"Without John Williams, bikes don't really fly. Nor do brooms in Quidditch matches. Nor do men in red capes. There is no Force. Dinosaurs do not walk the Earth. We do not wonder. We do not weep. We do not believe. John, you take our films, many of them about our most impossible dreams, and you make them real for billions of people." -Steven Spielberg on John Williams

God dammit, listening to this genuinely brings me to tears each time. It's so perfect. The emotion is so perfectly captured in the music. This is my favourite cue from any of the Star Wars movies, ever. Absolutely beautiful piece. It reprises several of the key motifs from the movie, draws them together (with some novel bridging material) and unifies all the emotional arcs - sadness, defeat, love, hope - into a determination to meet the future and its unknown challenges. Okay, here's why Williams' Star Wars soundtracks are so well done. The musical cues that begin this piece are the same as the fanfare from A New Hope in the medal scene, but muted and somber obviously. Good callback, use it for another movie's finale but the tone is wildly different. Second, the ESB soundtrack as a whole is the most perfect and cohesive example of the music acting as a character as well as echoing the storytelling. Sheer brilliance.

Just the first 30 seconds of this already take you to a galaxy far far away. It is mesmerizing how inspired and devoted John Williams was when writing the magical music for the six Lucas movies. Now in the Disney sequels I don't hear the magic, nor inspiration anywhere.

There are many great composers, and some who can weave in more subtext and complexity, but nothing can rival the sheer purity of Williams. He tackles the central themes with such elegance and straightforwardness, the rises and falls mirror the fluctuations of the human spirit and go directly into your soul. He can tell you the whole story with a few notes and motifs. Other composers create tracks to frame and provide backdrop to the movies. Williams’s tracks ARE the movies. It is in this regard that he is unparalleled and is not only an icon of music and cinema, but of humanity itself. I still recall the first time I heard the theme from Jurassic Park in its entirety. It was almost a religious moment. For a brief moment, it felt as if I glimpsed the meaning of the struggle of life. Which of course was an underlying theme of the movie. I don’t think I’ve ever felt that way again.

This music gives me very similar feelings to that from another great movie ending, The Fellowship of the Ring. That sense that the heroes have lost, for the time being, but the battle wages on and hope still lives. Time is rushing onwards and so, along with it, are the heroes, off to face their next adventure in the hopes that it will be a victory. Always gives me the goosebumps.
