to show how already or could you make one? Thanks again Kev

I really wish they would put some more work in to modeling with curved surfaces. I feel it is lacking a little. For example, When putting patterns or text on a cylinder you can't wrap it around the cylinder. The only way around this right now is to model it on a flat surface then use sheet metal tools to curve it in to a cylinder but that brings up a number of other issues.
@WhyplayGaming
@WhyplayGaming 8 ай бұрын
This is worth exploring. "I have a request" is it possible to use sheet metal tool too turn a 3D image to get the dimensions of each side. I'll explain what I'm looking for here. I own a 3D printer and a Cutting machine (Cricket). Now I often print items but I like to cut vinyl to cover the image. I can manage this with basic geometry. But if I add curves or fillets this gets very difficult to calculate. So is there a way to convert a 3D image into sheet metal so I can get the required dimensions kindo of like how you make a cube out of paper bye cutting a T looking shape of 6 squares.

I'd like to know why Cam view can render the same thing almost instantly but modeling view grinds to a halt.
@Anselwithmac
@Anselwithmac 5 жыл бұрын
My guess: The CAM render is subtractive, where the model view is a subtraction of the original block. In modeling, the view you see is the finished calculation of work without the subtraction trick. In modeling, once you complete this you can continue to edit the new faces, but in cam view you cannot, since it is still a simple block with subtractions.

Thank you for the video Lars! You have taught me so much about Fusion is the short couple of months I have been tinkering with it. I have a question, or questions, about this topic. Is a pattern like this possible on a model that is made in the "sculpt" tool? I have several models that I have designed for soft plastic fishing lures, (worms, crawfish, shrimp, etc...) but they are all smooth surfaces. I would like to add some texture to them. Is creating a pattern like this to use as a "skin" to apply to a sculpted model possible? I apologize if my terminology is off, I'm still learning! Thanks!

Much has changed, in Fusion360 2.0.8816 the constraints menu is not on my Sketch Palette but rather in the menu bar. Also, I don't know what you did to move the lines at 2:08 but I don't have an option to not select a menu item but just to click with the mouse and have Fusion read my mind that I'd like to move the lines. The same is true for when you set the angle, again, Fusion read your mind because I didn't see any menu selection, just mouse clicks and viola, different action.
