Another thing, I love waving and saying 'good morning\afternoon' to all cyclists I see, even walkers as I pass on the bike path, I say "passing good morning". It's the way my parents bought me up to be respectful to all people around me. Story time, I'm a girl on a bike and the weekend I slowed down and rode along side another girl and talked to her for 45min and it was the best morning, I found out she's a academic at the university I'm studying at and this is just brilliant to meet another girl who loves bikes, riding, and academics. Life is great

I always wave to cyclists and motorcyclists. If passing someone on the way uphill I always give a word of encouragement, if someone passes me going up, I wish them good luck... If I need my hands on the bars because I am descending like a madman, I still nod at them and yell some encouragement... Been to places where pros train, and they always wave too... Only arseholes don't wave.

I'm so glad that you gave an honest, practical and logical answer to the disc brake question. I have three vintage steel bikes (87 Limongi, 96 Cinelli Supercorsa and a 95 Eddy Merckx Arcobaleno) built with modern Campagnolo groupsets and high-end aluminum wheelsets. They are lighter (8-9kg) than the vast majority of the carbon bikes with disc brakes that my buddies ride (over 9kg). As well, my wheelsets are all high end that I bought used, in near mint condition for between $200 and $400 CAD. What I love about my bikes is that they cost a fraction of what a new carbon-disc bike costs, weigh the same or less, look great, are a blast to ride and still stop exceptionally well. They are also great conversation starters at the coffee shop. If you aren't racing, you don't need the lightest and greatest carbon disc bike for $10,000. I love your content! Keep up the great work!

I think it’s also important to realize that at least in America vast numbers of Rail Beds have been converted into riding trails.therefore the proliferation of gravel type cycles make sense. Furthermore these trails are growing exponentially in popularity and availability.
@Turbobuttes4 ай бұрын
Gravel does seem like an exceedingly American trend, but not because of converted rail beds, rather because of the country's vast size that makes paving everything prohibitive which means you get actual dirt roads going to remote places. Over here in Germany any road that goes somewhere is already paved, and anything that's not paved is like half a mile of field access for Planty McFarmerson in his giant tractor and it's so ridden with overgrowth, bumps and holes it makes you wish for an XC mountain bike. Smooth gravel for miles simply isn't a thing here, and as such gravel bikes feel hugely overmarketed and underutilized. If I were to get a gravel bike it wouldn't be for gravel, it would be for extra cushioning on the fucking cobblestones everywhere.

- I recommended a low end carbon bike a long time ago for a friend and it turned out to be a real pig. Heavier than one of my aluminum bikes and probably not a better ride quality (it was too small for me so I never rode it.) But that was 15 years ago, so hopefully the low end carbon frames of today are much better. I will say that my 2004 Salsa Las Cruces made of paper-thin Scandium Aluminum is a really nice riding bike, and it weighs only 1 lb more than my 2022 Trek Emonda SL7. - Here in the U.S., I've never EVER seen anyone wear a pro kit. I have seen people wear matching jersey and bibs, but usually they are from a sponsored ride of some sort. - Rim brakes on Al rims are perfectly fine - great even. But carbon rims demand disc brakes. - Road cycling has been decreasing since the advent of mountain biking in the '90s, and now gravel biking. And why not? You can easily ride your gravel bike on either tarmac or gravel roads - it's a much more flexible option! More choices means more dilution (but also, hopefully, more participation overall)

I have one for those days I may do a proper climb or want to keep up in a group ride but I have converted all my bikes to something more all-road-thicker tires, two wheelsets (30-32 on road and swap out 43 for gravel), comfort, riding at whatever speed and distance I want. I used to be a big fan of road racing but it's just gotten so ridiculous and somewhat elitist that it's driven me away. And the claims of all the latest tech and innovations are all the same that it's hard to believe it's any better than the last iteration, and it's hard to keep up. It's all marketing hype and I've just decided not to buy into it anymore. I ride what I want now and am influenced less by the pros. Only took 40+ years.

on carbon brake tracks: The new generation of textured brake tracks with grooves in them really don't have any of these issues anymore. Pair those with rather soft pads and you're good to go. It will stop you fine, even in torrential rain. The only thing that remains then are overheating issues on long descents. That problem will probably never disappear.

@cesargarciaalbarran3377 ай бұрын
In the winter on the bike what you want is insulation, not precisely warmth. Wool is good because as long as it doesn't get wet, it insulates you pretty well against the wind. While synthetic fiber baselayers will let precious heat out if it's too cold outside, particularly in your feet and hands.

There are loads of different aluminium types (6061, 7050, 7075, etc.), treatments (like T6 heat treatment), manufacturing processes (single/double/triple butted, hydroforming, etc.), anodizing quality, welding quality, etc. All aluminium definitely isn't created equal. But more importantly, saying all aluminium frames are of equal quality, because aluminium = aluminium (which it obviously isn't) is like saying all houses are the same, because bricks are bricks and concrete = concrete. Or saying all clothing is the same, because cotton = cotton and polyester = polyester. An aluminium Walmart bike frame is worlds apart from a high-end brand frame. It's true that pricing isn't always the best indicator of quality, but there are huge differences in aluminium frame design, material and manufacturing quality.

‘Gravel bikes will take over the road bike market’ opinion - could not agree more. Cycling as a sport has always been generally speaking a sport which ‘copies’ or follows other industries i.e: carbon fibre, (attention to) aerodynamics - from moto racing; suspensions, disc brakes, goggles - motocross/ motorbikes; clippless pedals - skiing. Just to name a few within sports. Gonna get bit philosophical here but as humans, we trend to lean toward an ‘easier’ or more comfortable option, comfort on a wide spectrum. A very good examples for this is the car industry, in fact is probably the best comparison to what’s happening to the cycling industry at the moment. The most popular type of cars today are SUVs. That was not the case 20-25 years ago but today pretty much every car manufacturers best selling line is their SUV line. Additionally there are car brands coming out with SUVs that nobody has ever thought they would (Ferrari, Lamborghini, Rolls Royce, Porsche). These type of cars and bikes are very similar in their capabilities and characteristics in their respective industries: more comfortable, more utilitarian, more robust, more capable with a low delta in performance compared to an equivalent model of sedan or road bike. Road bikes will always have their place in the sport, they won’t disappear, but their popularity and market share will decrease significantly. This trend is happening now due to the evolution of technology within the cycling industry since, as mentioned before cycling is a sport that tends to copy and follow other sports or industries, hence certain technologies that have been borrowed from somewhere else over years and years now allow the manufacturing of bikes that can be built so light weight, so reliable, so robust and so fast and be incredibly versatile and comfortable at the same time.

Also on the topic of rim brakes they're still viable, but not in that you should go out and find a rim brake bike under any circumstances because they're so superior (unless you specifically build a climbing bike and your weight weenie is out (mine is)), rather in that the second hand market offers a load of good value bikes that are worth riding and that just happen to come with rim brakes still because they're a couple of years old. Just stick to alloy braking surfaces and maybe reconsider if you're looking for an allweather bike.

Claiming road is dead because gravel is growing is short-sighted to say the least. First of all road is already established, it's only logical for it not to grow at the same rate as an entirely new category of bike. Secondly I'm yet to see anyone permanently switch away from road, no one's selling their road bike for a gravel bike, gravel bikes either appeal to a new audience or as an n+1 purchase to expand someone's biking environments, in most cases a road bike doesn't disappear from a garage because a gravel bike appears. And lastly the biggest cycling events in the world are still firmly road, and gravel isn't even on the horizon.

Please DO NOT GIVE OUT MISLEADING INFORMATION.... With more and more cycle deaths reported in conurbations, the most likely cause of any cycle accident is 'i did not see them ' This is probably scientifically correct in many crashes and cycle deaths. When choosing a cycle kit, you must understand that a dark colour such as black passing through the fovea of the eye will take longer for the motorist to respond than a light colour such as bright yellow or Red . It comes as no surprise that the UK EU has deemed that all emergency vehicles should be coloured in such a way to ensure maximum accident safety. It is incorrect to wear dark clothing on a bike, such as black, if you want to remain safe. In any accident, you will be deemed as legally contributing to the accident. Black and dark colours should be removed from all shopping baskets and wardrobes to stop cycle deaths. Remain intelligent..not a accident statistic. Life is fleeting..

Metal is strong and works.

Group rides are notorious, with the first rider just making the green light, the second passing orange, and the 20 riders behind them all running the red light to keep up with their mates in front. It's not that all group rides behave dangerously, but I've seen it happen so often, that I don't like riding with more than 4 or 5 people. Also, (using) bells and lights seems to be an insult to (mainly younger) people these days, especially kids on city bikes in the evening. Regarding friendliness, New York is a strange place. Statistically cyclist are much worse behaved and dangerous than car drivers, just not as lethal, at least here in Barcelona.

Cyclist here can be really horrible. I'm a roadie and I see alot of dumb crap going on with many many cyclist in my area. Cyclist wonder why we're hated by drivers, because it only takes 1 cyclist to give the wrong experience

@@bonbonflippers4298 The difference is, a cyclist being a dumb asshole (which some of them definitely are) is basically just an annoyance, while a driver being a dumb asshole is potentially lethal. You really can't compare them.

So this genius thinks that aroeplanes are made from the same stuff as sodacans and cheap rulers from Temu ?
