i've been using cold weather suits instead of sleeping bags for about 4 years now, and now i have only started using a sleeping bag again in November to January months. Usually i use an issue reversible softie thermal suit but also have a buffalo suit, USAF primaloft suit, ... and have used quilted Russian Winter uniforms, French Foreign Legion Thinsulate Suits, and german ww2 repo winter suits. Originally i got the idea from a UKSF Goretex sniper once piece coverall i was selling, when i realized that it would be good to sleep in. In cold weather i have found often its good to have a poncho liner over the top as it offers another layer, absorbs frost or dew. (or ends up as a comforter to lay on) Or i wrap it around my feet which are normally just in wool socks.

A few of my camps have been sleeping bag-less now, Once used the green softies like pyjamas, no quilt or bag or clothes, in the( summer rain camp) vid. was more than warm enough. Was so warm fell asleep with it unzipped, and woke up chilled at 4 in the morning, (my bad) Lol. Anyway I tested the fishing suit in a gortex bivvy on night 1. I found where the bivvy touched the suit, it detracted heat from that area, and was about to give up on the bivvy idea, until you just mentioned the poncho liner. That would give the barrier from the dew frost, will try that out next. Although no bivvy bag is actually required, its just habbit of feeling enclosed. Pro tip just for you only, have you tried using the green softies like long jons, worn under the trousers, are far better than over.....(in a static environment) of course, although light treks or working, shouldn't sweat too much. I did it in the Beast from the east a couple of years ago, all my opos were moaning about being frozen, I was toasty as a bex in a rug....atb...bex

@@bexbugoutsurvivor i have slept in just the thermal suit and it was warm, so warm in fact i had to open the jacket zipper, but usually i sleep in some issue long johns and a base layer, just to keep the suit cleaner (i'm out for multi-day trips). I find i like something over my shoulders when sleeping, i think a thin fleece would work just as well. Back when i was in the infantry i would sleep in a goretex bivi bag on a roll mat, and didnt bother with a sleeping bag then either, but sleep tended to be about 4 hours at best,

I liked the hip belt modification so well I did the same for my Predator 30, used a Viper molle belt, attached the molle belt to the pack using grimlocks on the side molle webbing on the pack to the D rings at the rear of the belt. The pack carries more weight comfortably and I fitted 2 Osprey utility pouches to the molle belt, crusader mug and 58patt bottle one side, stove on the other plus a small zipped molle pouch for 1st aid kit, might swap it out and put an Osprey SA80 pouch on each side, one for 1st aid, the other for torch/water filter/multitool/whatever I need to hand. Thanks for sharing the idea, good stuff, Cheers

I have my eye on the Predator 80-130, I recon karrimor and berghaus give the PLCE a good arse kicking. The pack in this video is just what we give to the ACF (cadets) I'm cheating Lol, but may upgrade to a karrimor 50.L How do find the comfort loaded...All the best bex
@Flexaret
@Flexaret 3 жыл бұрын
@@bexbugoutsurvivor It would be a good pack the Karrimor, if you get the chance go for it, both it or the Berghaus are quality. I have an OD PLCE issue bergan with a Berghaus quality check label stitched in the main seam on the inside so Berghaus must have done part of the contract. I've no complaints about my Predator 30 as standard but the molle belt as you know transfers a lot of weight off the shoulders so you can really load it up plus it meant I could add the pouches and have my waterbottle to hand. The cadet pack look a useful size, almost like an N.I. pack but a bit taller from what I can see. Just picked up a long PLCE in MTP, fits well as I'm not wearing webbing, very happy with the carry. Cheers

I'm out in the UK woodlands having a binge of your videos. I know what you mean about not getting on with sleeping bags. It's - 2 here and I'm liking the medium bag from the British army modular sleep system in case you haven't had a go with that? Comfort is - 15 just for the medium and I can believe it.

I was offered a Def4 last year, but already own the Arctic 90, so passed on it. But was thinking now of getting 2 Def4 medium bags, total 5 kg same as my old MSS bags in weight, but should be warmer. Am looking into wiggy bags too, inner laminite, and outer climashield, about 600 quid for 2 parts. let me know how yours worked out for you, and if you use wearables inside the bag....all the best, gud luk ...bex

Thanx for watching. We have a very similar kit idea. 4 layer and 7 layer. 15 kg isn't to bad for winter, but is possible to half that, keeping it basic, or leave the doss bag at home, and still maintain a layer system. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZuVoaGKgcyChqc link to a light weight bivvy sleeping bag and layer, (if it helps)...bex

Kombat UK, and such like, dont manufacture their products only sell them from suppliers. Some manufactures are worse than garbage, and others are excellent quality, just for camping. The trick is to research who makes it, not who sells it. Kombat is nearly all junk now, but 20 years ago, they bought and stocked their ware house with bulk bespoke made products. since the manufacturing is now done in china, the product suffers. The bergen is this video is Ammo Co cheap and simple, but has been approved, to be uses for UK cadets. The issue full size bergens, are too heavy for the minimal amount of kit I actually and use now. My Kobat UK from 20 years ago, is still like new, the half bergen (cadet is on year two) only defects will come from the lesser quality of the pouch liner, (snow hood) not the cordura its self, or inferia stitching. After carrying issue bergens for over 35 years, they are bastards. Designed to be carried by a kit donkeys. They are not comfy, or well thought out, but that was never a concern by your C.O . Pack donkey days are gone. How ever there are a few different burgens (issued) I do like, and you will just need to bide your time, until, those videos are ready to be aired, as we have other publications, to show first..... I use hiking packs now, some very expensive, and a few cheap ones from the carboot, which I love, (taking into account, I have two broken disks in my spine) I now favour lighter hiking packs. I will show the carboot packs next year, just to give you something else to pull your hair out over...lol; horses for courses, not a one size fits all world (thank God)....nightie night.....happy trails...B

@Paul Taylor I would pull the trigger on that pack. It has an adjustable back frame, much better than the Karrimore SF or Brit issue bergen. Its lacking in the top wet gear loft store pocket, but I recall it having a semi free floating lid instead, allowing roll mat or tent to go on top instead. Again issue packs offer little in the way of load lifters, and the shoulder pads I think are not so thick. If you need to haul heavy kit this is doable. My 80 Litre aviator has been awesome for me though, up to an internal carry of say 16 Kg, but denier is thinner more like a hiking pack tho. The load lifters make the weight seem half its load. Big consideration if going for a bergen with out load lifters, you will be carrying that weight on your shoulders, more so than your hips. Good luck with your stingray, Dutch issue is far superior than Brit, (only my opinion tho) Modern German packs have a lot to offer too. All the best bex

Hope your health improves quickly for you, I know what countless medical attention can do to your mental well being, not able to get out in the field and do the things you like doing......My other alternative was the 7 layer, hope you have had time to watch that video. Mine comprises of alternating wool and fleece to air loft the insulated trapped warm air. This bivvy suit has the effect of using just 4 or 5 layers, and has the benefit of negating a sleeping bag and bivvy, equating to a lighter smaller pack system for cooler weather.....all the very best to ya brother...bex

Nice job mate. What is your preference at the moment after so long time of testing? Do you prefer more clothes layers or a sleeping bag for long term survival? Thank you
@bexbugoutsurvivor
@bexbugoutsurvivor 2 жыл бұрын
That's a really tricky one. The fishing suit is a great insulator and far warmer than a sleeping bag, but a poor isolator (meaning its warm while you wear it) but you won't get the benefit from the ground mat/pad because of the outer nylon shell. In short a sleeping bag is warm, but for 16 hours of the day you will not use it, but still have to carry it. A sleeping bag can also have the issue of being a good insulator and a poor isolator. The fix for this issue is coming up in a video in a few weeks time.....bex

Nice one bex. I have a onesie suit made by northern diver. I usually have that on before I get into the sleeping bag. Space is a problem when the cold weather comes. My fingers are the first to go in cold climate. If you know of any gloves that can take a beating and keep the fingers warm even when wet you might let me know? Stay well bex keep the vids coming.

I was looking at a fleece pile fishing onesie, that I like the idea of. My fingers are always the first to go in the cold too. I gave up on using gloves a long time ago, and use the Dutch army Gore-tex mittens. Fiber pile inner, water proof gore-tex, and soft leather on palms. Beats gloves anytime, (hands down) pun intended.....Just use light weight fingerless gloves under the mittens to perform manual tasks, such as lighting stove, or wiping your a##e etc, a real game changer....bex

This large capacity Cadet Forces MTP Bergen 50L has been designed specifically for use by the UK cadet forces and includes key design features recommended by Cadet Branch. It can stow all the same kit from my Full Size PLCE CS95 infantry Bergen but without the weight of the CS95 Bergen, link to demonstrate this here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4umdWOObLWHhbs&ab_channel=bexbugoutsurvivor We train all our Cadets with this Bergen, as there is a 50 litre maximum allowance for the younger cadets, but fits adults too, given I have a long torso.... penalty is it's not made of Cordura material, but mine is still in great order, given I don't treat it with any care really. It's not for everyone, but it suits me in most applications.
