Voices of the Past

4 жыл бұрын

This is an extract from Julius Caesar's 'Commentaries on the Gallic Wars', first published between 58 and 49 BC.
In 60 BC Rome was not yet an empire, but soon it would be. The momentous events of the next decades, many of which were put into motion by the famed politician Julius Caesar, were some of the most important and formative of the Western World. We tell this story directly from the words of Caesar himself. Starting with his masterpiece ‘Commentaries on the Gallic Wars’ - first published over two thousand years ago yet still widely read all over the world today.
How do we actually know about history? Voices of the Past is a channel dedicated to recreating the original accounts from the people who lived through events, or who lived far closer to them than we do today. We do this word for word, with an accompanying soundtrack of rousing music and images.

“One such druid going by the strange name of Panoramix, I believe, is said to have concocted a potion that imbues those who drink it with enormous strength for a time. Legions from the forts of Petibonum, Laudanum, Aquarium and Babaorum claim this to be true. I believe this to be a mere excuse by the forts’ officers, as they have yet to overcome the rebellious village where this Panoramix is said to reside. I am tempted to pay this druid a visit very soon...”

@@MrNecryptic Well - taking the Roman and Celtic customs: not convinced. And believe me, I'm also informed what they've invented in other parts of the world. We Europeans just want to give a nice clean picture of ourselves. Like do many other nations. Usually it's the small tribes who are the most humane. They have had no time to develope a separate warrior/soldier class, but hunters are their warriors and police as well. Except if their religion doesn't involve some torture, mutilation of bodies or cannibalism. We were all good in inventing ways to cause pain the other guy. The civilization is a thin layer in us. And when that's scrubbed a bit too hard - well, the beast in us counters violently, so easily. It's always 'the others' who are bad - 'we're doing it right'. The reason is usually because we are we, not because our values would be perfect: We are always good in justifying the wrong we do, and roll the responsibility to the others. Blaming game. 'They trampled a flower in our garden, so we shot their cat. Teaches them a lesson.' Like the Greek called the others barbars. Yet they used pitch based fire to burn ships, houses & people. The Greeks were civilized - because they said so :)

@@CelticAngloPress2nd not all, but yeah there was a lot of rhetoric at the Roman empire at this time about mimicing other artists, writers, etc. Roman sources should not be taken as 100% fact, but can be used a point of discussion and cultural memory in themselves. The date of separation between events and writers ought to be considered. We already know that the Frankish Celts we're naming cities after the story of Troy. The problem? Later in 700 ad Gregory of tours will make the claim that franks saw themselves as partly descendant from Trojans that came up through the Rhine. Well and good, many scholars dismiss it, but then again Etruscans in Western itality near the mouth of the Rhine also claim a Trojan ancestry with actual dna linked to Western turkey. Then add the Etruscan characters that start looking a lot like runes found in North Europe. We may never have a 100% clear history until we cross the claims and evidence between different scholarly expertise.

Good point sick revolt ... A Brahma is as mentioned is apart of Hinduism that has I believe 4 or 5 layers to the system .. much like Plato’s republic wanted salve , craftsmen , soldier , and politicians basically as Greeks cast systems set up in non religious based control system though .. Brahma would be the top which would be not only if the wise spiritual leaders but also the rich whom was largely highly educated compared to rest in cast.. They still been running on the cast system even up to today for most part ..it has its bad and good parts as all systems of forced control and inequality being law enforced The top as spiritual leaders and education valued as needed to be at top is great imo for leading the country more so then wealth alone selecting who will be on top as in western beliefs system .. On down side is the bottom is called untouchables which is a position given in birth that can’t move out of ..your position as such Is designated for worst lifestyles and responsibilities forced on to them .. street cleaners which third world cities where piss and shit in streets isn’t lovely .. they are also ones forced to burn bodies and so on as how given name untouchables because those via their religious construction via text Is told must fast and wash as have no one touch you when handling dead bodies or sewer gunk .. They go further when looking at now outside religious beliefs and investigation held on the human beings them self all around in such a large vast area and culture along with far reaching society with many cities and small farming villages .. those villagers at times were found to not be allowed to even use streets so no one had to see them or walk by them .. to not be allowed to even leave house with devices meant to catch spit and prevents them able to see and do anything when out doors then as wearing such bags and devices over head .. which if don’t follow rules they are abused further as adorned as religious rebellious scoundrels committing worth sins ever There is many documentaries on it .. a interesting piece of history never done in a way this KZbin channel does here perfectly amazingly now I think about it .. maybe we can get him to do one on the applying and development of India’s cast system and any revolts or war effects on it

They're somewhat related - Hindi speakers, and many related languages brought the Hinduism to existance, and were clearly influenced by the Dravidian thinking. So the Hindus also have a polytheistic pantheon, being that their view of what happens after death is different. Also, the Druidic, Celtic religion wasn't that far from the Viking or Greek religions, or Slavic - all related to the Hindi speakers in India, and their religion. Slavic even showing clear connections to the Indo-European languages of India. And we shouldn't forget the Romans had a very similar religion than the Greeks - they interpreted the Greek gods the same as theirs, just changed the names fitting to their own nomenclature. I get very similar vibes reading the Greek divinity stories and Edda of the Scandinavians. Differences are there, of course - but they both have this interesting pantheon that's fighting against giants - called Titans or Jotuns. When they are not squabbling like in a soap opera, or taking human form, and drop on the Eartn to have children with the mortals, and other meddling - like mixing people in their own fights, making them tools. And they have a home somewhere high on the mountains. Though I remember that Vikings explained there's a rainbow road that a visitor must take from certain mountains to the divine world. A least a bit more otherworldly place than at the Greeks: their gods had a mountain where they were thought to live. How about the Hindu pantheon: guess they have a place somewhere yonder? Don't know where that giant theme rose: maybe it was the way the cultures demonized the gods of the people whose lands they conquered. Justified their conquest, and ethnic cleansing. And India doesn't sound exceptional in this. So what else is new. Do Hindu gods fight wars against giants? Don't know if the Celts had that. They had stories of Dwarves at least, as did the Vikings too. At least I've read of a Welsh hero who went to kill a mountain giant. These type of stories the Vikings told about killing trolls. Who were giantlike creatures, like monsters, who also could do magic.

Did you have my comment removed? It was as religious as speaking about Brahmans and Druids - involving mainly thinking of how the ideologies are somewhat related through the Indo-European background. Being that the Dravidic and Indo-European background have both affected the Hindu religion. Is there something disrespecting there?

With Caesar's description of the Wicker man, it could either be him genuinely smearing his enemies in Gaul, or (the all more likely to me) trying understand the Gaulic society so he and future Roman rulers could govern more easily and his imagination running away with him. Given the Roman's track record with cultural as well as military conquest, it seems in character for Caesar to first understand the Gaul's, making assimilation all the more easy.

Halloween originates from the Druid festival Samhain in honour of the dead. Bopping for Apples was a game they played to choose their sacrifices. Apples were placed in a cauldron of boiling water and captives hand a chance to retrieve an apple to spare their life, while their hands were tied as they knelt around the cauldron. Druids maintained a fearsome reputation in order to remain powerful

It's interesting the certain language Caesar uses. For example Military service and taxes. It makes me wonder just how advanced Gaul society was and how much Caesar was using those terms to help his reads understand. For example by saying 'Exempt from military service' he could simply have ment they do not go to war however the term used suggest the Gauls have a full complicated Military system.

Medieval Fuedal society was based mostly on Germanic Culture (even in Wales, Ireland, and Scotland, where Vikings and Normans invaded and were assimilated by the local populace), so it could be that the Germanics were similar in social structure to the Celts. That wouldn't be too surprising, as both groups were descended from Proto-Indo-Europeans and often bordered each other.

The religious practices of Druids Further evidence has been found of 'triple deaths' where a victim was simultaneously stoned, drowned, and impaled on a spear. There is no evidence of this. The Romans needed to discredit the Druids to destroy the will of the Celts to resist Roman occupation. That's why the had them all killed in the end. Ceasar fought the Veneti in Brittany, not far from the land of the Carnutes. This means that the druids can be pre-Celtic.That can also explain why Britain is seen as senior. Caesar's knowledge of Druidry came from a single source as far as we know: Divitiacus of the Aedui. Most of Caesar's account was aimed at justifying his subjugation of Gaul. Romans were keen to accuse their opponents of human sacrifice - his successor Augustus was accused of sacrificing 300 senators at Perusia. However, if you discount the negative slant, this is the first useful historical account of the Druids.
@DieLuftwaffel

There is a great deal of archaeological evidence of pre-Roman human sacrifice among the Celts, both large and small scale. Besides the many sacrificed "bog bodies", one that comes to mind is the massive pit found years ago full of hundreds of amputated human arms piled very specifically in a large pattern.
@timflatus
@timflatus 2 жыл бұрын
@@DieLuftwaffel how does one use that evidence to prove human sacrifice? Bog bodies are not specifically "Celtic" - I believe Lindow Man is the only British Iron-Age find (correct me if I'm wrong). The idea they were sacrificed is speculation. Your "massive pit found years ago" could equally have been the remains of battle.

@@Wallyworld30 - Corn is a generic term for grain in Europe. It's only in America that we use the word corn to mean maize, and other grains are just lumped together as grain, or referred to as a specific type of grain: rye, wheat, barley, flax (also used to make linen), etc. Remember, maize/corn was unknown in Europe and Britain during the life of Caesar. Not until European explorers discovered the Americas did they encounter maize/corn and potatoes. Sometimes the century in which a translator lived needs to be taken into consideration, although not all people today realize corn was once a generic term for grain of any kind. If one is talking about food crops, wheat may well have been what was raised in order to make flour for bread.

To all neo pagans: ohhh! So it was not the christians who burned the druids! It was other kind of pagans. Ones belonging to the national state!

Its strange that Caesar describes them as so alien, when the Senate itself likely developed from a priest class (possibly of something similar to druids).

The druids were a priestly caste very similar to Vedic brahmins.

MR Mister I agree, Mr M. Dr Pidgeon was just in Wales a few months ago. While there he went to the tomb of Joseph of Arimithea (Yahshua’s grandfather’s grave), and the grave of (I think) Barnabas (Bar Nevi). I was looking at Irish whiskey barrels one day and I noticed something. If you take the word Yiddish, for the language the Jews speak, you find something rather odd if you make a few changes. Drop the Y to get Iddish. Make the d’s an R and don’t roll the R on your tongue as an Irishman would, and you get Irish. Roll the R and you get iddish, add the y back and you’re back at Yiddish. I’m not equating Irish to Yiddish, but I am drawing a similarity between the two names. The name Dan, being one of the 12 brothers of the 12 tribes of Israel, would have pronounced their name Dahn. The Gaul’s came from Dahn’s brother Gad (pronounces Gaud, like gaudy). The port Donegal was named for those two bloodlines; Dahn and Gaul. The rampant lions of England and Scotland (and Spain) are the Heralds of the royal line of Judah. One is Gold, for the Kingly line (Jesus’ line) while the other is for the bloodline of the first born. When Zerah was stuck his hand out of his mom, he was declared the first-born. A scarlet thread was tied around his wrist so he would be known by the midwives. The first child to be born was the child without the scarlet thread around his wrist. That’s why the Scot’s fly the banner of the red rampant lion. The brits, being of Pherez claim the royal lineage and therefore fly the banner of the golden rampant lion. Lastly, that I’ll share here, is this; if you look up the word dulcimer in the strong’s concordance, you’ll see that Bagpipes could have been a translation to use in dulcimer’s stead. Oh, Joseph’s coat of many colors was a tartan. So yeah, there’s a lot that points to the Druid’s and the Scot’s and the Yiddish (oops, I mean Irish) being Hebrew.
