The reason the plot is so disjointed is because the movie was originally supposed to be a coming-of-age movie, focused on Danny and his girlfriend. But they'd brought in many of the top comedians, and they were so funny that they kept expanding their roles, and shrinking the coming-of-age plot until it was almost completely removed, with the plot changing to center around the tournament and the contest between Ty & Danny vs. the Judge. That allowed for a lot more great comedy, but they probably should have re-shot some scenes to clean up the old plot. But they were out of time and out of money, so they still had some of the old plot left behind. And, yes, the Caddy Master was played by Bill Murray's brother, Brian Doyle-Murray, who you've probably seen in Groundhog Day (as the Mayor) and in Wayne's World (as Noah Vanderhoff of Noah's Arcade).

In fairness, in the ‘70s and ‘80s we were much more tolerant of movies like this, where it is really like a loosely constructed, thrown together, random bunch of skit-like scenes. Animal House is similar. Both those movies had a little bit of “letting the patients run the asylum” syndrome, where the director had to do the best he could with all the egos and shenanigans he was dealing with on set. I used to not understand how anyone could not find those movies hilarious, but now I can see that they are way more a vibe of that era, which fortunately or unfortunately is long gone. That style of comedy was fresh and groundbreaking back then, but it lands a little softer now IMO. We oldheads are viewing through the lens of these classic movies’ initial impact, which is why we still find them so hilarious, but a lot of them are really a bit of a mess.

First off, you only saw portions of thel movie. You missed critical components. also, you're a foreigner that really doesn't get American comedy.

Nice reaction. And while I love CADDYSHACK, I’m not mad at you for not liking it. It’s not for everyone. I worked in a movie theater when it opened and it just tickled my funnybone. Plus, I really liked Kenny Loggins songs in it. But you are correct: it’s a mess. It doesn’t really hold up as a good movie. The “story” is barely there. And it’s just a bunch of comedy bits tied together. So, not only wouldn’t it bother me that you didn’t like it (because your reactions are fun to watch and plus, you are cute), on this one, you’re actually right: it’s not a really good movie. It’s just got some funny bits. And I like the chemistry of some of the comedians in it.

This is a great movie. Yes, the original caddy story was shrunk down a bit to make more room for the comedians playing the club members. It gave each of them a chance to shine in their own comedic style.

How dare you, you didn't like a movie that I liked when I was 15. I will never watch your channel again. That's a JOKE, people are allowed to dislike movies! Caddyshack is definitely a movie of its time, it's targeted at mel's, and it's a very unique American type of humor.

80's comedies don't generally age as well as other genres. This was hugely popular when released, mostly because Chevy Chase, Bill Murray and Rodney Dangerfield were already big stars. Art is subjective. I'm sure everyone appreciates your honest assessment.

Comedies of any era will mostly seem out-dated to people who are 2+ generations older than the original target audience.

Michael O Keefe (Danny) was married to Bonnie Raitt for about 10 years. Ted Knight(Judge Smails) was the guard at the door near the end of Psycho.

I actually laughed out loud through lots of this reaction. (a testament to how funny this movie is to ME) Dawn, if you liked everything your reactions wouldn't be authentic. Keep doing what you do!

I think that it’s great that you give honest opinions and slag a movie off if you don’t like it. I appreciate that you don’t just sit there and pretend you love everything because you think that’s what people want to hear. The comedy is of another time and probably didn’t age well plus you’re missing cultural references. It’s all good keep being honest.

Another classic from the time I was growing up, and now you know where the expression "going Caddyshack" comes from and what it means ...

I watched good will hunting when it came out, and while it is okay, it's not one I would watch again. However, caddy shack and caddy shack 2 are on my comedic gold list.

Now that you saw this you HAVE to watch Back to School with Rodney Dangerfield. The excentric guy in this.
@TomCat7772 күн бұрын
This was Rodney Dangerfield's first movie. He came from a stand-up background and didn't know the movie business terms, so when the director told him action he didn't do anything. Finally here started telling Rodney to just do his thing to get him to start acting

This was first written as a drama about Danny and the girl. Then they realized they had all these great comedians so they rewrote it with comedy. That's why most of the Danny parts feel different.

Dawn, your honesty is appreciated, not hated. We don't want your reaction channel to be faked. I do admit I didn't predict you not liking "Caddyshack". For me, I really enjoy this classic comedy. Writer / Director Harold Ramis was a Legend - RIP. Speaking of randomness - Both Bill Murray and Rodney Dangerfield did what ever they wanted. They were ad-libbing their parts the entire movie. Chevy Chase also went off script and did his own thing quite a lot as well.

Caddyshack is a classic. I get why you didn't care for this movie. Some movies just need another watch. There are plenty of movies I did not like, but later I was able to appreciate it. Take some time and re-watch this movie with a friend. You might be surprised. Love the reaction and the honesty.

The thing was an early attempt to comedically address income inequality in the US , it was beginning to become "a thing" even before Reagan was elected in '80. Tag line on the movie posters was, "The snobs against the slobs." I'm an older guy, still enjoy it for nostalgic reasons..but understand why someone who wasn't here at the time wouldn't. Also, Bill Murray was the guy who 'replaced' Chevy Chase on the "Saturday Night Live" late-night comedy skit TV show. To see them in the same film was kind of crazy back then.
@ryanjacobson2508Күн бұрын
Economic inequality was low between the 1940's-Early 1980's (the 70's actually saw a devaluation of some of the assets owned by the wealthy). The Boomer generation was economically privileged but hated the culture and temperament of older generations.

This is one of those movies that growing up I always felt kind of obligated to like and then looking back realized was...well, kind of mid, really. Funny moments, to be sure. Favorite characters - the gopher, then bill murray, then rodney dangerfield, then everyone else is kind of annoying. Which might be the point, since it's all about 'snobs and slobs', but none of the characters I like really seem part of that. They're either just outside it all, like the gopher, or they're just crazy. It's interesting the 'bully' guy, who Danny nearly fights, really isn't that bad a guy, and kind of interesting that my LEAST favorite character is Danny himself, when I guess I'm supposed to like him. I like the movie more than you do, but definitely not 'best movie ever'. Anyway, love you forever Dawn. Keep the reactions coming :)

Rodney Dangerfield rules! "Four! ... I shoulda yelled two!" and "Did someone step on a duck?" became favorite lines to parrot for many teenage boys during the early eighties when the film was still new. It was an early VHS hit for a while too, back when VCR's were new home technology. Also check out Michael O'Keefe, caddy Danny Noonan, opposite Robert Duvall in the family drama The Great Santini (1979). Another comedy drama from that era that captures its times well, but without the sophomoric humor of Caddyshack, is Breaking Away (1979), featuring a young Dennis Quaid in a film about a group of hardscrabble teenagers from Indiana and their obsession with competitive bicycle racing.
