I can truly say that this game shaped my life. I was given a copy by my neighbor when I was 7 years old. Now because of this game, I'm studying ancient history in college so I can teach it to a future generation. Thank you, Sierra, for this amazing game!

Man I love this. The thing is the music of this game matches so well with the evolving of your city. The part starting after 5 min has the same leitmotiv as the very first relaxed village track and it feels like this: First track: A few tents standing, give me tools, wood and stone to build the city! Third track (also same leitmotiv): A nice city is standing, give me gladius, pillum and scutum to protect it! Last track: A metropolis is standing, give me chariot, leaf crown and triumph arch and call me Caesar!

I use to build the city up to this soundtrack level, then increase the tax to max and decrease wages to zero while building governor's mansion all over the city with legions in front. The ensuring chaos was spectacular.

What would happen if you did the opposite? Would you possibly go bankrupt?

@@civilwildman Most likely. Exports make up a huge amount of early game economy, they might save you but I don’t know if wages would eat that up. Even mid sized cities can have 0 tax just fine.

I do hear that similarity, but the middle portion you refer to also sounds a lot like parts of Holst's "Mars" (ca. 1920). However, speaking of connections I also know that much of this track (and some of the others from the game) is very similar to the soundtrack from Ben Hur (1959) by Miklos Rozsa: Compare the first half of this track with the various iterations of "Victory Parade"; from 5:00 onward around Rozsa's "Roman March". Personally I like this track better!
