@@FeverDreamlandTheater, one of my favorite parts of this masterpiece episode is that Jason Foster easily convinces the four family members about the masks being the OPPOSITE of their actual personalities! "Without your masks, you're ALL caricatures! If ANY of you remove your mask/masks BEFORE midnight, you'll each get train fare back to Boston! And that's IT!"

I have an idea about why the old man didn't have his face morphed from the mask; instead, death was the curse from the skull mask, after all he does die at midnight. Also, a human face is already technically shaped like a skull.

This is one of my mom's favorite "Twilight Zone" episodes. As someone else has already said in the comments, Ida Lupino really was ahead of her time. I have watched two of her directorial ventures, "Outrage" and "The Hitch-Hiker". What she did within the shoestring budgets she had work with was really wonderful!

I cannot wait to check out more of her work. The Hitch-Hiker I came across while doing research on the TZ Hitch-Hiker episode, it was interesting to see Ida had directed a film with that title. Another absolutely fantastic episode review my friend! I just love the deeper meanings of this episode. People may act so kind and supportive, but they always have an ulterior motive for their selfishness and greed. Very unsettling episode when I saw it in 1964 at 14 years old. This and " Eye of the Beholder, " had bizarre makeup that was chilling at the time. A good example of beauty goes skin deep but ugly goes right to the bone.

I think Lupino should have done more work in horror because this one really hits the mark. I guessed the ending, but it was still a shocker. This is one of those punishments worse than death. I don't think Foster was any nicer than the rest of his family by doing this. Maybe the real horror was when they found out he had actually given all his money to charity instead of them!

Always a treat to see that you have uploaded another TZ ep review. You do such a skillful and clever job at putting together your videos. As for this particular episode, I think most people like it better than I. It's not bad, but the buildup takes quite a long time before the payoff, I felt. Still, a good and creepy message. I actually really like how Serling didn't flinch from bringing out the unflattering truth about our dark interior. 3.5/5 for me.

Here's another fav episode, and one where our thoughts about its merits are much the same. You referenced "The Masks" taking place in New Orleans at Mardi Gras, but beyond that festivity, there's another darker tradition that's associated with that city, a tradition that could explain how the masks were to gain their peculiar "properties", and that, of course, is voodoo. Back in the day, voodoo was most associated with Afro-Americans, whose ancestors brought a strange amalgam of their pagan beliefs with Christianity on the slave ships from Africa's Ivory Coast. If the masks were the products of some voodoo spell casting, could it be that Jason Foster's black manservant Jeffrey either was Foster's go-between with a voodoo practitioner, who performed the occult rituals needed to invest them with their malevolent power? Or was Jeffrey the man with the mojo himself, carrying out an eldritch ceremony in a spell room hidden away somewhere in the mansion. My thought is that voodoo is the most likely explanation for how the masks were cursed. I've come to think of Foster as pretty nasty in his own right. Yes, you might say, the Harpers had what was coming to them, but in a far less horrific, but equally shaming of them, he could have called them all to his deathbed, only to have his attorney tell them they've all been written out of the will, and the fortune would, instead, be handed over to some other people or organization, maybe even to Jeffrey. Here, he's more their occult judge, jury, and executioner. Depriving them of their fortune would be one thing, but to turn the rest of their lives into a living hell is vastly worse. Jason Foster is not a nice man, but he picked the right family with whom to be nasty. Virginia Gregg, who played Mrs. Harper, voiced Norman Bate's "Norma" side in _Psycho_ and the first two sequels. Kudos for your _Dexter_ reference--a nice touch and really hilarious. 🤣 *5 out of 5 nasty voodoo pranks for "The Masks"*
@FeverDreamlandTheater
@FeverDreamlandTheater 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Galantski, I see what you are saying in regards to Jason Foster. He certainly is acting as "occult judge, jury, and executioner" as you noted. The episode mainly highlights how terrible the Fosters are and pushes their comeuppance. With that being the focus, Jason is let off the hook regarding his own misdeeds. Maybe they went in that direction because this is another short story with the twist being a big part. Perhaps it just comes down to streamlining and leaving the Fosters as the main villains. Thanks for the info on the voodoo connection. I didn't go into that aspect too much but I'd agree, it seems like voodoo is the likely explanation for the powers the masks held. 👍

I have two comments. 1. While they might be reprehensible people, dear old dad is somewhat to blame, because I can't believe that his daughter was completely immune to any direction or teaching. The son in law and the grandkids? Yeah, lost causes. 2. At the end, the siblings comfort each other, they are holding hands, and it seems that the brother is more concerned over his pretty sister's loss than his own. The sister knows the brother will be there for her and she reaches out to him first. Maybe the younger generation wasn't a lost cause after all. Just a thought from a old lady in the Twilight Zone.

Hi Marie, hope you've been well & glad to hear from you. I agree with your thoughts on this one. Like you said, there's no way the father is totally innocent. Hey Mark, glad someone brought that up. This episode really pounds on the Harpers for being greedy and awful. But the old man does not exactly come off as totally innocent either. No doubt, I imagine a longer version of this story could have fleshed out the family history and made things a little less black and white.
