When you land in a city, it's always very good value to have a trip on a hop-on, hop-off bus tour. In this way you can get your bearings and have a better idea of distances, and if it rains you don't have to get wet!

We have done that in Madrid, New York and Barcelona, its always a good tip, as you say to get your bearings. We did it in Bournemouth once, it started raining and the windows steamed up so much that we couldn't see anything lol.
