One time when I was a kid, I woke up around a bit after 4AM for some reason. I turned on the TV and starting flipping through channels. I landed on a black and white that looked enticing to me. I stopped and watched. It was The Twilight Zone and it was this episode (only saw the last 5 minutes though). It was immediately followed by The Masks. I remember telling my dad it was like Goosebumps with Night of the Living Dummy and The Haunted Mask being my comparisons.

Jackie Cooper was one of the original Rascals from the Our Gang shorts before Spanky and Alfalfa. Not just a child actor. My interpretation of the ending is that Caesar was setting up Susan in the same way He set up Jonathan and that He isn't actually intending to help Her at all.
@Sojoboscribe2 ай бұрын
Possibly, but there is a big catch to that plan, unlike Johnathan, Susan is NOT a nice person. Plus, she KNOWS what happened to the last guy and that Caesar is a manipulative individual. Caesar may want to TRY to double cross Susan, but he's going to have a much harder time of it, especially without blowing the fact he's alive to the general public. Plus, he's finally found a kindred spirit, someone as nasty as he is. Why ruin that? He may be alive, but he's still a dummy, his needs are not that complex (as far as we know, he doesn't need to eat, or sleep, or anything like that.) Let him have a nicer place to stay, and nice clothes, and he basically has his needs and wants covered. He may like money, but there is only so much he personally can spend it on.

The sad reality is a lot of good intention people get screwed over by evil. Watchers of the Twilight Zone needed to understand that. Bad folks will sell you out and leave you to take the full blame. Also may influence the youth into doing bad things too. A harsh lesson but a semi-realistic one if one replaces Ceasar with a gang leader. I think the episode works for what the lesson is because it is a needed one. Mr. Rogers got mad at hearing news that a kid murdered his little sister because he was bored. That's Susan. Bratty for no reason other than pettiness and the need to make others suffer. They exist.

I admit this is not one of my favorite episodes. The biggest issue is there's no question of identity as in The Dummy. We know from the outset that Caesar is "alive" and quite malevolent. But Jonathan has got to be the weakest protagonist on the entire series. He is totally dominated by Caesar throughout, and it doesn't take much to get him to do Caesar's bidding. I suppose Jackie Cooper's decision to do the Irish accent helped somewhat to make Jonathan a likeable guy, but it just makes him seem even weaker than perhaps was intended. Jonathan just does not win much sympathy at all, and we're just begging for him to be put out of his misery. Which brings us to Suzanne Cupito/Morgan Brittany's Susan, and yeah, she is VERY unlikeable throughout. She hates Jonathan for really no reason whatsoever. When I first saw the episode, I pretty much predicted the whole thing: Caesar would abandon Jonathan at first opportunity and hook up with the girl. Although she'll have a hard time carrying that huge trunk, and I'm not sure how she'll handle the ventriloquism, but that probably won't be much of a problem since Caesar will likely abandon HER at first opportunity to seek out a more pliable - and adult - "partner." All and all, not a particularly satisfying episode. Now, I am vastly amused now to see Batman (Superfriends), Chief O'Hara (Batman 66), and Perry White (the classic Superman movies) in the same episode - when I was a kid I had no idea, of course. Olan Soule had a pretty interesting career, starting in radio as Mr First Nighter, the host of the dramatic anthology of the same name, for several years. He's probably best known as a voice actor today, although he's had several acting roles (including an appearance on Batman 66). I think he was one of Jack Webb's favored actors because he appeared all over Dragnet. It's weird thinking of his very authoritarian voices because that face and body do NOT suggest authoritarian! 🤣🤣
